was the frame still an issue in 2000? I don't think the head gaskets were an issue then. that's the only thing I can think of...

maybe you should replace "upgrade to GenII" with "sell-out" :D

No head gasket issues on 2000, frame recall was in effect, no big deal unless you are hammering it on the track and easily done by any competent welder. ABS is not an issue either unless you are seriously tracking the car. Also depends on color you want. If you want black you are gonna have tke a 99-2000, sapphire and yellow in later years, and so forth. Check the registry here for color choices each year.

Some early '00 cars had a cylinder sleeve issue if I remember right which you would want to watch out for.

Correct. The first 200 or so cars built in the '00 model year had this issue (mine did - the engine was rebuilt by Arrow under warranty). It seems that many of them were black. Check the build date on the sticker on your driver's door. If it's after mid to late November the car should be fine.

The majority were black? Gimme a break, obviously I own one so I'm a little concerned about your broadsweeping, totally without reference observation. What basis do you have for that? Post it here and you put something in the mind of every reader that may stick for years, thereby hurting resale. You probably are remembering Chris Marshall's telling of the story of his car with this. And yes his car was black.
Now for some actual facts... Having had an unfortunate encounter with a wayward Ford F450 Crewcab in April I went on a search from hell to replace the car. I can without hesitation tell you that most black cars were built in June. My original, my replacement and EVERONE of the other 20 or 25 cars I dredged up were built in June. So there were a few built in the very narrow window prior to the OCTOBER cutoff of this particular problem, and Chris's was one, but seriously I don't think I've ever seen a more unsubstantiated "RECOLLECTION" posted here.

Ouch! You're right - the statement is unfounded in that I have not seen nearly a large enough sample of cars with the cylinder sleeve issue to make such a statement. However, in addition to mine I have heard of three others that were black that had the same issue. Granted, this is certainly not a big enough sampling to extrapolate to the total number of cars with this issue that may have been of any color, but of the ones I've heard about with the cylinder sleeve issue, this is at least 40%. Perhaps, I was more sensitive of the black cars with this issue since my GTS is black as well. The assumption I posted was based on understanding that the colors are run in batches. I apologize if this assumption is not correct.

However, you may have misread what I said or it misconveyed the point, as you quoted me as saying "the majority were black" when in fact the statement was "it seems that many of them were black". I never meant to convey that the majority of these 200 or so cars were black, so again, I apologize if this is how my statement came across, but that your response was somewhat of an overreaction.

ABS has saved my viper from a crash already once on the street since ownership over the past year. Had I been in a non-abs viper I would have likely locked up the brakes resulting in a front end collision. As noted, ABS is a great safety feature to have and it's also a nice feature for the track....

I have the same story, except it wasn't ABS, it was me. I realized I was in trouble (locked all four wheels), released the brake pressure and drove through the corner. I had a great feeling: "I stayed cool, calm and regained control of the car, I did it" That was a better feeling than what I got from my corvette: "wow, this car just saved my ass" I think its the old give a man a fish, teach a man to fish thing...

I saw a segment on MotorTrend TV that said there has been no proof that ABS reduces accidents. The real benefit of ABS is that it allows you to still steer the car when applying full brakes, so you maintain the ability to manuever, which any good driver can do on his/her own without ABS. The big problem is most people, when afraid of hitting something, simply slam the brakes and target fixate, never trying to steer away.

Oh, and Sapphire Blue is a great color, especially with silver stripes...
