Been considering getting a B&M for a while, but is it absolutely necessary to drill the tunnel to get the front two bolts out, or does it just ease the situation. I don't feel right about drilling into my Viper, even if it is under the console out of sight.

Also I see both natural aluminum pieces and those that are blue anodized, how do they come from the factory in terms of finish.

Thanks

I would say that with the right combination of 1/4" sockets, universals, and extensions that it could be done without the drilling. You may change your mind about the concern of drilling once you see the area - as its completely hidden.

Good Luck and post when you are successful!

No, you do not need to drill the tunnel. You can use a regular wrench to get in there. But it is 10 times harder. I did it a couple of weeks ago and it took a couple of hours just to get the back bolts loosened and tightened back again.

But no holes.

listen, i just posted on my install on the bm shifter, from what i understand the difference in the 2 styles is the all billet look aluminum look one like in the how-to section is the old one with the adjustable stops. the newer version in blue is non-adjustable. and the hardest bolts to get at are not the two front bolts, only the passenger side front and the passenger side rear are tough. i will say the toughest part of the install was without using a stick magnet trying to get the rear passenger side bolt in the hole to torque down, trying it with just your fingers is a *****. if you drop the bolt it looks like you would have to remove the bottom shield off the car to allow this dropped bolt to hit the ground. lucky for me i have thin hands. also i did not a very minimal difference in the shift throw over just the addition of my mgw knob addition. i havenot driven the car yet to be sure, but sitting in the garage banging through the gears feels very positive and i can see missing the 2-3 shift at the drag strip ever again. just rip that stick back straight up in the ball on your hand and in goes right into 3. almost impossible to accidentally toss in 1 again.

Thanks, that is what I thought that with time and skinny hands it can be done. That is too bad though about the finish. I prefer the original natural finish over the anodized blue...

bro, are you nuts, who cares if its hot pink, you never see it once its mounted on the car. NEVER. and i believe the blue to be sharper personally but who gives a sh-t you cant enjoy looking at it buried under the rubber gasket and center console anyways.

I wanted to throw in some input rather than just conjecture :)
I had my b&m installed without drilling the bolts.. it can be installed from underneath the car. My Viper tech did it in about an hour. He loosened up the rear of the tranny, enough to get his hands up in the tunnel and free up a bit of space, unbolted the shifter and put in the new one..
Don't get me started on B&M's quality team though! they assembled my shifter backwards (it will still bolt down etc, you just won't be able to shift into about 4 gears)..

v10kingsnake,

You can still miss a shift with the B&M. I have. Just raise the right elbow when going for 4th it will move the shifter straight back and avoid hitting 2nd in error. I've never had the 1st, 2nd, 1st miss with it.

Roadkill has the right approach. I just installed mine a couple of weeks ago from underneath and it was a piece of cake. Just remove shifter handle from inside the car, then from below remove the pan, the two bolts holding the brace for the rear of the trans and lower the trans a couple of inches. There is plenty of room to R&R the shifter with no damage to anything.

Thanks Jim, I'll have to try that. Got the car up on jacks right now for R&R of the exhaust and roller rockers. Now how do you make sure not to make a mess of the RTV they say to put on it, or is that a step that can be avoided...

I simply put the sealant on both sides of the plastic gasket and pressed it against the bottom of the shifter (to hold it there), then worked the shifter up through the rubber boot (I applied some silicone lube to the shaft to help it slide in  ). Just be sure to get the shifter fork inserted properly in the trans.

If doing it from below - I seem to recall that you may want to loosen the smooth tubes - as when the motor tips - it may bind in that area.

I was going to approach my install from below, but it seemed so much easier - especially since I have huge hands - to just go at it from the top. I'd bet a $100 that you can do from the top without drilling holes with the right combination of 1/4" sockets and universal joint.

Good Luck!
