OK STU if you really want to save Viper brothers $ than why you overcharged me by $50. The quote that I gave you was inflated by me by $50 to see what you will say. So after all your prices are not better and with the tech support from your own basement I will have to pass on that offer.
I can't take a risk on a stolen software and maybe remarked processor.

One thing you fail to see that copy rights is what makes this country great. I would be pissed if somebody copied my software or web design and sold it to somebody. My company pays every year a 2-3K in software upgrades. That is the cost of doing business

Funny, I have been in a computer business for 15 years and I know what cost what. If you can get those parts for $500 then you must get going with your company because your prices are better than what Dell and other big OEMs pay LOL.

Maybe those parts came of the truck like the MS software.

LOL, the teflon Don of the computer industry!

Stu, I really don't think you understand the seriousness of your situation. Software piracy is a multi-billion dollar a year loss for software manufacturers. Microsoft alone probably accounts for a significant portion of those losses. They do not mess around when it comes to this stuff.

Mark is being way too nice if you ask me. He could have you behind bars as early as tomorrow morning if he feels like it.

Honestly, though, *** were you thinking? You come on a website full of people you don't know and start spouting off about your discount computer business and then you publicly admit to software piracy for personal gain?

Hey everybody.......I've been selling automatic assault rifles to street gangs and I want to offer my Viper buddies the same huge discounts that the Bloods and the Crips enjoy.

My advice to you is this:

Keep digging. Eventually that hole you've put yourself in will be so deep that they'll never be able to find you.

Pssst - anyone want a cheap DVD?

come behind the Navigator then.

:) This thread is hilarious!

I have to think tho that Stu is an alter ego - nobody with the intelligence to put together a top quality computer could be as dumb as these posts suggest.... hahha - one moment he's offering a free service, the next - in the only quote given - he's making $250 in labor.... hahhahah too funny

This is a good thread :D but in the unlikely event it is serious - Stu - I really think you are going to like Bubba. I know he will like you.

I've heard he's got a bit of a temper, and at 320lb nobody is keen to tell him - but he'll undertstand your needs and give you a nice time in prison for offering pirated software on a public forum. Don't forget to bring plenty of vaseline. Think of it as your last kind act to yourself.

and for the record - Dell is not crap. I personally have one that is still going strong after 5 years and that is not unusual for them.

"...nobody with the intelligence to put together a top quality computer could be as dumb as these posts suggest..."

Putting together a computer these days takes little more skill than your average assembly line worker. The freakin' cables are even color-coded.

While it may take a certain degree of experience and research to seperate the cream from the cruft, it still doesn't require a CompSci degree to know that if you stick to Intel and ASUS motherboards, you generally can't go wrong.

(There are exceptions, of course, such as Intel's 820 chipset MTH issue)

Back when building machines was actually profitable (5+ years ago) on a per unit level, I assembled some sweet systems. Of course, I actually took the time to read and understand the white papers from the companies about every component, known interactions with other common components, read the API for the firmware, etc. etc. etc. to make sure any box I sold really was as solid as anything available. I researched everything down to the power supply MTBF, air flow inside the case...even the types of screws that were used. This was long before sites like Tom's Hardware, Sharky, HardOCP and the like popularized such practices.

In those 5 years, and having sold hundreds of systems, there has been exactly 1 system failure, and that is because the building it was in took a direct lightning strike. Yes it was on a UPS but those things don't do much against direct hits. Fried the UPS, as well.

The point is, the practice of 'building' computers is actually nothing more than assembly these days. If you can work a set of legos, you can assemble a computer.

My box building skills are now merely a subset of what I do for a job, though it is still fun to watch people freak when I reprogram a failed TX Northbridge from some forgotten dust-covered DNS server instead of just replacing the box.

Ahhhhh... the gool ol' days.

"...and for the record - Dell is not crap."

