Its not really why people buy a Viper, but I've heard some really impressive numbers - so lets see who gets the best real world mileage out of their Viper.

here's the rules: The car can have any modifications except must have all plug wires connected (Da!), and the car must be at least cruising at 60mph and keeping up with traffic The mileage must be measured over a full tank - not a 60 mile economy drive as the tank changes with temperature etc and its not as accurate over a short trip.

Ok guys - lets see who can get the best results - and please tell us what you've done to achieve a better result than the factory 21mpg highway rating.

23.5 mpg @ 80-85mph (~1500 rpm) (4 tanks). Full exhaust, mopar performance computer. 3000' elevation change (up then down) but most of it flat Interstate highway.

14.5 mpg going to work and back (better than the Yukon on the same road??)

I got 17.3 MPG with my Sean Roe Supercharger, VEC2 with 93 octane computer card, and many supporting mods for the Roe Supercharger in a city/highway/full throttle cycle. My Viper has been held hostage as Queen of My Garage due to snow since then. Maybe in another week I can do a cycle of city/highway/full throttle with my new VEC2 94 octane computer card. All I know is my Viper gets lots better gas mileage than my heavily modified Dodge Ram truck and better gas mileage than anything else (all Mopars) at my house.

I got 22.5 mpg driving to to Thunderhill (smooth tubes, filters). Averaged about 70 mph with a few bursts to 110. I get 7-8 mph driving to/from work.

I drove my 2001 yellow GTS cross country last year, just over 7700 miles and averaged over 23mpg. Made it home from Arkansas to Southern California in just over 16 hours driving time so I was not limping along. Great car on a long trip and better gas mileage than I expected.

Dang I'm ruled ineligible. In 4 years I've never ran a full tank of gas thru on the street. I don't even know the cruising mileage for a full tank of gas!

In January of this year I did a three-day road trip from Dallas,TX to Seattle,WA in my '98 RT/10. 2398 miles! Amazingly, the average fuel economy was about 24.5 miles per gallon! One tankful got me 25.2 miles per gallon, even. I almost exclusively used 6th gear.

Must've been a real b@tch to leave the gas station!

Best I've gotten is 22.8MPG on the way to VOI7 caravaning with the trailered vipers @ ~70MPH with an occasional spirited burst.

When I was running the stock config on the car I drove from Atl to Jax Fl and got about 20mpg (keeping it mostly @ 80mph).
I visited Sean Roe's shop and picked up some goodies. Installed his smooth tubes and S&B filters, on the drive home I lead footed all the way back (3am) doing 100+ on I-10 and seldomly under 80 thru GA and I got 22mpg. Maybe I saved gas mileage by 100+ cruising, yeah,,,,that's the ticket!

I really tried to keep it under 80 but something was wrong with my right foot. :)

Hogdealer - you must spend your time on 101 behind tourists! Lot's of 2nd gear action would net you 8-9mpg. (or you could be trying to pull the New Carissa off the beach??) If not those things, me thinks you are having too much fun.

Great response guys - quite some variation too. Now some of you ol boys just got no self discipline y'hear!

...the wooden spoon award was a contest between jcasparl who got 7-8mpg around town, fletcher who could only achieve a best ever of 13mpg, and hog dealer who averaged 7-8mpg! You guys are sick puppies did you know that.

After much consideration - the 2003 economy drive wooden spoon goes to Hog Dealer for reporting nothing over 8mpg! Hog - take this pill and go see Doug Levin or Jason Heffner ASAP, other than that I fear there's no hope for you.

The Viper Greenies award for 2003 goes to Dave Adkins who managed to top 25mpg in his econoViper! For those of us outside the good ol USA - that means 29mpg in the old british imperial gallon terms... so for those smug Euro drivers out there, try getting 29mpg in your 7.3 litre Brabus V12! Well done Dave! Your prize should be a ride in Treynors car so you can learn what a Viper is SUPPOSED TO DO :) How about it Ben?

