Just saw the piece on MT TV. Not too bad, but the times are pretty pathetic. I don't think either of the drivers are too good at launching the car. (Either that, or the run-flat tires have no traction!) Clearly the Viper obliterated the Z06 in the acceleration runs. A half-second difference in 0-60 and 1/4 miles is not "pretty close" in my book. Considering that driver Matt Stone (incidentally, author of a book called "Viper" published by Motorbooks Intl and obviously a fan) is built for comfort not speed, and the guy driving the Vette was a near malnutrition-case, the Viper was carrying a definite weight penalty.

I watched the rest of the show about the Shelby cars too- Whooaah, talk about a disappointment. I was suprised how poorly the $145,000 Shelby Series 1 did against the 35 year old Cobras! It was embarrasing to say the least. I may not be a big fan of the SRT styling, but it's light years ahead of the Series 1, and it beats the pants off it for $60 grand less.

I feel sorry for the poor Series 1 owners that bought into all the hype on that car.

I was really encouraged by the show. Thought the SRT looked so much better than the Vet. If they just solve that pesky heat problem a little.

Must say, that portly fella driving the SRT looked like he was shoehorned into a carnival ride.

Did MT get faster times out of GEN 2?

I went to my video "archives" to review Motor Trend TV when they first tested the Gen 2 back in '96:
0-60: 4.2 seconds
1/4 mile: 12.8 @ 110mph

But I know I've seen faster times for the Gen 2 elsewhere.

Motor Trend's Jim Scoutten said it best when he quoted the Gen 2 GTS:

"So how do you think we're going to sum this up, that we don't like it because it doesn't have a cupholder and gets terrible gas mileage, oh man, GET SERIOUS. This is the closest thing to a factory built racer you're likely to be able to buy in your lifetime. If there's any way you can possible afford it, go to your Dodge dealer and beg him to take your order."

But this time around, I think the editors at MT didn't want to offend the Vette and made this comparison between the SRT and Z06 seem like they're almost evenly matched. No way. The numbers don't lie, the SRT is the clear winner in the performance category with a half-second advantage in 0-60 and in the quarter mile.

Thanks for the info!

The bit on the Shelby Cobras was cool too, but d&mn that ***** that the new one (Series 1) doesn't do better than the old ones (or even matches them really...).

Well the Series 1 does have a GM motor which might explain that. The price for the Series 1 is WAY WAY too high! The Series 1 is a great looking car but the price should be around $50K for what you get. There was a guy here in Arizona that bought one and was so disappointed that he was dumping it for a little over $100K. If it were priced right perhaps we would see them in races. First thing I would do would be to dump the GM motor and go back to Ford. But that isn't Shelby's call anymore since he sold the biz to a corporation. Even the 427 Cobra Shelby American is now producing is priced high at $80K.
