Hi guys...I'm a newbie to the viper club and wanted to ask an opinion about a paint problem that i have on my 04 black SRT convertible. I have pitting over the surface of the car. I showed this to the dealer and he said that he would pull up the history on my car. I bought this 04 new last year with 200 miles on it. He said that they would probably repaint the car locally here in New Orleans. Would you let them repaint a new car? Will the value of my car go down since it will be repainted? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chas.

Imho i would not repaint the car, people always think there is a story behind a repaint. Black is very tough to match the color and texture. I would try to have the car buffed, and if that doesnt work possibly wet sanded and buffed. MY .02 only from experience with black, I have since moved on to silver because of this exact issue. Good luck whatever you do.

To avoid people thinking there is a story behind a repaint. You only have to take pictures of the situation and they will understand the benefit of the repaint (and they will realize that it was not to cover an accident)

If you are worried about a resale, I would get a statement from the dealer on the situation, and put it in the glove box or lock box with all your other info on the car. That way you can show the customer that there is no concern on the repaint.

True black used to be the easiest color to match. Now that there are a million near blacks it is a little different. I think the SRT-10 is real black, also if they paint the whole car that wont be a problem. Many black touch up paints say "all makes all models."

Definitely take it to a good, reputable body shop first for an opinion. Be sure that the pitting is not just in the clear coat. It may be able to be wet sanded and polished without needing a repaint.

Chas-

I wasn't aware there was another black SRT-10 in New Orleans. Who do you take the car to---Donnie at Bergeron? As far as I know he is the only viper tech in the city.

Shoot me an email [email protected] we'll get together for a beer sometime.

Could you post some photos? I've got an 05 SRT/ Black. I've got some nice wavy paint. I'll see if I can find the pictures and post them.. Seems black shows ALL the imperfections. I would be most vipers have it, but black REALLY will show ANY and ALL imperfections..

Kenny,

I would love to have a beer with you....when i get back in town we can hook up. I am a member of the VCA just had not had a chance to do anything with the whole hurricane situation and all....

I took the Viper to Ray Brandt on the Westbank for the 3k service and installed a Factory GPS. I live in English Turn so it works for me. There is a cert. viper tech his name is Jeremy....good guy knows his stuff and they are very nice and eager to work on the car.

Thanks guys for all of the posts and advice. I agree with you guys. I am going to go to a body shop and have the paint looked at. It does not look like a clear coat issue to me but more like the paint itself pitting where there is a small hole or area that has sunken. It is all over the car so the entire car would have to be repainted. If i do decide to repaint it I will get the dealer to write up the explaintion as you guys suggested.

Thanks again for all the help.

Chas.
