What\'s is going at the Connor Assembly plant ?!

The Connor Assembly plant is going to be shutdown in a couple of weeks for a long periode. I am currious what is going on. Is there an insider out here ?

FACTS:

1) There are a lot of Vipers in stock and a lot of them got huge discounts
2) All employees at Connor will be temporarily dismissed
3) Tooling will stay there
4) There are some test Vipers running around with large hood venting covered by a black blanket.
5) There is no 2007 Viper
6) Managers at DC will have to make an important decision before VOI 9.

I can vouch for the fact that extra cars were in stock and big discounts are around...if you know the right people...not many are gonna ever admit what type discounts are out there. I am sure no one from DC is gonna "spill the beans". Those guys and gals need their jobs!

Re: What\'s is going at the Connor Assembly plant ?!

Same thing happened when they converted from Gen 1 to Gen II. They stockpiled a whole bunch of RT/10's while they switched over to building exclusively the GTS. This polarized the ViperNation, as while many loved the GTS, many lamented the lack of a removable top, and the purest approach of the RT/10.

I would expect the stockpile to SRT Verts to be slowly metered out to those that demand a top down experience, while the Coupes will satisfy the racers, and people that like the styling of a coupe better.

Meanwhile I believe the current models will need to be modified to comply with new international regulations that require pedestrians that are run into by cars be protected better from injuries. Notice all the new cars that sport huge grills and raised hoods to offer crumple zones for pedestrian impacts.

I predict the 08 Viper will be a refreshed version of the current car, but modified front and back to freshen styling and compliance with new regulations.

Expect a new engine, with better emissions, and more restrictive noise levels. Maybe a small boost in HP and Torque, but little impact on the Viper Driving Experience.

Next Generation should be a more kick-ass styled and perhaps a bit higher performance driving experience. Many will lament the passing of the simpler, no electronic nanny's fun to drive Vipers of yore, replaced by a faster, better handling, but electronically controlled next gen.

(Only my personal opinion. Based only on generally available information.)

ROFL!! :smirk: Where do these "international" do-gooders get these laughable ideas? Unbelievable! I don't know about you, but if I'm gonna get hit by a moving two-ton mass of metal, the last thing I'm thinking is "crumple zone!" LOL!

I do welcome a modernized Viper. Although it's controversial, and many feel strongly against it, these cars have needed some kind of (defeatable) traction control for many years...

Sad to see the V10 go, if that's the case.

LOL, I guess you're one of those who doesn't want the new tech. :D

Not a problem, live and let live. I just think when every other modern (yes) supercar has electronic handling/safety net tech now, and in fact perform better for having them, it's time Viper joined the 21st century. Too many getting wrapped up in their first few weeks of ownership. Blah, blah...

Either you agree of you don't - no point going over the same ground for the umpteenth time. At any rate, it's coming to Viper, like it or not. I welcome it.

I just don't want to see the VIPER become the Corvette. they need to go back to what the VIPER originally was, a sledgehammer with a massive engine, we just need a more massive engine now...

Look man have fun in your 94 , I for one would love some of the new safety enhancements made possible with technolgy. The car will still be a sledgehammer.

Buy a C6 Z06. It looks like a Viper, is as fast as a Viper, is as rare as a Viper, cost as much as a Viper and has all those safety enhancements to make your driving experience really, really fun.

Just so DC knows, I'm sticking with the Viper. As is.

Sad, but no doubt true.

When I was growing up we were taught to look both ways before crossing streets and to hurry across when we did. At 45-years-old I still look both ways before crossing. Teaching people those things isn't an option these days. Best to change a trillion-dollar worldwide industry.

Yep, it's coming. And then we will have to wait 40 years before some auto manufacturer has the balls to build another outrageous driver's car. And then all the posers will cling to it because it's so pretty and cry about how unruly it is and how it needs all these safety features because it's just too much of a beast.

Yeah, it's so much fun driving when you don't have to drive.

Figures this would bring out a knuckle-dragger or two! :)

Listen, folks, there's nothing wrong with having your cake and eating it too. Defeatable traction control, active handling, etc., will still let you play with your handling with "foot" inputs.

