Belanger Headers and Chrome Smooth Tubes \"Check Engine\"

OK, some smart viper owner help me out here. I put Belanger headers on my 2000 RT with Random Tech cats and Belanger exhausts. Did this first and drove it 25 miles or so with no light. Put it back in the garage and put on the smooth tubes. Two starts later the check engine light came on. Codes 134 and 151. Both of those refer to the O2 sensor in the headers. Since that was still under warranty I thought I would let the dealer eat the cost. They tested the 02 sensors and said they were fine and wanted to hit me for a 97 PCM because they said it was less sensitive to the mods. I refused and picked my car back up.

Should I replace the 02 sensors? Or will the air temp sensor located on the passenger side that I moved to one of the chrome smooth tubes be causing this as well.

It is definitely running rich because I have the sulphur odor at idle.

I thought I would get a few opinions before I dropped $140 on 2 new sensors.

Make sure the O2 sensors are mounted in the bungs up on the header tube and not in the ones down on the collector, otherwise the won't heat up fast enough to avoid throwing a code.

Re: Belanger Headers and Chrome Smooth Tubes

P0134 1/1 O2 Sensor Stays at Center: Neither rich or lean condition is detected from the oxygen sensor

P0151 2/1 O2 Sensor Shorted To Ground: Oxygen sensor input voltage maintained below normal operating range.

Check the sensor connectors/pins. Make sure they are clean/not damaged

One sensor is pegged in the middle, the other is reading full lean. 2 problems: The IAT could likely be reading a hotter temp than normal but that would be telling the PCM to reduce the injector pulse width which results in less fuel and possible lean condition. That could have been the case before the CE came on and caused it to go full rich. The other sensor may be bad or just has a bad connection, but with no feedback I am not sure how it would affect the PCM.

I am leaning toward replacing both O2 sensors but I am still wondering about the IAT? How do you tell if it is performing correctly? It does not seem to throw a code?

There are 4 codes the IAT can set off. For example, if you unplug it and then start the car, it will throw a code as soon as the code matures. Most likely, it is operating correctly.

Re: Belanger Headers and Chrome Smooth Tubes

I put Belangers on our car in April of 01. This was before the relocated **** solution (which later, didn't work for me). I set a light almost right away. 02 heater codes. This was a problem then because there was no good solution to fix it that summer. The PCM reverts back to a richer set up until the light is reset. When the **** relocation info came out, I tried that as well. It worked a little better, but still set the light every couple hundred miles, almost always on start up...after a few seconds of running. I tried some after market 02s, from a very well respected tuner but they were slightly longer than OEM and grounded out on the aluminum heat shields above the sensors. (modifying these little covers would fix this problem as they did seem to work before they shorted out)
Sean Roe then came out with an idea that had worked on many vehicles in the same situtation(not all). Drilling the sensing holes in the 02 sensor bigger. There is a thread on this board, with pictures if you search. This has worked for me the last 20,000+ miles. You may try drilling the 02s out. I don't believe new OEM 02s will necessarily solve your problem.

I have over 37,000 miles on my Belangers to date. I have not had any leaks or had to retighten anything since installation. I have had to add some hi-temp paint on 3 tubes on the passenger side due to the coating coming off over a few square inches.
