Right now my Viper is on my normal insurance policy with my other vehicles, but my carrier doesn't do agreed value policies, so it can't stay there. I was wondering for any of you whose insurance companies are like mine, whom do you use to insure your Viper? Not asking what you pay (none of my business), but wondering also what mileage or other restrictions you have in place through your policy. So far, the companies I've looked at are:

Leland West

Hagerty

Voyager

Grundy

Anyone have good or bad to say about the above?

Thanks guys!

I have Grundy - No mileage limits - $50,000 AGV, $250 deduct (i think), and it's about $750 a year. Before that I was under my Geico policy for about $1100 a year.

I have Progressive. They are good and just as cheap.
Had my everyday driver (Tacoma) with them and the Viper is actually cheaper.
For me, it was no choice, as I could not find anyone else who would insure on a foreign drivers license.

Allstate, but I want to change to something cheaper. I pay about $150/month on my viper alone!

with my DUI in 2001 & 1 ticket for "following too close" i was quoted 357 a month from AIG, the least expensive of several carriers for my area. I changed "address of storage" to up north 4 hours in the boonies and the price dropped to 157 a month. I guess Zip code means more then anything.

I have Nationwide, but I may have to call Grundy to see about getting a deal like the guy in the below post is getting. I pay $500 every 6 months, unlimited mileage(not important to me because I only drive it on weekends), guaranteed retail value(what I would pay for a '97 B/W GTS from a dealer), and a whopping $1K deductible. I'm married, 32, and also have 2 other vehicles, as well as my house, covered with Nationwide.

I have Grundy - No mileage limits - $50,000 AGV, $250 deduct (i think), and it's about $750 a year. Before that I was under my Geico policy for about $1100 a year.

Mine is through Safeco. They take into consideration my credit rating, which I try to keep immaculate. 100/250/100 with a $500 deductible for around $380 every 6 months as a second car.

If you don't mind, let me inject a post from an insurance company standpoint.....yes, I work for one.

First, if you're going to get a "specialty" or "collector" policy, you must read it very carefully. They are great to have, but the policy tends to be restrictive. It may say something like you will not get coverage if you drive the car to work. They mean it. Don't drive it to work. Remember, with these specialty policies, they're only charging $300,$400 or $500 per year and risking $100,000 or much more in return. So they'll be very restrictive in the risks they allow for. That's why with this Viper, at the moment, I have it insured with State Farm. It's a "standard" auto policy, which allows me to drive the car anywhere at any time. I've had collector policies in the past, and love them. They're terrific bargains. But I didn't want the restrictions that they have. Shop around. Get the best quote, and READ THE POLICY CAREFULLY!

There are several specialty companies out there. kcobean listed many of them. There's also Great American, American Collectors, and some others you can probably do a search on.

Also, be completely honest in your application. KepRight, purely as advise, if that's where you told the insurance company your car is garaged, please make sure that's exactly where it is garaged nightly. Unfortunately, there are lots of people who say they live or garage their car in a boonie or suburb to save money, but actually live and/or park the car somewhere else. That's insurance fraud. Insurance companies can and will deny a claim for that. Trust me on that...I spent several years as an insurance fraud investigator and I did many of these cases. Again, I have no knowledge of your situation KepRight, so don't take it the wrong way, I'm just giving advise because I'd hate to see anyone in a bad position.

If anyone has questions about how insurance companies work or general policies, I'm happy to help.

Steve,

Are there any companies that cover track time or drag racing events? I'm sure that your "on your own" with standard auto policies if something happens. I have USAA and Safeco for autos and Collectors Insurance for a firearms collection but I believe they will do auto collections as well.

I pay double the quoted online rate from Grundy. I currently have three vehicles with Geico. I am calling Grundy today and will report the results back here.

Thanks for all the responses guys. It sounds like Grundy, Hagerty and State Farm are good places to start.

ViperJon, I'm looking forward to the results of your conversation with Grundy.

cyaford, something about your post sent up a red-flag for me. Your "guaranteed retail value" sounds like "guaranteed book value" to me. How does your insurance company determine what you'd pay for a 97 GTS at a dealer? If they're using NADA or KBB, you'd take a bath. Just thought I'd ask, 'cause that one sounds like heart-ache waiting to happen.

My $63/mo ($380 every 6 mo) rate through Safeco didn't interest you?

I had State Farm before the Viper for both my cars and house. They angered me when they canceled my homeowner's insurance after two payable claims over a 20 year period. I vowed to change auto insurance as well, even if it meant paying higher premiums with another company. I ended up going with Safeco and saved over $600/yr as a result. I sent a thank you letter to the State Farm headquarters in Bloomington, IL.

Nope, thanks though. I'm buying insurance not applying for credit. I don't want any company I'm not applying for credit with to pull my history. Just the act of having your credit checked can lower your score. That few points takes a long time to earn back.

Man I need to switch to Grundy or Hagerty, I thought $113 per month through State Farm was cheap, but apparently I can get it cheaper and covered more.

Progressive for $900 1 yr full coverage (Just hope I never have to submit a claim!)

Good luck with Progressive - I had one claim with them after several years (not my fault) and my car, boat, and house insurance all doubled. But I just got a letter in the mail last week about a class action lawsuit against Progressive for insurance fraud/overcharging clients - they deserve it and I hope I see some $$$. With AAA now and very happy.

CANTDRIVE55,
I've heard rumors that there are policies out there for that, where you buy coverage for the day, but I haven't seen it. I'd imagine it's highly restrictive in what it pays for and is probably expensive. Racing is not a winning proposition for an insurance company, so most wouldn't do it.

Remember, when you guys are quoting the prices you get, it has a lot to do with your driving record, age, location, other members in your household, other cars on the policy, etc....so others won't get the same price you do. Best bet is to shop around and see who gives you the best price. Again, read the policy carefully. Most of the collector car companies do not allow driving to work. Check the American Collectors policy or Hagerty.

Just a thought here....In New Jersey, one of the best insurance companies you can get is called New Jersey Manufacturers. They only insure low risk drivers (no tickets) who have stable jobs. Find out if they have any low risk driver insurance companies in VA. Generally you can save about 10% over the national companies. Not a whopping amount, but if you have multiple cars, it is not insignificant. Lots of times these companies are touted to state workers. If you know anyone employed by the state of VA, ask them. It may pay off.
