Header ?\'s

How much noise do you pick up when you put headers on? What causes it? Guessing resonance from the pipes or thinner pipes. I have a GEN I with stock cast manifolds.

Are stock manifolds GEN I or GEN II a significant bottleneck? Looking to do a Roe blower soon, but by no means the ultimate build up. I will sacrifice 10-20 hp all day to save expense and noise.

Any thoughts on a mild port job for the heads? HP vs Expense for a street only car.

Thanks..KW

Re: Header ?\'s

I have just left on the factory manifolds with heat shields. Don't think noise would be a problem, but it would raise heat(ceramic coating helps). I too am staying "cheap" on exhaust for now only going high flow cats and catback....more for good sound and lower sill temps.

For the street porting, probably a waste of $$$. If the wrong person does the work, it will hurt an otherwise stock motor....i.e. loss of port velocity.

I would and will do the headers with the ROE.

Re: Header ?\'s

If you take a look at a dyno curve, those cars without headers tend to have a torque curve that drops much quicker than a car with headers. No matter what you do to the engine the headers are going to help the other mod. Headers without cats could be worth 30-40 hp, depending on the car. The later model Gen2's don't seem to gain as much as the Gen1's and early Gen2's.

Re: Header ?\'s

Originally I had filters ,tubes and a corsa cat back.....I added belanger headers and rt ceramic high flow cats....I wish I did it sooner....better and more throttle response, very quiet on the highway when cruising.....you can carry on a conversation or play cd's...NO droning at all.

But when you get on it , especially in 1st gear...the sound is awesome! like a funny car....It is a personal preference...but I would actually like it louder...the headers are not that loud under normal driving....they make the Viper sound like it should!

Re: Header ?\'s

I have the same setup as 2BADD 4U... except I left the side seal mufflers out. I completely agree with him. When you get on it, everyone clears out, when you hit cruising speed I don't think it is any louder than stock. No drone... I did add smooth tubes and RedLine filters and removed the airbox. I have a small whistle when I accellerate... don't like it, but livable. I will probably chase down the whistle and correct the problem.
