Spent all morning replacing the pads on the viper wth EBCs (had billexs.) Everything went ablsolutely smoothly - calipers pushed in as instructed, pads were loosing in the holds, pins tapped back in correctly.

Took the car out for a 10 minute spin and the pads on the drivers side completely incinerated themselves and the rotor! When I stopped the well was smoking and the rotor was glowing red!!! The other side also looked slightly cooked.

EBCs did the exact same thing on my honda. I contacted the company and was simply told I installed them wrong (though I managed the other three fine) and was not entitled to a replacement set. Now I have a fried set of pads and rotors and no money to replace them!

HOW DID THIS HAPPEN!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Was this EBC Greens on the rear? Might be that the pins that the caliper is supposed to slide on were a little rusty and stuck. If you need rear pads, let me know - I have a good pair and a ~fried pair.

Actually it was the fronts on this one and the rears on the honda. I have never seen a rotor get so hot so quick. The thing that annoys me is that I started the car up and applied the brakes before putting the wheels back on (just in case) and I could spin the tires without effort (to me meant the caliper wasn't frozen shut.)

I just don't get it, luckily I managed to salvage the billexs so I'll be able to drive. The thing is that this is the second of five pairs of EBCs that I burnt up within two miles of installing - to me that's not a good ratio.

I don't mean to sound like a pill, but maybe you should have the pads replaced by a brake shop.
There could be something fundamental that you are missing in the pad installation. I've had my EBCs (greens in front, reds in back) for over a year and they have been great.

Did you scuff the rotors, and chamfer the leading/trailing edges of the pads? Are you using some sort of grease on the pads that catches fire?

I *think* I may have figured it out. Apparently the new pads are slightly larger (slightly being maybe an 1/8 of on inch.) This is causeing the pads to rub on the jagged edge of the rotors - hense burn up. Its been getting progessivley better - they no longer smoke and fade is minium now, but the car still pulls sharply to one side during braking.

Oh, and there was a fine mist of what looked like brake fluid on the pads themselves, but we couldn't find a leak on the calipers - any idea if these pads bleed on their own?

Two words for ya bonky. BRAKE SHOP

Lead me the $525 I was quoted for replacement of pads and turning of rotors and I'll be glad to run it to the shop. Until then I had a $125 budgeted for this project and I'm already over it.

You pay for the parts and I will drive down to Del. and do them for you for $100 labor, plus the cost of turning the rotors. (you pay, less then $10 each)

This thread HAS to be a JOKE. Ok.. I'll bite. Maybe the side that the car pulls away from during braking is the side that caught fire?????? Possibly that caliper is FRIED......

I think you should change your screen name to Colonel......since you drive the KFC Viper.

Dude.... don't drive the car if the brakes are screwed like this.... just put the Viper away until you can either take a class on how to work on brakes.. or until you can afford to have someone do this work for you.
Remember there are innocent citizens out there that you might endanger.

Bonkers, hate to be the bearer of more bad news but after you get it all straightened out your fluid should be flushed if it was subjected to all the "red hot" heat.
Good Luck!

Dude if you don't know how to do something right then perhaps you should find someone who does. You are driving a high performance car and you went through two sets within two miles???? You have a site at your fingertips and after the first burn job perhaps you should have asked questions? I am not trying to be an a-hole but there is more to owning high performance car than simply buying one. We all have budgets but there are key things like the brakes that one should not cut the corners on. Apparently you do not know how to change the pads on the Viper and I would save the money and pay someone to do it right. Your life and your passengers are worth more.

One other thing is perhaps the fire damaged something down there?

You have successfully spent more money in damages and wasted more time than just taking it to a professional in the first place. It doesn't always pay to be cheap. In your case, your lucky you didn't wreck your car and get jacka$$ of the month on the 5 oclock news, when they found out you put the pads on a$$backwards and crashed into a Walmart.

Sounds like you should have had your rotors turned. I think if you would have done some shopping you could have found a mechanic that knows what he is doing and done this for less than $100 plus parts. God only knows what you did or what damage you caused. I am sure it not any fault of the pad. Brakes are not something you should half ***.

Bonkers, For many many years I changed my brakes out on all of my cars and
never once had an issue. Then one year I did the brakes on my truck. The same
thing that you are describing happened to the truck. I took it apart again and
all looked fine. But still having problems I finally took it to the dealer
and the mechanic diagnosed it as pinched brake lines. I was told that the
brake lines were pinched under the rubber covering so I could not have seen
the damage. don't ask me how I bent the brake lines but it did happen. The
brake lines were replaced and they worked perfectly afterwards. That is going
to be my guess as to your problem now. I'd change out the brake lines to the
calipers.

Now when I change out my brakes I'm always very careful of the brake lines no
matter what car I'm working on.

Bonkers,
You're breaking my heart man. I do know what it's like to be in a financial bind, it bites. Here's what you need to do. Call Jon B (my preferred parts supplier)and get the cost on a set of rotors, pads, and some fresh fluid. Then call Jerome and see when he can come down and do the brake install. PM me with the total including the 100.00 for Jerome's labor, and your address and I will send you the money. No loan, no strings attached, lets just get that snake back on the road. Just do something nice for someone else in the future and we will call it even.

Very cool of you Doc.

I would like to add, sit in with Jerome to see how he does it. That will be future savings to put towards more mods or other items that need repair in the future.

I work so fast he would have no time to see what is going on. It's a habit from my old flat rate days.

Plus I don't like any man behind me if you know what I mean. Or in front of me either for that matter.

Offer still stands........

I wanted to take a moment to thank all you [****]bags for all the badgering and cheap shots. Who knows, I might have actually solved this problem last weekend if there were more guys here like Dixter (read: wanting to actually help a guy out instead of patronize him.) At the very least I could have saved the $45 it took to have a "Pro Brake Shop" tell me there was nothing apparently wrong.

For those who might want to learn something.

The cause of this was the brake line being tangled up in the suspension coil. Apparently the caliper was installed wrong at one point (before I bought it) and it caused the line to bend towards, instead of away, from the suspension. The reason I, my friend, or the mechanic I took it to couldn't figure the problem out was because when the car was jacked up the line stretched away from the coil (This also allowed the wheel to spin freely while on the jack) and appeared to be in the right position. When the car was put on the ground the line bent towards the coil and the weight crushed the line shut. The pressure in the line then caused the caliper to close - hence burn-up. It was only a matter of time before the line got caught - just coincidence it happened on a new set of pads.

I want to thank Dixter and Cooper, I'm waiting on the new pads, line, and fluid but everything seems to be working fine now.

PS - For future record: I don't halfass my work.

If you decide on a new (used) set of rotors don't pay any more than shipping cost. There are millions of Viper rotors laying around.

That's my scumbag advice.

Your right, I'm a dick, sorry I guess you must have used the "higher" quality krylon spray paint when you refinished your qtr panel...
