High Pitched Whining Sound . . .

I have noticed the last few days of driving a high pitched whine (almost like a turbine-like sound) when driving the car in gear. When the clutch is depressed the sound disappears (possible transmission or differential problem?). Also, when releasing the throttle at highway speeds in addition to the usual pops from the exhaust I can also hear a hissing sound like steam escaping (it almost sounds like a blow off valve noise on some turbocharged cars). Otherwise, car performance is fine.

Any ideas? Or is this normal?

Throw out bearing? Does the clutch pedal vibrate when you put mild pressure on it?

Did you change out the filters to the K&N? They have a problem with the holes being the wrong size and you hear a whistle sound when under load. Just a thought.

If you did go the K & N route I can tell you how to get rid of the wistle sound if you email me. Also changing the K & N filters to Green Filters produces even more seat of the pants power. Guys -- thanks for the input. No, my car is bone stock so no K&Ns. I tried feeling the clutch pedal but no vibration. Actually, today temps were in the 70s whereas it was in the 50-60s yesterday when I heard the sound. The noises did not occur today but have occurred before. I will report if the problem recurs.

I can also tell you that the rear end on my car whined when it was really hot out, 85 degrees, after a long run down the highway. After changing to Royal Purple Lubricants the wining went away.

Interesting.. on my 115hp car (obviouslt not a Viper

) I have an open-air filter without any holes being the wrong size and I also hear a whistling sound when under partial load. Only other mod is an aftermarket rear muffler.

Inject, the whistling sound is common to the viper k & n unit and is solved by drilling out the vent holes to 3/8" and 1/2" respectfully. Also the throttle spacers that go between your throttle body and intake manifold tend to creat whistling at off idle. In your case you are hearing the rush of air entering your open air filter, The Sound Of Power!

I posted last week about the same sound. Mine is coming from the rear of the car - almost sounds like it is at the battery but could be anywhere in the rear. This noise first occurred after a 200 mile highway trip. Performance not affected and sound is about 90% gone now but still hear it faintly at times.
Where is the sound coming from on your car??

knuk -- a little hard to tell the location. It seems to be coming from the front part of the car near the engin/transmission housing. For example, the sound came back (although not as loud) the other day and as an experiment while driving a shifted into neutral and blipped the throttle. I could still hear the whining sound which went up and down depending on how deep I blipped the throttle. So far no impact on performance.

Stock diffs can whine after extended highway runs in warm weather when the ring and pinion aren't set up quite right or the lubricant is low or the wrong viscosity.

What usually works for me is to sway my head a few times just like a radar dish to find out where its coming from

Is the sound in either ear stronger than the other one: that's the area where it is coming from. Next go eliminate every possibility in said area :2tu:

I have a similar whine at idle coming from the rear of my 06 Viper vert. Probably at speed also but just can't hear it over the exhaust. It gets down right loud sometimes and can be heard from several feet away. Any ideas? Does the fuel pump get that loud?

Hmm, whining from the rear while in idle and not moving doesn't leave many options but a fuel pump that I could think of. Though the bottom of the car is basically a big tunnel, so it could be transmitting sound down the tunnel and out of the rear diffuser. Do you notice the whine if you have the car in gear but with the clutch in? Could be a throwout bearing just getting amplified like a trumpet through the belly pan.
