1st Viper, How\'s 12.05 @ 119.69mph??

Hey guys,
I'm new to the Viper racing scene but getting a good education on this forum and the track. I went out to Bradenton for my first time out and my best was a 12.23 @ 119.1 with a 2.02 60'. Then last week I made it out to Orlando and ran a 12.05 @ 119.69mph with a 1.868 60'. The weather was MUCH better in Orlando and the track prep was good because "The Night of Fire" was the following day. I just got the car about a month ago and I'm still learning to launch and shift. I've been racing for over 20 years but this monster is a new beast to master. :D

The car is totally stock except for smooth tubes and filters. I don't think it was ever drag raced before I got it. No traces of rubber under the rear and it still has the original 7YO Pilots on it. That is making it a challenge also. It has 3.73 gears and thats it. Still has the original exhaust and cats. What kind of times can I expect to get with this set up? What would you recommend as a first mod?

God Bless,
Keith

Great times! Especially for being new to the car, and it being nearly stock.

For next mods I'd get high flow cats, a VEC-1, and maybe headers.

Great times! Half shafts, nitrous, slicks and skinnies.

Half Shafts - Are the 1,000hp rated ones "too much" for like a 500-700ho engine? Or are they ok sicne no matter what you throw at them, they can handle?

The stronger the better, but the stronger the more $. Strong enough is the way to go.

Thanks guys,
I guess tires, headers, and exhaust is first. Those who have the 96 with the 17" rims, what tire do you recomend? I hear the Kuhmo's are good street and track tires. Also, what headers and exhaust performs the best. I drive the car a good bit and can't take a loud drone inside the car. Suggestions?

God Bless,
Keith

Nice times, but with 1.8 60 ft and 119 trapspeed u should be in the 11's easy. How fast are u shifting?

Keith, Kumhos are what you need for street, especially if you are planning on Mods. If you put them on front though, you are going to sandblast the sills! :(
With Kumhos, good weather, a prepped track, you are in the 11's easy!! :headbang:

If you will run 96 rims, you may want to re-consider Kumhos. Do a search on the 96 welded rim failures. I'd get new rims if I were you, running Kumhos all around.

This applies only to autocross where the wheel will get pushed and pulled at extreme pressure. For drag racing(straight line), there should be no problem.

A little extra info couldn't hurt. Every 96 owner should know this regardless.

Peace Out.

Hey "96 R/T 10,
Have you been to the track yet?
You have the mods I plan on doing and I was curious how they helped the 1/4 mile times. I already have the 3.73's and I may go with the Bellenger headers and Corsa 3" exhaust with no cats if it isn't too loud inside. Anyone have experience with that set up?

Thanks,
Keith

Hey Keith,
Yep, my best is a 12.2 at 115, but I know I can get it into the 11's. Keep in mind, my car is a Gen I. It is down in HP from yours by 35HP. I love the sound of it(no cats), and is not too loud. Quiet enough for me on the street and ROARS when I get on it! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Re: 1st Viper, How\'s 12.05 @ 119.69mph??

Hey guys,
Got an update. Ran 11.85 @ 118.49 in Bradenton during the V10 Nationals and that was with a lousy 1.83 60' time. I have been out of pocket due to work but I wanted to update you. Remember, this car only has the smooth tubes, filters, and 3.73 gears. I think with more practice I can cut a better 60' time and get into the mid 11's on the Kumho's. Do you guys think thats possible with the car set up the way it is?

God Bless,
Keith

Re: 1st Viper, How\'s 12.05 @ 119.69mph??

Hey Keith,
I must have missed ya at Bradenton. I also got into the 11's with my 96 RT/10. My best was 11.84 @ 11.39, my 60' on that run was 1.76(I was runnign kumho's). I think I was close to maxing out the car as it sits(may have squezzed out another .1 or so on a perfect run), and if I had any more power adders, I should go with the 3.55 or higher. You must have been like me going through the light near the redline in 4th.

Keith and Mike,
Those are GREAT times, especially considering the mods! Mike, that has to be near a Gen I record for header only car.
Congratulations!

Re: 1st Viper, How\'s 12.05 @ 119.69mph??

Thanks Mike and Mark,
In case I haven't said it lately, I am having a blast with this car. These bike guys are a blast to race. Shocks the crapp out of them when I either win or stay close.
I was right at the red line at the traps. Can't get any better than that as long as I don't get any power adders. Perfect gearing for a stock car. I will go with slicks and skinnies soon and have to opt for a 27" tall tire to offset any power adders in the future. Good luck and I'll keep you posted as I get headers, exhaust, etc...

Re: 1st Viper, How\'s 12.05 @ 119.69mph??

Hey Mike,
By the way those are great times!!
I was the moroon that broke out the first round because I ran an 11.98 @ 97mph and was in the stock 12.0 and up class. Thats right, 11.98 @ 97mph. I broke real hard because I was way ahead of the other guy at the traps. My two time trials were 12.08 and 12.02. I didn't think the car would run in the 11's as well as it has been. For a Gen I car you are doing VERY well. :2tu: A 1.7 60' time!! :D WOW!! Thats a great 60' with that car!! You have obviously been practicing. I can't seem to get any better than a 1.8 something. :-( Any launch suggestions? hehehehhehehe

God Bless,
Keith

Tires make the difference! I drove 7 hours down to Bradenton on my Kumho's V700, raced all weekend, then drove back. Awesome tire with some real grip. Also grips small rocks, big rocks basically everything you run over

96 r/t 10, that is a great MPH for your mods! You are driving the heck out of it.

I have a question about the Kumho's. Do they "sandblast" the rear bumper right behind the tire? I would assume they do as it is a very large painted area.

Re: 1st Viper, How\'s 12.05 @ 119.69mph??

It chips up the side sill more than anything else. The area behind the tire is plastic and must absorb alot because I don't have any chips there as for as I can see. It wouldn't hurt to put some 3M there though. I drive mine to Bradenton (7hrs each way), no problems, and yes I was do my best to get my best time. Which I did :D !!!!!