EVERY modern supercar has it, except Viper. This will be a good change. (Not so sure about losing our V10, though! :( )

Modern Supercars (http://www.supercars.net/topsupercars.html)

"2002 Ferrari Enzo
2003 Porsche Carrera GT
2004 Maserati MC12
2005 Saleen S7 Twin Turbo
2005 Pagani Zonda C12 F
2004 Koenigsegg CCR
2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR SS
2006 Bugatti 16/4 Veyron
2002 Lamborghini Murcielago
2004 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren
Modern supercars are much more complicated than their predecessors. They have to meet more strict regulations yet surpass performance figures from cars built during more relaxed decades. Essential elements of a modern supercar increasingly include electronic aids such as anti-lock braking, traction control, sequential gear changes and active aerodynamics."

that's what makes the VIPER different...what's next? cupholders? oh...nevermind.

this car should have nothing in it that isn't required by law (except the massive engine)

Yet another whiney "please give me nannytech and force it on everyone else" thread. It's like every 2 months or so, the whiners who don't understand what the Viper is about, come out to play.

Like that cupholder... your beloved nannytech should be AFTERMARKET. It's available NOW if you want it on your rt. I've read many positive reviews on it. I might even consider getting it on an SRT when I buy one and leave my gts alone. Choice is good. Taxing people because of your insecurities as a driver, or your desire to "fit in" with the "supercar" clique... is NOT so good.

We may not, but I'm sure DC would love to be selling 52,000 Vipers per year.

The Corvette started off in low production number to test the market, and improved on each generation. Let’s hope DC will do the same.

There’s no 2007 Ford GT being made or any year after.

There is no such thing as "international regulations" when it comes to automobiles. Automobiles can be "homologated" to comply with standards enforced around the world.

The Viper is not an "international" car of significance, mostly sold in North America, a small portion does find it ways overseas (I'm guessing no more than 10% of production but I do not know for sure) and of those overseas, how many end up in Western Europe? Only Western Europe is planning on enforcing the pedestrian crumple zones.

Besides that, Europe has required phase_one of pedestrian crumple zones since the 05 model year:

http://www.washtimes.com/autoweekend/20040715-091853-2977r.htm

The next phase isn't due until the 2010 model year:

http://auto.ihs.com/news-06Q1/frost-pedestrian-protection.jsp

So why would an 08 Viper be "so concerned" about such modifications? It would not be a concern. Why are revising the hood? Because of the new motor..that's my guess at least -- the new motor is a reality because of nox emission regulations in effect starting in the 07 model year:

http://yosemite.epa.gov/opa/admpress.nsf/07a003f45c2973c78525701c005e2740/0b8d5154df6d30a18525684e0077437d!OpenDocument

The thinking here is that the Viper motor needs to be recalibrated to accommodate the mandatory Tier 2 EPA requirements and rumors of an 8.4 liter, there ya go.

The changes are due to new federal front impact regulations going into effect in or around 2007.

I highly doubt the Viper will lose the V10 however if it does it is even more reason to keep mine and stick a blower on it.

DO you have a link to this? This is the first I have heard of this.

Best I can tell there is no such thing as "new (USA) federal front impact regulations".

Here's a link to a recent "study" that does not include any such discussion though it would be a very good place to mention:

http://www.steel.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Home&TEMPLATE=/CM/ContentDisplay.cfm&CONTENTID=14632

Also on the NHTSA site you would think such a regulation would be mentioned:

http://nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/standards/FMVSS-Regs/index.htm

sub page:

http://nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/standards/FMVSS-Regs/pages/Part571.htm

I also looked here:

http://www.iihs.org/default.html

but nothing...

Can you provide a link please?

Thank you,

-J

p.s. here is a link to the Code of Federal Regulations Website:

I FOUND IT!

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/rulings/Anton_FRNov16.html

On December 4, 2002, the President signed into law "Anton's Law", P.L. 107- 318 (December 4, 2002; 116 Stat. 2772), which provides for the improvement of child safety devices when installed in motor vehicles. One of the provisions of Anton's Law mandates the installation of lap/shoulder belts in rear seating positions. Specifically, section 5(a) of the law directs the Secretary of Transportation, through NHTSA, to issue a final rule by December 2004 that would:

require a lap and shoulder belt assembly for each rear designated seating position in a passenger motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less, except that if the Secretary determines that installation of a lap and shoulder belt assembly is not practicable for a particular designated seating position in a particular type of passenger motor vehicle(like a Viper), the Secretary may exclude the designated seating position from the requirement

...goes into effect Sept 1 2007...whew, if it weren't for that exclusion we'd be looking at Vipers with a back seat!

-J

p.s. still can't find any federal regulation regarding impact redesign requirements for any year from now until whenever

There certainly are some new federal crash regulations going into effect in 2007. I know a big deal was made that Ferrari got an exemption for the F430 recently. Perhaps that will help your research.
