Unless you get it from someone else, do not buy it from HMS, look at the performace area, or search on problems and HMS,,,,,,

And no, the box is not worth the money, have your stock box modified, it is a lot lot cheaper and does the same thing.

I beg to differ. It is by far the best looking air box
available and does make a difference in you mph on the
drag strip and on the dyno.
Do it yourself rigging of the airbox looks like crap on
a $70K car. The cheapness of this group sometimes amazes me.

I take offense to the comments by getbit. I did the airbox mod myself and it looks great. In fact, I would bet that most would not even notice that it was done. I bought another front section to modify and kept the original. In my opinion, all the carbon fiber crap just makes your car look like a kids Civic. Mark....you are right!

Does he have a website and is it hard to install yourself? Is this what's considered a rear airbox with 3" outlets? And is this what's considered taking out the rain baffles?

I agree with Mark Cooper..an air box isn't going to do anything for you....except look nice.
To improve power and performance, you must force more air through the engine (as if anyone needs to hear this). A passive device, such as an airbox, no matter how nice looking, will not do that. You may get an insigificant increase in boost....but it won't amount to much.
So don't waste your money, unless you want a custom look when you open the hood.

Matt, the comment I made regarding the "pocketbook tightness" of many of the VCA members come from the many threads regarding the price of VOI, the airbox, etc. Obviously, a gutted stock box should make similar power. The carbon fibre setup is very much for looks - as are the $3000.00 stripes that come OPTIONAL on the GTS. This does nothing for performance, only looks. The fact that you made your box and it looks stock would not appeal to the people inquiring about the carbon fibre box. Obviously, those who inquire about such things DO NOT WANT A STOCK LOOK!
The polished 547 HRE's I have don't make any power either (and were VERY expensive) but they LOOK great. The bottom line is that the HMS box is effective and looks wonderful. Is the pricing too high? That is, of course, relative to your financial situation. Some people have bigger budgets and different priorities than others.

Being on the subject of air boxes , was going to modify mine instead put on TNT`s tubes and cones. Iwas concerned about rain getting in so I keep a roll duct tape with me.( silver= matches color of car). Next trip wife & I took ran in to heavy rain so taped up hole in hood , lost 3 to 4 mpg. Rain stopped after 600 miles took off tape got back my 3 to 4 mpg. Now I`m looking for ways to get more air into engine compartment besides the hood duct.

Sounds like an honest testimonial.Unless he changes the airbox at the track under very controlled conditions,1.5MPH gain with your box is not creditble.Lower Temp that day and/or some tire spin can easily account for 1.5MPH change.Flipside,Andre Agassie says "Image is everything".

Jason---point taken. I agree that everyone's "threshold of pain" when it comes to price is subjective. I have parts on my Viper that are purely for looks too. But, I also made my own smooth hoses for less than half of what it takes to buy them. They look right, fit right, and work.

The airbox alone is worth a solid 4-5 mph down the front straight tri-oval at TWS in my nearly stock car. I used to be seeing solid red to get to 135 mph. Now, I get 140+ every lap. It ain't just the rain baffle delete, it's the smooth contours behind the filters that probably help the most. If you're not doing triple digit speeds, it probably isn't worth it from a performance perspective, but dang, it looks GOOD!

I have an HMS carbon fiber air box and it cost me absolutely nothing. I won it in a raffle (Donated by John at a Portland event a couple of years ago). It is a very fine looking airbox and always attracts attention when I have the hood open. Does it increase power? I don't know because I did not run a before and after dyno with that as the only mod. If I had to pay $1200 for it would it be high on my list of mods? Probably not. Do I like it? Yes I do - one of the coolest items I have ever won in a raffle. Come to think of it, it's the only thing I have ever won.

The MotorTrend articles you refer to were simply done before HMS had developed the airbox. Not really a mystery. Naturally, all the packages offered by HMS have slightly changed over the years to what is included in each package. The airbox just came

Getbit, the packages have changed over the years, you don't know the half of it. John, do you think anyone here would be interested in knowing that Steve Kaas bought his HMS airbox used from Heffner's Performance? More importantly do you think they would like to know why I had a HMS carbon box for sale? Hmmm.

I am happy with my HMS box, although I did not buy it directly from HMS, and paid substatially less than retail. You sure can't beat the looks! I have heard of some HMS boxes rubbing aginst the hood liner or hinges and wearing holes in them - anyone else have this problem?

I have heard several times that the best thing about the Hennessey Carbon Fiber airbox is the modification behind the air filters. Is there anyone else out there that sells a modified airbox that has the area behind the filters altered too. I can't see spending $1,200 for the Hennessey airbox, but if someone made a plain one that had the same contours as Hennessey's without the carbon fiber expense I'd buy it.
