All Competition Coupes come from the factory with two Motec Engine Logs configured. These are to assist you with scheduled maintenance by tracking the time on the engine and the time on the chassis. These logs are configured through Motec Dash Manager (Functions->Engine Log Setup…) and will appear as follows:

Engine Log #1
log1.gif

Engine Log #2
log2.gif

Engine Log #1 will accumulate time whenever the engine is running (RPM>500). Engine Log #2 will accumulate time whenever the engine is running and the vehicle is moving faster than 20 mph. This is an indicator of time on the chassis.

Both of these logs are stored during each download and can be viewed using Motec Interpreter (View->Statistics). The logs are not cleared during download and subsequent time stored will always be added to the current log values.

Many people have noticed that the logs do not accurately track the time on the engine or the time on the chassis. Furthermore, the engine time log (#1) is usually less than the chassis time log (#2). Of course, this is impossible. It turns out that the method of turning off your Comp Coupe has an effect on the engine log value. The Motec engine logs are stored temporarily in RAM memory and then periodically transferred to EEPORM. When the logging criteria is no longer met (RPM <500) any engine log data in RAM is transferred to EEPORM. The problem is that RAM memory will be lost whenever power to the dash is lost. EEPORM will not. Therefore, if power to the dash is lost before the logging is finished being stored, some of the memory (in RAM) is lost.

In other words, if you turn the engine off using the battery switch or turn the Motec Dash off before it is finished recording the engine logs, engine and chassis log data will be lost. To prevent this, you should always:

a) Turn off your Comp Coupe using the Ignition switch only.
b) Keep the Battery and the Display switches in the on position for at least 5-10 seconds after the Ignition switch is turned off.
c) It is now safe to turn off your Battery and Display switches. The engine logs will be stored safely.
d) To reduce this wait time, you can change your engine log criteria to indicate a time less than 5 seconds. Also, if you need help breaking the habit of hitting the Battery switch, you can purchase a protective switch cover or add a piece of tape as a reminder.

Since your previous engine logs may be inaccurate, you can estimate the true time on your Comp Coupe by checking the logged data that you have downloaded after each track session. Open each data file, select View->Graph. Press F2 to view the entire recorded data. Now click and hold on the graph; drag the cross hair to the far right of the graph and record the “Time” shown in the upper right corner. Sum all of your data files to calculate your true time.

Only the engine logs are affected by this data storage method; normal channel data is not lost if power is lost.
