someone better delete this pic before chuck sees it.

LOL nah. Aftermarket doesn't bother me. More power to 'em. If somebody wants to add crap to their Viper then go ahead and add it. But don't add it to mine.

Re: What\'s is going at the Connor Assembly plant ?!

There certainly are some new federal crash regulations going into effect in 2007. I know a big deal was made that Ferrari got an exemption for the F430 recently. Perhaps that will help your research.

You are correct, but it has nothing to do with the exterior of the car (previous discussion was pertaining to the hood redesign).

The Ferrari exemption is regarding airbags:

http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060522/FREE/60522003&SearchID=73248254760585

snip:

The exemption applies only to provisions requiring frontal-impact airbags to be engineered so that deployments do not inadvertently injure children or small adults who are not in normal seating positions.

So what's the deal with the FGT? Supposedly the were going to stop production in 07 because of new nose regulations.

But it appears there are no new 07 regulations?

Doesn't your SRT-10 have a cupholder? Or is that a change cup??

Re: What\'s is going at the Connor Assembly plant ?!

I thought the FGT was a short-termer due to the engine redesign (emmissions) requirement and the new "smart" airbag requirement (not side impact regulations though since they don't take effect until 2011).

Those expenses plus it being merely a "halo car" sealed its fate.

I cannot find any external "crash / impact" regulations going into effect.

Here's a link about the FGT and 2007: (not much, a little info)

Re: What\'s is going at the Connor Assembly plant ?!

I just got back from the plant !

What a great tour. :2tu:

I would recommend it to anyone who has not already been there.

Anyway, stuff that you already probably know. The plant will be shut down soon and only temporarily ( a couple of months ) from what we were told. The existing stock will start being delivered to dealers shortly as well. The max. capacity of that plant is 8- 12 cars per day and they absolutely have no intention of increasing the production capacity. They made it very clear that there is a certain amount of prestige in Viper ownership and they wish it to remain that way. They even went as far a saying that we do not wish to be like the Vettes.

They dismantle 1 Viper engine per week to make certain it meets quality control standards. At a cost of circa $ 500,000.00 per year. The same detail applies to the frame and other components. They really do a detailed check on these cars and all of the parts received from suppliers must pass engineering specifications. The engineers are constantly looking at improvements engine components.

There is absolutely no technogical innovations ( assemblies ) at the plant . These cars a really built by hand. Really nice to see how muh care is placed on the assembly. Not rushed at all , but a lot of love and care taken on these cars.

They employ 98 people in total in the plant. Incredible since I thought it was a lot more. It really is a family environment.

None of the production vehicles are exposed to any elements such as sun, rain or snow until such time as they are shipped to the dealer. Even at the point of transfer to the shipping trucks they are loaded indoors.

Soon they will be starting production of the special edition vehicles for the VOI. A lot of white Viper parts laying around. They had a couple of steel gray vehicles there. What a gorgeous color.

There were 2008 productions prototype parts in sealed boxes. There was also a vehicle parked outside with a black tarp over the hood. You could clearly see a different hood on the car. I wasn;t next to that vehicle for more then 10 mins when someone came running out and rushed it away. I came very close to opening the hood even at the expense of the alarm going off. If anything it was NOT a Viper engine under that hood . It did not sound like a VIPER Engine at all. Of that I am certain.........I have pictures that I will post later. :2tu:

I wonder how much I could have gotten if I opened the hood and took a snap shot of that engine .....................Oh well !!!

The are VERY VERY VERY VERY hush hush on anything to do with the 2008 model. Any questions I asked was shunned at very clearly. He would not even tell me when they plan to announce the new generation car. But I tried !!! :2tu: :)

Crossing the border the duty office dialoge went like this.........

"where you going "

Me.................Viper Plant

" How long you going to be there?"

Me..................a couple of hours.

" Well I've only got one thing to say to you and I need a answer right away".....He scared the crap out of me? He was really serious and his voice very loud and forceful.

Me.................What ? I'm thinking holy crap!!

With a smile on his face.........." How do I get to drive your car"...........................LOL LOL LOL

I found that kinda funny. Its funny how a Viper will make anyone in any situation change.

Thats the Viper experience folks .

Patrick

PS: Before we hit the Viper plant we went to RM Car Restorations. These guys are incredible and its not uncommon to have cars there with 9000 man hours at $ 80.00 an hour.

Here are some pictures

Does anyone know what this is ????????????????? I was amazed when I found out!

Re: What\'s is going at the Connor Assembly plant ?!

Awesome report Patrick!

Maybe the new motor will have variable valve timing? And maybe they found a way to fire the cylinders one at a time (instead of Firing Order 1, 10-9, 4-3, 6-5, 8-7, 2). Or maybe they will fit in 4 valves per cylinder!