Now Treynor didn't reply to this thread (he read the title and ran away ;) - but I'm sure he could ****** that wooden spoon from Hog with 1250hp to play with :)

Now there's a member out there who has claimed to have got 28mpg - where are you? Was that Amercian mpg? If so, what was your secret? 28mpg = 32.6mpg outside the USA! The Viper world needs you now.

oh - Onerareviper! I have no idea what would happen to economy if you pulled a few plug wires - the depths of my ignorance can only be matched my maxwedges technical knowledge ;)

Happy Vipering guys!

I have gotten over 26 mpg with the '94 when running a 3 hour drive up to the north end of the lower peninsula of Michigan, at about 65 mph. The tach stays at about 1200 rpm in 6th gear for that kind of mileage, and it's [******] boring, but the car will do very well at those rpms in 6th gear. It doesn't lug at all, because the V10 has so much torque. Pretty amazing that you can actually get better mileage than some 4 cylinder cars on longer trips with lots of open highway, as long as you keep the speed at about 65 mph and in 6th gear.
Most of the time however, it'll usually get about 10 to 11 mpg around town.

That's impressive Roland!

I'm convinced that a reworked Viper with good compression, tight 0.040" or better quench (piston to chamber clearance), lean cruise mix and plenty of vacuum advance - not overdone, but just optimised for cruising - could get 30mpg at 65mph interstate average. Yeah - it'd be boring as hell - but i know it'd impress me!

I've always liked the idea of being able to smoke pretty much anything I came up against, but when cruising along with the traffic getting as good a mileage as everyone else was in their econo family sedans.

I've played with fuel vapourisation and know there's a lot more to be had than what we can buy... but you need big resources to make it commercial - and the will to fight the vested interests who do not want you to do it. The 200mpg flathead V8 story of the 1930's with Pogue carburettor is alas true... but it won't work as well now as the modern fuel has chemicals in it that will destoy the catalytic reaction after about 1500miles (due to residue build up)... and I'm unaware of anyone overcoming that problem. There's enough energy in 1 gallon of fuel to send a Viper a mile straight up into the air... don't believe for a second the oil industry and car industry is giving us everything they've got!

I reckon direct chamber injection utilising commercial diesel pressures (15,000psi) would give some interesting results (very good atomisation)along with adding nickle plating to piston crowns and chambers then adding water injection and a tuned electrical current. Just a theory.... but when a molecule of water turns to steam (let alone "cracks") it expands instantly 1500 times its original size - time that right and its got to be good for you ;) ..afterall, what is a 1,200,000hp Nuclear powered Air Craft Carrier - nothing but a steam turbine. Water is indestructible - if you superheat it, it will drive anything, crack it and it releases more energy than grandma after a bean and egg sandwich.

There's been a string of 100% water engines that you'll be hard pressed to find now... one guy here built em, and he's been missing for 2 decades. The skeptics can laugh, but try laughing to his family left behind, they didn't find it funny when they found out two guys in suits paid a visit and then he wasn't around anymore. A friend of mine knew him, I only wish I had - I might have picked up some missing links in the puzzle.

PS. these water engines did not need hydrogren storage tanks - just tap water! They were car engines as we know them that were modified. For a while he was a bit of a local legend in his home town and he used to drop some jaws pulling up at service stations and filling up from the tap!

Imagine refilling your Viper from the tap! And boy is there some serious power in cracked H20 - makes a gasoline engine look like a skateboard!

we played a bit one day and found that 50/50 water and gasolene mixes and burns really well if you add a few drops of dishwashing liquid... we later played with a few other things and got the lawn mower to run on 50% water and make more power than before.. the last 50% however... when I'm rich and semi-retired that's an area I'd like to play in some more ;)

we also used to get a repeated 6% power gain on race cars by filtering their pump gas through an activated carbon filter... there were a few other tricks that worked too but I'm raving on...

better go before the anti-conspiracy buffs come to take me away ;)

I've gotten 24 and 26MPG on a couple longer trips running between 65-70MPH, before I put in my 3.55 gears.

In the city I'm averaging about 14-16MPG, lower if I drive the car hard.

This will bring doubt to some here but, I have gotten 28.6 MPG. That's Atlanta to Destin Fl. Traveled at night so not much trafic. Prior to that the best was 25.? commuting.
