All 03 - 06 SRT-10 Owners, just curious how many of you have noticed paint chips on your front end (hood, bumper cover), behind front tires (painted area in wheel well), side sills, behind rear tires (painted area in wheel wells) and the area behind the rear tires.

If so, what is the extent of the amount of chips you have noticed? How many miles are on your car? What if anything have your done to deal with the chips (repair - what method or ignore)?

As we all know that if a car is driven, it will eventually have some paint / stone chip damage. Just looking to hear some other's experiences with it.

Thanks

If you drive, this will happen. I fill them with touch up paint, mask and color sand with 800 paper, coat with clear coat and then buff with a very light cutting agent. :dunno:

What about applying a clearbra to these areas? Worked like a charm on my 2006 Viper.

Yes, I intend to do just that.

But what about higher on the hood or leading edge of the roof? Also the painted area that is "INSIDE - WTH???) the wheel wheels (what were they thinking when they did that????) Not sure if the clear bra can go there - especially on the back ones.

Most of all just curious how many out there have been seeing chips on there cars and to what extent.

I have 27,300 miles on my '04 bought new in '05.

I don't think any paint can take 100 mph and up hits either off the tires from the road or from anything drifting through the air.

I plan to touch them up at some point, but since the car has plastic and aluminum body panels it is not like they get worse over time.....

Yes...Clear bra, or I have 3M, can be cut to cover the painted lip just inside the wheel wells, both front and back. It has worked great for me..I have the entire side sill and the entire area behind the rear tires covered. I have seen chips on other coupes just above the windshields. A strip of 3M can also be cut and applied there for protection.

The best thing I have found to protect the rocker panels are the side splitters from autoform. My rockers were chipped and nicked with road trash. I installed the side splitters and repainted the rockers now its not an issue.

On my RT, I have 45K miles and it has been repainted before. I think there are about 20K miles since the last paint job and it the rock chips are bad. I figure I will not repaint it until I can afford to paint the whole car and clear bra most of it. Guess that will be a while. ;)

This may sound silly, but the best remedy for me was to leave more room b/w me and the car in front. I go riding with my buds a lot in the mountains. The first time I went I followed too closely and got several paint chip. The next five or six times, I either lead or gave more space. No more chips. Wheel well chips are inevitable unless you use a protective clear bra.

So are most of you SRT-10 owners seeing alot of rock / stone chips on your car? One area that seems as if it will take a beating is behind the front and rear wheels and along the side sill. I know the behind the wheels area was a problem on my Z06 as well.

i CERTAINLY have seen far more rock/stone chips in my 06 coupe paint then I ever did in my 02 ACR. I honestly think the paint quality is lower in the 06s. I have only 15k miles on the front of my car and it looks far more CHIPPED then my 60k Mile ACR right before I sold it. I'm sorry but Dodge/who-ever painted their Parts did a ****TY job on these. I wonder if the 08's will suffer from the same problems.

Gen 2 paint jobs were more resiliant then gen 3s as far as I can tell. And we own two gen 3s, and my gen 2 held on to its paint far better then the gen 3s.

Maybe thats why that plant died and company went bust who painted all of these parts (the one where Jon B bought all their stuff).. who knows... but the quality of the paint on the gen 3's was not what it should have been.

There has even been posts about the painted stripes being far worse at smoothness/integration into the car then gen 2. No there is certainly an issue with gen 3's paint (at least 05-06) and its kind of sad.

I have 13000 miles on my Blue/Silver 2006 Coupe. The chipping is bad underneath the sills and especially under the rear fender. I had these areas 3M and it helped.

My problem is the Hoosier A6 tires on the rear. A very soft compound on the A6 and they really sand blast under the rear fender.

Very little, if any, chips on the front hood and bumper area. But under the front bumper I have, sorry to say, some curb scratches.

I waited too long to put on the 3M-should have had it done as soon as possible after I took delivery of my Viper.

I put the 3M clear on the front end worked good still get chips when guard runs out like the hood area. But DON'T put the 3M on the side panels, I found that it will absorb the debris. It will stain and you can't get it out. If you hit a cone at autocross good luck trying to get that mark out. I just put Rock Gaurd on my front end and probably won't know results until after driving season.

I put 3m as soon as my VCA coupe was delivered. The whole side sill nose top of hood and in all the wheel wells works like a champ!! Of course i agree that the Gen 2 paint was is better paint is softer on the Gen3s. Get your car 3med ASAP saves your paint!!
