California registration DMV

Purchased a 1995 RT/10 in Oregon, I live in California. My Viper had only 4700 miles on it, thought I had found a one of a kind. Shipped it to California and had it smogged and went down to register it in California. Bad News, I was informed that the car had LESS that 7500 miles on it and I could not bring it into California. I only choice was to immediately take it out of the State and I could never bring it back in due to the registration showing the milage I purchased it at. Has anyone ran into this problem and is their a solution?

I sure don't want to sell the car, must be a way to satisfy California rules, or lobby to change.

If you take it to a smog ref and have the whole smogging process done over again, they will let it into Kalifornica.

If the car was certified for FEDERAL emissions and not CALIF(when originally sold), then it must have 7,500 miles on the clock to bring it in as a used car. Look at the emissions sticker to see which cert applies. If it says certified for CALIF, then you can bring it here now.

Why cant you just put some miles on it and then register it?

Tough situation, and it has lost us a ton of Sales in California. It will be difficult and I would try Ulysses's idea first , but you may have to look to alternatives. We have had numerous low mileage Snakes that buyers in California wanted to purchase, but we had to inform them of the rules. From 99 on, all Snakes were 50 State Certified , but prior to that it was seperate. Good luck , and sorry to hear of your predicament.

That car met CA regs - they only made one Viper...it was legal in all 50 states. Only the ones shipped to CA had the CA sticker. The CA sticked was obtainable from Dodge at one time. I had mine registered in CA in 1995, it met the air regs with no problem.

Yes, it is a bunch of hooey. And to make it worse, most people working at the DMV don't know the regs petaining to this and they might give you a hard time. Getting the smog ref to approve usually doesn't cause any hassle because he works for the BAR and his word is gold. They almost always pass a car that the smog ref says is okay.

This has happened to many and the solution is pretty simple go to your local informed dealership and they will sell you the cert sticker for about $15.00. DMV should know this but they are not immune from having uninformed employees. The car is 100% legal for CA except the sticker was not available for the car at the time.

Funny, My California Smog Check Inspection Manual says (section 8.6) "3 years old and less then 7,500 miles on the odometer and passes visual inspection" Last time I checked 1995 is more than 3 years old! Some one at the DMV needs to learn to read!

All domestic Viper are made the same and logically meet the same emission standards. There is no mileage or age requirements, only a CA emissions sticker available from a Dodge dealer. This was covered, in detail, years ago here.

2004 has a 50 state sticker

IT IS ALL IN THE STICKER, any car any time any mileage, replace the sticker, that is as far as they look.

It is a bunch on nonsense - I got hit with that 'law' many times during the 13 years I lived there. And I sure got tired of my neighbor (A fire chief) asking me why I ran Missouri tags on some of my cars.

If it can be f'ed up, leave it to California to find a way.

I wouldn't count on it, the 7500 mile rule isn't all about emissions per se; the PRK wants to prevent their citizens from going out of state for cheaper new cars.

Johann is right - It isn't really an emissions thing ... It's a revenue thing. That always seemed ironic to me since I was TRYING to pay CA state sales tax on the vehicles, and they were telling me that I had to remove them from the state. Okay ... That makes sense!
