Hey Howard,

Neat car and definitely a historical one too....did you get a great deal on the Edsel when you bought it?

Regards,
Aaron

Aaron, my dad bought it new and he sold it a couple of years ago for about $2000. I got the car during my high school years and he got it back when I went off to college. I kind of wish he still had it so I could restore or street rod it.

1956 Studebaker Commander was my first car. Change the color of this picture to green and add tons of rust and it would be a picture of my actual car. I bought it from my aunt for $35; it broke down on the way home. My mother towed me the rest of the way using a rope that got tangled up in the front wheel. I was 16 then; took the engine apart and rebuilt it using Glen's Motor Manual that I checked out from the library. I had no money so I re-used most of the parts that weren't actually broken. Oh, the memories.

That would be the awe inspiring 1978 Subaru coupe in Silver.

Aaron, one of the best cars I ever owned was a 1989 Cavalier. Stripped like you had. I got 330,000 miles out of it. And yes, I sold it right before I got the Viper. On a cents per mile cost of driving, nothing could beat that car. Paid 6k for it. It still runs well.......very well. Know the people who have it.

I think that I made more on that car in insurance claims for getting hit in accidents, than the original price tag. The capital expenditure was NEGATIVE. It got 35 miles per gallon.

You guys are going to be very jealous on this one.....

I am pretty young so here was my first ride....

Imagine it in white........................ The car was so pathetic I think I could run faster up hill.... I ended up driving it on soccer fields and running into other things until I upgraded...
Man.......I feel very lucky now.... lol

'70 Mustang Mach 1, grabber blue, shaker hood, c-6, white interior. Bought it on my 17th birthday 11/73. Paid $2,400, put $1200 down and my dad co-signed a bank loan, 24 mo @ $69.00 mo. Got laid off from my part time job at a gas station 2 weeks later in the 1st "energy crisis". Sold it a year later when I was a broke college student to another teenager from Galveston TX. Loved that car and I'd pay good $'s for it back. Then 2nd car was a '70 4-door Chevy Nova that I bought from my dad for $800. Bench seats, rubber floor mats. Don't miss that one.

My first car is my current car. 2006 Mazda3 Sport (hatch) in Titanium Grey Metallic. 5speed, sunroof, and 220hp up from the 160 stock. By the way, I am only 20 years old, and as much as I love the Viper (and nothing touches it) I love my Mazda. Great little car. I can haul all 12 of my guitars in it plus my amps.

1976 Camaro Rally Sport with a 305 V-8 and a 3 speed on the floor. My Dad helped me learn about cars with this one. I had to replace the clutch, so he helped me tear it apart, and when it came time to put it all back together, he told me "your on your own, figure it out!", and I did. Had some fun times as a teenager in that car.:drive:

First car, was a 91 Chevrolet S-10 pick up truck. It was maroon and I don't have a pic so i took one off the net. I had some good times in that little truck, but I was glad to get rid of it!

My first car was a 1970 Hemi Challenger. Hemi Orange with a white top. Bought it new. (that should tell you my age) Sorry no digitals but plenty of Kodaks on file.

I said the day that I bought it, "this car will be collectible someday". I sold it 17 years later for 3 times my new price. It was well taken care of with just over 60K miles. If I kept it 20 more years I could have retired. No regrets though. It was a fun car.

Fastest I ever drove it was 140MPH at a whopping ~8000RPM on US41in Indiana. It was out of steam at that point and very light.

Getting a Viper, will be kinda like coming home.

Oh No...and I am in product development for another car company.

1951 Dodge Coronet flathead six...fluid drive. Bought from the neighbors. It had been stored for quite a few years. $500 dollars. Had 15,000 original miles when we got it in 1968. ...Shared with my brother. Certainly no muscle car, but a huge back seat did have it's advantages in those days. ;)

Our 2nd car was a 1969 MGC-GT. 6 cylinder Austin Healy engine in there. We had it to 135 MPH. Very limited production vehicle. Electric OD in 3rd and 4th gear. we rigged up a dimmer switch on the floor to speed the switch to OD. By working the OD switch you could go from 0-110 in 3rd gear. The only way you could tell it from the MGB was the little hood scoop on the driver's side for the extra carb. We trolled for TR6s and the like.

Hey John,

My buddy had a Pontiac Sunfire from the early 80's (not the same shape as my cavalier) and we called it "The Sunchicken" as neither of our cars were fast unless we were going downhill.

The funniest part of my Cavalier was when the baffles in the muffler came loose and the car would whistle as I drove....just imagine as the engine revs, the whistle going up in tone and you have the idea.....it was so hilarious and so distinctive I refused to fix it and buy a new muffler. I remember coming home one night and my Dad saying it was time to buy a muffler and when I said "Great, I love when you buy me stuff!".....he didn't laugh and didn't buy me a muffler.

