Does anyone have a part number for a 170* thermostat? I am going to do some maintenance this week and lower tstat might be good for the Texas heat. If a 180* is better for some reason then that part number would be good too. FWIW I try not to drive my car in the cold so don't really care about heater performance.

Thanks!

There's also the issue of PCM performance not seeing the engine warm up.

I do not think the 170 will do anything for you that the 180 does not already do. Where does your temp run now in traffic and on the hiway?

170 helped me a BUNCH on hotter days with stop traffic...i know, it might not make much sense, but after the thermostat I saw a huge difference.

I installed the 170 t-stat from Roe Racing a couple of years ago. As Tom once wrote, it helps in the sense that it's like opening the window a little earlier in the morning on a very hot day. Eventually, the engine is going to heat up past 170 and still operate in the normal range unless you have a super-cooling radiator, fan and/or duct kit. It helps but doesn't work miracles. I believe the Wizard also recommends the 180 t-stat. I found that my vented cowl made a bigger difference in temps especially when sitting still in traffic but again it's not a drastic difference.

The car runs in the 190-210 range by the guage, but I bet the one in it's 13 years old so I was going to swap it while I was in there doing the tune up.

It is quite common for those changing a T-Stat to thoroughly BURP the trapped air out of Gen1-2 motors in the process. The Burping / Coolant flush-fill may well have had MORE to do with your running cooler than the 170T vs 180T ............

Ha! What a PIA doing a t-stat change in a gen 1 is! I'd leave it alone unless there's a real problem. If it works don't fix it.

Solved my cooling problem. 180 deg t-stat, vented cowl from Jon B, Reprogramed PCM from DC to turn on the fans earlier besides make more power and run better. You have to get the fans to come on sooner too to keep it cool in traffic.Runs at or below 1st mark on the highway and does not go over 3rd mark in stop and go traffic. GTS Bruce
