    1996 - 2002 Dodge Viper Buyer's Guide Video.

I didn't see anything about the side sill metal screws falling out and getting stuck in the rear tires, at least in my 97 GTS. I did a write up back then to replace the screws with machine screws and and to place insert nuts into the frame. That was a big problem back then and still is if the...

Need a service manual for my GTS '97.

I have the original owner's manual that was in my 97 GTS when new. It is even wrapped in the original plastic. When I bought the car, neither I nor the dealer could find the owner's manual, so they ordered a new one for me. I later found it in the secret pocket behind the seat which I didn't...

Question on how to flush coolant on a 96 GTS

I have a one page write-up that I did back in 2001. Send me an email for a copy, to: [email protected]. Jerry

I have had enough with these battery/charging system issues

If you are leaving the hood open or have the alarm system turned on, the battery will have a higher amperage drain. So, keep the hood closed and the alarm system off while it is in your garage. Jerry

Adjusting the door on a GTS - Photos and what I did

I recently had a Viper tech adjust my sagging door, by simply lifting it with a little force, (without loosening any bolts,) to raise the back part of the door. He said that the reason it drops is because heavy people getting out of the car tend to push down on the top of the door to help...

Need Viper mechanic in Milwaukee to install power steering pulley

I need a good mechanic or Viper tech in the Milwaukee area to install for a friend, the after-market IPSCO machined power steering pulley and bracket on a 97 GTS. Does anyone have a suggestion for such a person? Will need name and phone. Thanks Jerry

    Battery died, Now wont idle

Your Viper may have a aftermarket reduction pulley, which slows down the belt speed for track reasons. With the slower belt, your alternator is not running fast enough at idle to deliver the voltage needed for the ignition, and the engine stalls. Also your battery does not have enough voltage...

    Oil Leak Gremlin!

Your oil could be coming from the two vent hoses that come off the front of the valve covers, that dump into the airbox. This will happen with heavy breaking going into turns and send oil into the arifilter. The fix is to add a puke tank that collects the oil instead of letting it go to the...

    Paxton overdrive crank pulley?

I have one I will sell for $100 and has two belts. Send me a message. Jerry PS This is not a Paxton part but an underdrive pulley that came from Roe.

Help! Idle drops low when stopped, occasionally dies.

If your car has a reduction pulley on the crank damper, you will get this problem when the battery is low in charge. The reduction pulley slows down the serpentine belt to take some load off the engine when reved to red line. The downside is that at long idle times, the battery is not charging...

    Door speaker removal?

I just did this a few days ago to fix the window guide. Take out the three screws, then use a paint scraper or flat blade screw driver to gently pry under the edge of the speaker. Be careful not to scratch the paint on the speaker grill. Pry in several places around the circumference and it...

    Plastic film on Chassis?

I removed the plastic and made stainless sheet covers that are attached with clear RTV. They look a lot better and will still collapse when it needs to. Jerry

Correct Optima Battery for Gen 2

I have an Optima 75-35-720 battery in my 97 GTS that was given to me by an Optima engineer, (Randy Hively) here at the manufacturing plant in Denver, back in 1998. It is still working just fine and I charge it with a Deltran Battery Tender Plus once every three months. This has been enough...

    MGW shifter

It's a lot easier to change the shifter from under the car. I have a write-up, if interested. I have done it many times and requires no drilling of rivets. Send emails to: [email protected].

    VIN number

Dom426 I am going to be downsizing to a smaller house and will not likely have the garage space for the Viper. You are right, I have been on this site since 1997, when I bought the car. Jerry

    VIN number

I am selling my 97 GTS on Craig's List and was concerned about giving out the VIN number to someone who has e-mailed me. Is there any risk in giving out the number? Have there been cases where someone has rebuilt a wreck using a stolen VIN? Jerry in Denver

    hood wont stay up

That was a common problem on the earlier cars and was due to a heat treat problem with the coil springs. Once the warranty replaced them, that never occurred again on my 97. Jerry

    Shifter popping out of gear??

If you are using an aftermarket short throw shifter, it is very likely that the stops built into the shifter are not set correctly. I have seen this many times and would recommend going back to the stock shifter. There are adjustments for all of the gates and can inhibit the gears from fully...

    Brand new battery dead...AGAIN!

Make sure that the hood release is not open. This will cause a drain on the battery, at least in my 97. Without a charger on the battery, with the hood open, the battery will discharge in a few days. Jerry

2000 GTS with RSI 510 motor. Bucking??

This can usually be cured by lagging the opening of the throttle bodies. There should be a write-up somewhere on this, but it is usually due to the throttle bodies opening at the same time.

To weld or not to weld...

That joint would not have leaked water if it had been fitted with the larger diameter downstream. It's designed backwards for proper leak control.