I too know people who had roughly that vintage of Cavalier that ran well into the 200,000 mile territory and usually they got rid of them because they failed safety inspections over massive rust holes, rather than mechinicals. I'm pleased to hear yours did so amazing!

Regards,
Aaron

I bought a '69 Charger off an old lady for $500 when I was 16. It was painted carpet beige and had more orange peel than a Tropicana factory.

Had a 383 2 bbl with a column shifter. Got stolen first year college. I've always been a Mopar man. Would still have one today if it wasn't for the Viper.

1948 Dodge 4 door with suicide doors in back, straight flathead six, radio and instant-on heater (gasoline in the passenger compartment) and 3 on the tree fluid drive. You could stop at a redlight without even putting in the clutch, and could take off in 3rd gear like a VERY slow automatic. It was top heavy, but had mohair interior with foot rests in the back, and fabric pullups.

First, the exciting part- My first car was brand new, purchased hot off the showroom floor 50% by me and 50% by my Dad in the Fall of 1977 when I was a senior in high school.

Now the not-so-exciting part- It was a stripped-down 1976 4-door Ford Maverick model year holdover (NOT the 2-door model, which had a tiny bit of sportiness to it....). It was the same basic car as my 65 year old aunt drove, until she sold it to buy something a little sportier....

In a few years, the car got passed down to my sister, and I moved on to other things.

Notwithstanding that the car was just about as plain as could be (many were brown, to add to the plain-ness, although mine was a nice dark blue), I still to this day get a little jazzed up (in a strange sort of way) when I see a 4-door survivor. (On my first date with my wife some 10 years ago, I met one on the highway, and immediately turned around and gave chase, just to see it up close.)

For Christmas last year, my wife commissioned a local pencil artist to make the drawing attached below.... a 1976 Maverick and a 1998 GTS.

Took it to college - many good stories....

Poor thing got flattened out by a big tree that was blown over in a hurricane.

My first was a 64 Falcon Sprint in high school. I bought a wrecked 69 Mach1 and put the 351 and 9" rear end in the Falcon. What a sleeper. In high school at lunch we would go drag racing on a deserted road (now a major one) and the Falcon could shut down the New 70 454 Chevelles and ElCaminos. Man, Those were the days. I almost bought another one last summer at a Goodguys show. It doesn't fit with the Viper. Choices I guess. Bigger back seat but Those were the days!!!:D

My first car was a 1988 Dodge Diplomat Dupage County (IL) squad car. With a search light and the air cleaner lid flipped upside down and muffler removed. Vrooom!

That Cavalier STILL has the original exhaust, and passes emissions. They angled the exhaust right, so no condensation lays in there, eating the internals. And, unbelievably, the car was fast. For the late 80's, it was very fast. As there was only an engine, and no extraneous stuff, it was very light. No AC.... sapping power. One of the best economy cars America ever made. Six thousand bucks, out the door. Treat that baby to Mobil 1 and she will last beyond what is expected.

'64 Barracuda, bought for $50.00, that's right. Had no motor, trans was shot, but it was all there otherwise. Bought a Duster donor car for the engine (318) and trans (904), and for a total $500.00 I had a good driver for high school.
Trust me, it was cool!!:2tu: Fold down rear seat (for action);), rear de-fogger, cool lines, and great orig. upholstery.

Sadly, I don't have a single pic of it. Here's an ad off the 'net, same colour as mine was orig. But mine had much primer on it!

Very neat stories, I'm really enjoying this thread!! Damn does it bring back a lot of memories when think of the Mavericks, Diplomats, Falcons, Valiants, etc. I've been given rides in or drove myself. My Dad bought a '79 Dodge Diplomat in a pale blue (I think it was a cheap re-paint) and when I first started driving, it was the car he leant me.....damn I hated that car!! The headliner was falling down and would rest in my mullett (yep had one of them), and every time I left my neighborhood (a rather crappy one), I'd get stopped by the cops!! I got stopped 22 times in my first two years of driving and everytime, they'd search the car for alcohol or drugs and come up empty, then give me some BS excuse that I had a taillight out, but amazingly it's working now that I'm stopped. It had a slant 6 engine that detonated above 4000 rpm and it would not die at all....I bet it's still running in the wrecking yard as a parts-fetching car!

Regards,
Aaron

Ford Fairmont futura. The fancy Fairmont with split vinyl top. It was chocolate brown with ORANGE top and ORANGE vinyl interior. I was stylin!! I could make it about one mile down the road in the winter before it stalled and I had to stick a screwdriver in the carb to open the choke. I still have it, the screwdriver that is.
