Hello, I am new to this forum and have just purchased my first Viper. It's a 1993 black, rear antenna, A/C, battery in middle of the trunk, cross-over car. My question to you all is, how many '93 cross-over cars where produced in black?
Thanks
Shawn

I've never heard that term before, granted I'm not a familiar with the really early cars. Just out of curiosity, where did you hear it? Was it something the previous owner told you or something you found out through searching yourself?

I’m not certain, however, I think it’s in reference to the exhaust system. I did a little looking on the data I have and it’s not mentioned but hey, I don’t have all the data... yet ;)

I believe the reference is to the '93 cars made in the same configuration as the original '92s. Basically the '93 antennae cars.

Is that why the battery isn't in the normal location? Does the antenna take up the space normally used in the rear fender for the battery?

Production after the "cross-over" cars saw the antennae move to the windshield and the battery by the left rear wheel.

Thank You Sir, it's nice to be able to understand it better and know it's not an exhaust thing. Just wish my data was a bit clearer on the whole topic

Yup, cross over means early 1993 models. Basically 92 models built in 93.
Having said that... I am not aware of any cross over models being built in any other color than Viper Red.

Looks like I need to work on getting the MDH for 93 now that I know how to identify the crossovers

Cross over production went thru June of '93, so I'm sure there were some black cars.

@GRANGER73 With that known, I have 40 Black Vipers that have a build date in that range with the data I have today. I do not have all the build dates, so that 40 number is probably not the total

My name is Patrick. I am the originator of the "1992 and 1993 features by year" information stated in your VCA - IVR on this web suite.
The 1993 Vipers were not 92's built as 93's. They have their own model year changes for all 93's plus several other changes that occurred on Vipers built after ~4/04 -20/93. On the 93's built prior to April, the antenna and battery locations were the same as the 92's and therefore were called "carry over cars". Here are some of the many features and changes on the 1993 Viper;

  1. Black exterior color introduced
  2. Engine production moved to Mound Road Engine Plant
  3. Engine color is a darker shade of red with a flat rough finish (Starting ~VIN 105).
  4. Motor oil filler cap changed to a threaded cap # 4573497 with "oil filler can" imprint and the valve cover is changed to accept this threaded cap.
  5. Air conditioning added as a dealer installed option
  6. Rocker exhaust covers have clear anti-chip tape on the front and sides in 3 places on both sides.
  7. Plastic stanchion cover on both doors has 4 screws fastening the stanchion cover in place (no clips as on the '92)
  8. Soft top latch holes on windshield frame have molded plastic cap with hole for latch.
  9. Removable rear window has snaps mounted in 3 flexible black leather tabs which snap to fixed snap buttons mounted on the ledge behind the rear seats.
  10. At approx. build date 04/04/93 following changes occurred:
    1. Rear antenna replaced by windshield antenna wire
    2. Battery relocated to left rear fender (side away from fuel filler to make room for BUX rear exit exhaust)
    3. Front caliper lettering changed from "VIPER" to "RT/10"
    4. Reverse lockout added to transmission
    5. Top Material Changed from Vinyl to Cloth
Other Running Changes:
  • Fuel filler door access notch moved to fuel filler door instead of being in the body
  • Rear valance has solid black area below bumper with 6 large vent holes ~ 5 3/8" long x 7/8" high. Four are in the center
I hope that this information is helpful.
Best wishes always, Pat

I'm fairly sure my mom's 94 has that same coolant gauge, unless you're saying it changed to that during 93.
