Hi all

I have a '94 RT/10, I changed the intake to K&N high performance filter, increased the throttle diameter, did the rockers... now 2 weeks ago I mounted Beligner Headers (they're really great, perfect fit !), I have racing Cats and in the sidepipes Borla muffler.

I really like the HP and torque raise I got, the car accelerates really faster and better in high gears, so I don't want to miss that. The sound is for my ears perfect, quite loud and deep, and there is the problem.

Here in Switzerland I can't drive long with that sound, Police will stop me, then if I come home late at night, all the neighbors will stand in their beds... and last but not least, I can't cruise with my wife anymore, you can't talk in the car...

Is there something I could do without spending again a couple of hundred bugs ? I heard about a resonator, what is that, would that be a solution for me, to reduce a bid the loud noise but to keep the gained power ?

thanks a lot for an answer.

In my opinion (specially w/ the Gen I's short side exhaust) I think you have created a "monster". You can take actions that will have some small effects on the cabin noise, but the noise flowing out of the exhaust tips is probably going to stay at the level it is now. A resonator is a straight-thru muffler which will lower your sound output, but I'm not familiar with where they would be placed in your system.

Need the Gen I experts to jump in...

I had the same situation a few months back, the drone was killing me.

I did what Bill said, switched back to stock cats. Unfortunately, your sills will get MUCH hotter with the stock ones in, but it'll definitely help with the sound.

With your Belangers & Borlas it should still sound great.

Yes, it's going to make the car louder. I've got the black flag on a trackday (road course)for too much noise since installing the belanger headers. First it was below 95 dB, now its 99 dB.

Hi

thanks for your answers... Just checked these 'Vortex Cones' in the net, they seem to be pritty cheap, are they really working ? If I could just insert them into the muffler in the sidepipe, before the last little tube to the exit, that would be great !

Who did it and how much did it reduce the noise ?

thanks

Hi Gerald

these mufflers look really good, it's a pitty it's not adjustable by wire or with a little electric installation...

Do you know if that would fit into the sidepipe too ?

Thanks

When I converted my gts to side exhaust running b&b headers, high flow cats and borlas the drone gave me headaches for days. I dropped the vortex muffler cones upstream of the borlas and it reduced all the drone, making the car much more enjoyable to drive. I have since switched back to rear exhaust and removed the cats but kept the cones to quiet things down a bit. Its probably the cheapest potential fix to your problem and probably worth a shot.

I know about the cones, and my local shop (Valaya Racing) tells me there are some sort of "spirals" you can put in to decrease noise and drone. I have T&D's, headers, free flow cats, and Borlas w/ full 3" side exhaust and that was pretty loud. I recently did heads and cam, and now it is *really* loud. It sounds great at WOT, but is too loud in mid RPM's (like 2-3k, when going through my neighborhood). I am going to try the spirals, and will post my opinions.

I drive a Gen I without cats in Austria.
Yeah, very loud.
When I'm around cops I usually shift into 6th and drive the car at low rpms. Drastically reduces the noise level.

But then again - I've got the noise and emission exceptions stamped into my car documents. So even if they pulled me over...who cares

Hi zen_garage

great ! Your message is very cool, I ordered the cones and they are on the way, I hope I'll have the same success you have, that's great !

Did you felt anything about loosing a bit power or torque ?

thanks a lot

Giuseppe