Oddly enough, they actually aren't. I've torn them down to the component level dozens of times, and for the most part, on a component-for-component basis, they are the best mass produced boxes out there. The now defunct Digital Corporation used to make the best workstations I'd ever seen, outside of a high-quality hand-built box.

When people ask me to recommend a desktop computer, I always tell them to get a Dell. For laptops, it's IBM.

ahhh, remeber the good OLD days, when "component level" ment "resistor, transistor, capacitor..." not "hard drive, motherboard, video card"?

I agree 100% - today's computers are so modular that just about anyone can build a PC, and yes, Dell makes a good machine too.

Is that a 5U4 full wave rectifier?

By the way, anyone who uses tubes in an audio amp probably believes quite a bit of other strange science.

I have maybe 3 posts in 3 years but felt I had to comment on this thread (yes a little comic relief after a tough month) but should be a red flag for Stu.
Stu, notice to date 1,100 people have read this thread (they are not ALL your friends). Most are honest hard working taxpayers and professionals, some with propriatary rights to software and art or music. (not to mention it should be in the off topic forum).

While I'm here, Hello to the Viper crowd. Toronto's ugly winter is finally coming to an end :) warmed my car up yesterday, no problems :) the Hummers going in and the Vipers coming out!

(Even though the pic says it's a 6550, it looks like a KT88 tube to me - both are interchangable.)

Joe117, didn't you know...the earth really is flat? :D

When I was a boy we had to make our own wire out of old copper water pipe.

Solicitation.
Intent to commit a crime.
Conspiracy to commit a crime.
Admission of a crime (saying you’ve passed out copyrighted software).

Free speech does NOT cover planning or telling others to perform illegal acts in a PUBLIC setting. i.e. inciting a riot is illegal.

Do what you want… you may never be arrested, but we know you’ll never be very successful in life either. Low ethics = low self-esteem, under achievement, ignorance that doesn't learn (*****), and improper self-assessment.

But then most "morons" think ignorance is bliss, so it's a life choice, I guess...

As for STUGOTS - he is just trying to get ahead in life. I think he knows better now.

FYI: The sign of a ***** is they don't learn from their mistakes, they just claim they were right, and keep making them over and over, wondering why people are always picking on them :p )

Are these words too big for you Sparky?

VENM8R, joe117...
It's no rectifer, it's an amplifier. Yes, it says 6550 on it, and I understand KT88 to be an equivelent, but that's really reaching back for me as to how all that works.

As far a "stange science"... I don't get your point. I know this tube has about a 3% THD, and solid state will give me < 0.001% THD. There's nothing "strange" about vacuum tubes... Heck, you're probably looking at a 17" one right now. You do know computer monitors are just a big CRT (cathode ray TUBE), right?

AND... Radio and TV stations (and NASA) use vacuum tubes in high-power applications (tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of watts). Don't believe me... get someone to give you a tour of a TV or ratio transmission tower... they're solid state for pre-amp, then a BIG GLASS TUBE for final output.

(The tubes NASA uses for shaker tables are about 18", and generate over 100,000 watts of power... they'll shear the head off a 1/2" bolt in ONE JOLT, under the bolt's own weight holding just a fender washer!)

JDR, damn im never gonna be like you so succesfull and walking around with a stick hanging out my asp. well i wont miss it buddy i do what i wanna do in my life it doesnt matter what anybody thinks. i will live my life the way i want to because im the one who has to deal with it. your views and beliefs is the way you deal with it. success is looked at in many ways. atleast im not a tight asp like yourself going around telling people what is and what isnt on the internet. what is success? 6 years ago i was roofing houses and making 60 bucks a day, living in a 3 bedroom house with 4 people. one of the most difficult jobs known to man i must say. i went back to school after 2 years of that bs got a technical degree in computer drafting. i bought my first house 200K, bought a viper, escalade, tractor, truck many of horses(which i love)and have traveled many of places around this world. i consider that as being sucessfull. just because i talk and walk in a different world than your used to doesnt mean im not sucessfull. BIAAAAAAAAATCH!!!!
