Im close to purchase on a viper..one of them is a 97 GTS blue/wjite with 1100 miles..Unfortunately it has a wet nos system install..Owner said its never been used and I thought yea right..Then why install it? Anyways my question is can one tell if nos has been introduced into a engine ever..Are there trace residues that could be detected easily..Should this scare me away from the car?

I think that a compression and leak down test won't hurt to start. Also do a dyno run to make sure that thing is running right. you should be able to tell by the hp and afr #'s

When I bought my car, I had this problem as well. I had him take it off but mine wasn't fully installed so I'm pretty sure it wasn't used.

The bright side on yours is you only got 1100 miles so at most that's only like....4400 quarter mile passes with NOS!

If he calls it "NOS" and installs a switch labeled "NOS", I would be scared. I've been using nitrous on various cars since 1983 ... but never NOS.

I see lots of ads, even for the older stuff, that say "Nitrous never used". RIGHT!!!

NOS is a brand name of a company that makes nitrous oxide systems. I think that is the single most irritating and damaging thing that the **** & the Furriest movies gave the motorsports world.

That car has an NX nitrous system.

Nitrous can be referred to as: nitrous, nitrous oxide, the gas, juice, the jug, the hose, spray, nuke, the [******], a system, etc.

Anyway, to answer your question, I wouldn't worry about it. The engines are extremely strong. Plus, if the car is that immaculate, everywhere else, I doubt that the owner had some half-assed installation done.

You should buy the car and spray it like it was designed to be!

If the nitrous is installed properly, the motor can handle thousands of pounds/usage.

Some say you can extend the life of a motor if a moderate
nitrous system is installed.

If you serious pay the guy for the nitrous and make a run,
Then shut down immeadiatly after the run and pull out 1 and 3 plugs. They should be clean without serious pitting(lean).

TOOOFST has hundreds of nitrous passes and the motor run perfect at 32,000.

If the guys lying about usage and changed the plugs, your sol unless you take the heads off to inspect and test for sulfer.

If the car has stock cats, that can be a problem.Must have high flow and preferably no cats.

Just saw the pics and 1000miles.Should be no issues as long as she runs strong.I like the toy copter!

I strongly suggest NOT using the nitrous unless you do it on the dyno with A/F.

adam, if ya get it, id give ya a hand with it. its simple stuff thats fun as heck.

i did a leak down test then went straight to a dyno to tune it before i ever used it.

dont sweat a nitrous car, its no biggie.

and if ya ask me, the heater is on upside down. it should be on the underside so the heat can rise.

is the car local ? lets go see it.

I have used over 30 tanks of the laughing gas, its fun and effective. NO problems so far. Car has 42.000 miles and its gets a dosage of 200 or 300 shot EVERY DAY. Compression test was perfect.
With that low mileage, I would not worry too much, so guys install it only to show off!

Some of the claims in the auction are [******]. 650hp without nitrous? $5088.40 for high flow cats? 3.55 gears for $4110.00? Car does look super clean so maybe the owner is just clueless.

Just another B/W GTS, there's plenty of them in NY/CT VCA Adam. What happened to that Blue/White RT/10 you were looking at? The low mileage is great but your a driver so you'll be putting the mileage on anyway.

What is this misconception that nitrous is bad for a motor? If it is tuned correctly and used correctly, it is a great power adder just make sure it has a window switch installed! The only thing that sux is filling the bottles all of the time. I bet I went through 20 bottles last summer and hating filling them every time, so I am going the blower route but am keeping the NX and going with a smaller shot. And why would anybody install nitrous and not use it? That is a load of crap. If you got it, use it!!

Yep, it's a common misconception that nitrous hurts an engine. I had a NX system on my previous Corvette, but when I went to sell the car I had people ask me how many times that I had used the nitrous, as if the number of times used had some accumulative negative effect on the car.
So I pulled the N2O off of the car to sell the Vette. But when I got my Viper one of the first things that I did was to adapt the NX system to the car.

The only real problems with nitrous are if you have a poor install and/or don't do dyno and A/F testing to make sure that it's not running lean. And I prefer having a window and WOT switch, so that the system is not engaged at low revs or near redline or inbetween shifts. Part of the bad rep comes from nitrous installs on small high compression engines. Teens often use too big of a shot and blow up the engine. Viper engines are overbuilt and under-stressed, so they can handle the added pressure of nitrous with no problems as long as the A/F is good.

With a compression test and clean plugs, everything should be fine. The GTS looks VERY clean and I wouldn't worry about the N2O setup at all. In fact I'd consider it a plus! :2tu:

oh, just buy the car already !

I've had a NX System on my 2000 RT/10 for 5 years. Car still runs great, no problems, I go through bottles like crazy and it's a blast on the track.
