Archer Qualifies 3R Viper on Pole at Portland

Portland, Oregon --  Tommy Archer, driver of the number 22/c3controls/Whelen
Engineering/3R Viper, drove to his first pole of the season and the first
professional racing pole position for the Dodge Viper Competition Coupe today at
Portland Raceway.

Teammates Phil McClure and Tim Wiens qualified in fifth and tenth place
starting all three 3R cars in the top ten for tomorrow's running of round five of
the SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge GT series at the Oregon track.

It took only one flying lap for the Duluth, Minnesota based driver to post a
time of 1:17.978 and a speed of 90 mph to put his 3R-Viper on the pole.  "It
was fun!  3R has worked incredibly hard chasing the rules, the weight and the
set-up of the Viper," said Archer.  "Will Moody and I have put together a good
car for the Portland track.  I have always done well here, I had my first pole
here in 1984 and won the last time I drove here in a Viper Trans-Am car.  I
have a lot of tire left for the race, so all I have to do is keep 21 cars
behind me for 50-minutes tomorrow."

Teammate Phil McClure, driving the number 73/Aggregate Industries/3R
Corvette, put in a time of 1:18.31 good enough for a third row starting position.
"The time was a little better than I expected.  I thought we would do an 18.5, so
that is good.  The car is handling well and we will have a good car for the
long run in the race.  We are expecting cooler weather tomorrow, but either way
we will be competitive."

Tim Wiens, driver of the number 33/1st Interstate Ins/3R Viper, qualified
with a time of 1:19.071 for a tenth place starting position.  "I hit some traffic
on my laps and then had a couple of spinners in front of me.  The motor is
pulling really good, but the 100-degree temperature is causing us to run a
little hot.  The handling of the car is predictable and I will just have to manage
my tires tomorrow for a good run in the race."

The race will be run on Sunday, July 25th and televised on Speed Channel at
1:00 p.m. on August 1st.
