drove about 6 miles only crusing and the temp guage went to the max and the warning light on the dash came on, dropped into 6th and crawled along and the guage fell back to the middle in about 4 seconds. Getting back on the power briefly in 4th the temp guage starts moving upwards again

the thermosat does kick in and turn the fan on, so is this likely to be the water pump then ?

Definitely the prime year for that issue!

Explaining Viper things to you
If the gauge works you have fluid. That's what the sensor reads. If it responds to load - slowing down and speeding up - then the fluid is circulating, at least by convection if not mechanical force from the pump.

There is likely a way to check fluid movement by disconnecting a hose and starting the engine. Sounds messy though. Maybe someone has some tips for that?

You may be right with the change happening in 01!

So, when one of the plastic impeller water pumps goes out on an '00-'02 car, is the replacement part a better part from an earlier year or do you get another water pump with the same failure mechanism?