Thank you,

What DID it sound like? Think back over the sound of cars that you have heard. Which car did it sound like the most? Also, did you notice any sucking sound from the air intake area indicating that there might be a supercharger? Did you notice any difference in the appearance or location of the exhaust outlets?

Please advise.

I don't get it ...

all these gen 1 and 2 guys ******** and moaning about how and what the new
viper should be... I mean really, so you bought a used 94 rt10 in 2000 or a
blue & white 97 gts in 2005 that you claim is the supreme automobile... Wow
DC should hurry up and bend over backwards for you frickin people... Surely
they should kiss yur **** for really contributing to the bottom line.

Don't listen to us... the new viper buyers... the one's who actually contribute to the salaries of those fine craftspeople at CAAP. I for one say go ahead Dodge... Build the best most advanced Gosh dam viper you can... Make it technologically advanced... make it kick all forms of ass and take no prisoners... Make it so great that it will take the competition andther 14 years to figure out what hit em let alone catch up. :usa:

First of all , let me apologize. I do have a picture of the so called " Ghost Viper " but its at my office. The car had what appeared to be a camera mount on the dash. Obviously they don't want anyone next to this car.

I did not notice any change in the position of the exhaust outlet. Certainly a large change in the hood schematics.

Hard to say what the engine sounded like in comparison to other cars I have heard, but strangely enough it was a lot quieter then the current Viper engine. You could not hear the lifters at all.............and yes it seemed as if the engine was sucking a lot more air.

you're a tool (for you old guys that's an insult). just because some of us bought the car we wanted doesn't mean we couldn't afford a new version of the same car. if they started making VIPERs again and stopped making the not-as-good-looking GenIII corvette-looking vipers we'd get out the check books.

what we are saying is what we want and what the VIPER creaters wanted, just because we prefer the true VIPERs doesn't mean we have no money and our opinions don't count.

lets see, to sell your beloved car they have to discount the hunks to move them within a few months of release (talking about the coupe). I don't remember early RT/10's or the GTS selling for $10K or more under sticker...GenI & II are classics American icons, GenIII is not.

Nice little class envy post you got there. It really makes a guy wonder why some folks are considered snobs.

The second-hand market doesn't contribute directly to CAAP salaries, but it does contribute in every other way. For one, resale value. With the exception of a few snobs like yourself, most buyers would think twice about buying a 90K Viper if the resale on it in a couple years was half that.

But what worth is my word? I don't own a GenIII and besides, I might buy a CC before a new Viper. I guess my lowly opinion doesn't count.

So with your logic, as soon as Gen4's come out, all considerations for Gen3's should be tossed out the window... spare parts and all, because it's only the people waiting in line to buy Gen4's that matter. Your logic also indicate that people who own gen1/2 seem to have less money than you. The fact is, if a company doesn't make something worthy of buying, people won't buy it. That's not to say Gen3's are not worth buying, but there are more than a good share of people richer than you that is looking for a more compelling reason to buy a next Gen Viper... in their OPINION, the SRT's don't quite compare, and more nannytech only makes it worse.

DC won't make more money ignoring what makes the Viper a hot commodity to begin with.

Ironically, you miss your own point. If DC crams in all that nannycrap into the Viper, EVERYONE WOULD KNOW WHAT PUTS IT AHEAD OF EVERYONE ELSE. It'll take 14 months to beat, not 14 years, and cost 14 times as much. Just ask the DC idiots behind the SLR... Their numbers were tops until the porsche GT and Enzo killed their numbers before the cars were even in the owners hands. The Viper will NEVER be able to keep up with all that nonsense and still be affordable.

The magic to the Viper was that it kicked ass WITHOUT all that crap... and nobody could figure out why. The automag writers stuttered with ink trying to unravel what their gut was telling them, but their brain denied, "THIS IS A BADASS CAR." The supercar industry scratched their heads collectively as well as the Viper beat them over and over again... at a fraction of the cost. To top it all off, the looks just dropped jaws everywhere.

Yes, the SRT is a better overall car than the Gen1/2's, but that said... the Z06 is technically a better car than the SRT (minus the glued-on roof). What makes all of us, as a whole, still think the Viper is king? The answer to that question is what will put the Viper back on top, not superficial gizmos.

I just don't want to see the VIPER become the Corvette.

We may not, but I'm sure DC would love to be selling 52,000 Vipers per year.

The Corvette started off in low production number to test the market, and improved on each generation. Let’s hope DC will do the same.

There’s no 2007 Ford GT being made or any year after.

