Western Zone Rendezvous - Southern Regions

Saturday May 7 - Auto Club Speedway, Fontana, California

WZR_2011_JPEG1.jpeg

Get ready for a fun packed, challenging event and join in to experience:

1. An autocross. The winner will win a trip to Detroit to compete in an autocross against the SRT engineers! To be eligible for this contest, tires must not have a manufacturer’s treadwear rating less than 80. For example, Pilot Sport Cups = 80 twr, Toyo R888’s = 100 twr, PS2s = 220 twr.

2. We’ll have a drag racers “tree” so you can learn how a tree works, learn to launch your Viper and test your reaction. Pro Drag Racer Lyle Larson of DC Performance will be teaching you. You will launch into a short straight with a left then right turn. This course is designed to induce unbalance in the car to give you a chance to “feel” what it is like when the car is on the edge.

3. Finally, there will be a figure 8 with in-car driving instruction. Pro Road Racing Coach and Viper Days Chief Driving Instructor Bob Blizzard and his team will be coaching you. This course is designed to let you feel the car “on the edge” and learn to make corrections.

We held this event at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Ca. which has huge parking lots. We were able to set up 3 "stations" which gave all attendees lots of drive time.

The first station was designed to put the driver in different situations that they might encounter on the street and induce under steer/ over steer conditions as well as the infamous "snake bite".
It was an invaluable lesson for every driver. Bob Blizzard did an incredible job teaching our members how to control and avoid such situations.

We had a launch station fully equipped with a light tree and even a pretty hankerchief girl :)

Lyle Larson from DC Performance was there running this station giving tips to our drivers on how to properly get off the line. Once the cars hit 2nd gear they were immediately thrown into and agility exercise where they had to slalom through the cones to a stop box. This was a side by side event which gave the drivers the chance to challenge eachother for bragging rights.

We also set up an Auto-X course which served as our qualifier to find the fastest driver which we will send to Detroit to compete in the SRT Challenge.

The auto-x course was designed to encompass the driving techniques learned from the other 2 stations and if properly applied on the Auto-x, would yield fast times.

Everyone learned a lot about car control, had a blast doing it and got a ton of driving time on course.

It was our pleasure of course and one of the reasons VPA was created in the first place: To help the members, regions, zones, and national clubs have bigger and better events. We are delighted to see yours was such a great success!
