Since you won't get anywhere pressing charges and you obviously can't trust him in your home, he's gotta go.
With his thinking that was OK, what else is in store for you!

Well if you read what i put then you would have seen i said, we would THINK about it but most wouldn't do it :bonker: ! The Corps isn't a "feel-good lets make excuses for criminals" BUT i dont think you should just give someone the max punishment for a first offense. yah its screwed up what his brother in-law did and he should be really pissed, and i suggested just like i did before, if you didn't see in my last post, that i'd give him an ass chewing of a lifetime and kick his ass out of the house.I just wouldnt call the cops and screw him over that way, maybe thats just me but thats a little over the top IN MY OPINION!
So like i was saying i'd deal with it in house like we do in the Marine Corps and not go the other route with the cops because its his brother in-law. So Hows that "FEEL GOOD" attitude??
With the exception of an over-zealous retired cop, nobody said to file charges, but I think most would agree he needs to be thrown out. This in NOT a forgivable first offense... it's not like he played ball in the house and broke the tv. There's no mistaken the Viper is the guy's pride and joy and the fact he took it shows contempt of the guy providing the free rent.

My only issue was that it seemed you were justifying his actions by saying that we all would have thought and done the same thing. Thinking of doing bad/dumb things is natural... acting on it is not.

That aside, sempfi... Happy 4th! :2tu: :usa:

Well I had a very similar situation happen to me. I was lucky enough to catch my brother-in-law sitting in my Viper and about to pull it out of the garage. When he saw me he about sh**.

He tried to blow a bunch of smoke about he was going to have it cleaned for me. After I removed him for the car and ripped his *** up, he left. My wife found out about it and left him a very nasty message and I have not seen that guy in over a year!!

Dude its just a damn car...lol. Some of you people are ridiculous. You act like none of yall have ever snuck in the garage at night and "borrowed" your old mans bad ass car. Sure a brother in law is a little diffrent. Still family no less. I think you need to relax. My brother has run off with my damn lambo in the middle of the night and i didnt flip (05 merci). I assure you your brother in law had the respect not to dick up your car. You guys crack me up...

Well, you sound like a man that can afford to lose a Viper or two. Although I can respect that (and plan on being that myself), it puts you in the league of someone who probably wouldn't understand. That's ok... I don't know what it's like to use curreny as toilet paper either. :D

Big difference between being 16, sneaking your dad's mustang out for a cruise to impress the chicks, and freeloafing as an adult and taking the benefactor's hard earned prize car without permission. If the guy is 16... not much you can do about it. Somehow I think he's older than that.

I have to disagree heavily with that statement. First I never took my parents car without asking in the first place. Maybe it was just how I was brought up but I never would even think of it as I would receive the beating of my life. Now that this is out of the way.

A Viper is not just a car. Granted, to some people it is because of their financial status, but to all it should be a 450 HP horsepower machine. He could be the best driver in the world but what if he crashed the car? If this happened then the OWNERS insurance has to pay it and then his insurance goes up. What is someone got hurt because of the driver, etc. etc. etc. These things are not necessarily in the fore-front when people think about "borrowing" a car, but this is realistically what could happen.

F355, Ive been busted the few times i made my attempts to use pops car. Yes i recieved many beatings..lol. I never said anything about his driving ability. I simply said im sure he respected the car. Meaning i doubt he went out and did donuts and cool [******] like that. Im sure he just went to cruise and pick up a stripper or 2. Or at least thats what id have done, well maybe i would have got the strippers then did donuts... :headbang: Good luck with your ride man, if you kick the guy out i could use a rebelious shop apprentice over here. :D

Lots of Marines here. Actually, I was Army, but much of my training was with you guys with the funny "stop sign" hats. ;)

Even though you're in the minority here, I can see how you would feel the way you do. Doesn't change the fact that the guy has a lot to account for when Bat gets home.

My keys are in my safe when I'm not driving it. The safe, BTW, is also very good to drop on people while they're sleeping if they decide to do something to my car.

Batboy, maybe you should show your brother-in-law this thread so he can see what an a** he was in taking your car. Then you should smash his head in the keyboard a couple of times just for me.

I think I read most of the posts, but maybe I missed it...what was the perps reaction when confronted? Was he being an obnoxious ass, contrite, indignant, defiant, sincerely regretful or what? If he's been "a pretty good guy" up until then I'd like to know how he responded. When someone encroaches on my turf how they respond when confronted determines how I re-respond. Just curious.

Sorry I haven't posted. I was outta town when this happened and my internet access was very limited. Some very good ideas here and some *cough* a little over the top.

I just got back today and here's what I know. Yes, he took the car as I have pictures of him with it. No, he didn't get caught by the police with it, but they did have a chat with him. In fact, since Monday he has been sitting in jail. The charge was "unauthorized use of motor vehicle" as someone stated. Here's where it gets interesting. He was also charged with driving on a suspended license. That was surprise #1. Surprise #2 is he apparently also has warrants in other states. Classy guy.

I checked out the Viper and there are no signs of wear. That's good. I'm visiting the dude tonight and we're going to have a little chat. Most likely I will drop my charges, but it seems he has other issues to deal. If and when he gets out he will be looking for a new place to live.

As for my wife, she knew nothing. In fact, she has warned me from day one not to trust him, but I needed proof before I just don't trust a family member. Maybe I'm naive, but I like to give the benefit of the doubt. Now I know I won't make the same mistake twice. In fact, I plan to change the locks, alarm codes, etc.

This one will have a happy ending considering it could have been a lot worse. In all, I chalk it up to a rough way of finding out the truth.

Oh one more thing. The biggest problem I had with this whole thing was him lying to me. We called him twice and asked if he had the car to which he repeatedly said no. We even caught him in one lie and he continued to weave that web. That really burned me. It showed me he would take a lie to the n'th degree if he thought he could get away with it. And now it makes me think... "what else has he lied to me about?"

It's just a really bad situation that I'm sure will pass. I pray it doesn't happen to anyone else. Hearing those dreaded words "your car is missing" just tore me up. Let the healing begin.

You did the right thing, and he deserves where he is now. Still gotta have some love for him though, just because he's family, but change your locks anyways. :)

btw- we're glad your wife isn't looney :D