Not to be picky but 2005 C6 production numbers were 37,372

And I'm afraid the Gen IV Viper will be a Corvette w/ a V10. :(

That's what so many have loved about the Viper, bad *** car with no added fluff. Now it appears it's turning into what turned most Corvette guys to buy Vipers including myself.

What an elitist thing to say. You just flamed maybe 70% or more of all Viper owners. Not looking to make too many friends at VOI in Vegas I see. :p

Back to the question at hand. If having 650 hp in a Gen IV requires having some defeatible electronic nannies for a percieved safety benefit, I would bite. If not defeatible in factory stock form, the aftermarket will make things like the skip shift eliminator (that I personally like) to defeat the TC, etc.

Re: What\'s is going at the Connor Assembly plant ?!

1st. If I came off as a snob I apoligize... that was not my intention.
I mearly exaggerated a point to make a point... obviously you missed the point.

2nd. Snampro you're a tool. ( for you old guys I'm being nice ) after carefull consideration I purchased the car that tugged the heart strings the most. This decision had nothing to do with money. nor was this a gen vs. gen post. My car says Viper on it as does yours. Just because you feel yours is the "true viper" doesn't make it so. Theres real Viper blood in my veins... Have you checked yours lately? To follow your logic... if they kept making the same 94 viper for the past 12 years it would have been dead a long time ago. please excuse them for trying to improve the breed. At VOI. they asked you what you wanted. You replied a true convertible, better brakes and more power. Did you break out the checkbook? At another VOI they previewed the new coupe that you so desperately needed. They asked for your opinions took your input and made changes. Did you pull the trigger?

Is it their fault now that the "hunks" as you put it aren't selling? So why the hell should they listen to you or any of us for that matter. They are a car company in an ever increasing competative market. Do you blame them for trying to woo other potential buyers? You obviously never came through. Try looking at it from their perspective.

3rd. Chuck. My post had nothing to do with class envy or being snobbish. I had to re-read it 17 times to make sure. What does re-sale value have to do with anything? I wasn't thinking re-sale value when I bought my car. My neighbor bouught a brand new Maserati shortly after I bought my Viper... His re-sale value is crap as well. What's the resale value on your car? Do you care? Maybe you should blame the competion in the segment for the diminished resale value. How many people in the $100k performance car market are only looking for a weekend track car without a cup holder.

4th. Warfang. Although I agree with what you say, you missed my point. Perhaps I was just vague. Technology can be used to make a car more powerful, handle better and lighter. I don't need heated seats, cruise control or GPS. However, I do need a lighter, more powerful and grippier Viper. Furthermore, I hardly ever use my radio... for what it's worth. There is true magic and an allure to the Viper that is difficult to explain... that's why I was hooked and never looked back.

As I said earlier. My post was not an attack on the purists among us, the different gens of Vipers or anybody's financial condition. I don't believe I was being an elitist in any way. Unlike Snampro, I love all things Viper. My only wish is to see that Viper regains it's status as king of the hill and not fall to the wayside. I hope this clears things up. DC has been challenged will they step up?

Sorry for the long post.

Re: What\'s is going at the Connor Assembly plant ?!

I guess all of us are wrong. Kaval is not a snob.

Now that that's cleared up I need to buy a SRT so I can make suggestions about the SRT.

And I need to buy a SRT coupe, so I can make suggestions about the SRT coupe.

And I need to buy a CC, so I can make suggestions about the CC.

And I then I'll buy them all over again in 2008. Don't wanna miss out on my right to give my opinion.

If you look back over the 14 years, three generations, and at the many different special additions. I think Dodge has done a hell of a job at trying to give everybody what they want.

I hope to be driving these Vipers the rest of my life. Lets hope they never stop trying to please us all.

Very interesting. If they were going to offer, or were considering offering, a supercharged engine of some type from the factory, whether it be for the Firepower or otherwise, ( I had heard that a supercharged version of the current 425 HP hemi was planned quite a while ago - not from an official source ) it is likely that it would have a somewhat different valve setup.

Remember that email that Sean Roe accidently got and told us about last year? I wonder if that email was referring to an earlier version of the same engine.

Conner will shut down for a little over 4 months starting Sept 1st.

2008 SRT-10 production will start in early January 2007 and run until the summer of 2008.

Engine will be a 8.4L w/6-speed manual trans.

2008 models will not be Gen IV, but will have exterior cosmetic changes. Features and options will be almost identical to 2006 models. Same audio system, wheel sizes, side exhaust, 3.07 gears etc.

Gen IV "ZC" production will start in January 2009 (roadster) and July 2009 (coupe).

Firepower coupe is set to start production July '08, Firepower roadster January '09.
