While her life began several years earlier, Mistress’s true story begins on July 19, 2002 when a young couple from the Richmond VA area rented her for their wedding. A faulty gas pump and ultra hot exhaust lead to an unhappy ending:

Fueling Fire Thread

vipergasstationfire.jpg

I was in negotiations to buy MadMaxx’s 96 White/Blue RT when he decided not to sell at the last minute. I reinvested my assets and returned to the market. That’s when I came across the above post and immediately recognized the car. Like a first kiss you never, ever forget the very first GTS you laid eyes on. I made a hot call to the owner (Zoomie) to see if he was alright (mentally and physically.) He told me the horrible story you see above and made slight mention that MD law prevented him from using the car as a rental once it’s been totaled I didn’t think much about at the time, but a few months later I talked with him again. Turns out the body repair guy maximized the damage in a vain attempt to sweep the car up for himself and the insurance company totaled the vehicle. With no money to keep a second car and no ability to legally use it, the GTS was put on the market. He ended up with two buyers – one who wanted to part it out, the other who wanted to restore it. He decided to go with the lower offer that kept the car on the road.

As such on a very wintery, icy night in February the wife and I drove out to MD and drove the new baby home:

Mistress Is Home Thread

When I got home the repairs began almost immediately with a call to JonB. Jon was the first and most used vendor during this entire project and I have to give him due credit for being there to help through the more difficult issues I’ve had.

Hundreds of man hours and thousands of dollars later here is the end result:

Before it’s said, my intention was not to copy a GT2, unfortunately it’s my favorite colour combo and there really isn’t much of a way to get around it. Other than the gas cap and exhaust, every single piece used is either OEM or an OEM replica.

There are tons of pictures to post and dozens of people whom I need to thank for their help. Once I’m sure I haven’t accidentally left anyone out I’ll post again.

Thanks for the picture. I see you changed the interior to black. It was killing me to not see the end result. POST MORE!! Ever since I saw that car last month on the truck, I have been glued to the story. LOOKS GOOD!

By the way, if you do not mind me asking, what did it cost to build this. PM me.

I see you changed the interior to black.
I actually changed the interior to Cognac. One of the interest side-blurbs of this story is, according to the grease-mark dates, the RT that died and donated the interior was born about a week before Mistress. So I'm hoping there's little chance of rejection...

By the way, if you do not mind me asking, what did it cost to build this.
Total build cost hasn't be established yet - I still have some minor work that needs tweaking. I have just over $20,000 in major parts like wheels, exhaust, and paint.

Looks great-- Where did you get the front splitter and how hard was it to install?
The front and side splitters are Colin Herd Replicas. I have another set for sale here in the US for $850. Its not a solid piece of CF which keeps cost down and allows for more confidence over speed bumps. There are no pre-drilled holes so you have to decided where and how they attach. I bolted mine on with little sheet metal screws and a scrap piece of aluminum, but I had the luxury of having the body off when I did it.

I always thought you bought it after the fire, but rebuilt it just like a normal red GTS and that it was the one in your avatar? When did it become white/blue?
My old avatar (I say that because I have a change request pending) was me the day I signed the title. It was demolished at that point, but my fat posterior concealed the damage. If you look hard there is a towel covering up the part of the passenger seat that is missing, the pillar behind my right shoulder is blistered, and the sill by my right knee is still ashy.

Looks great! I've been thinking about turning my red gts into a gt2 "clone"... like you, I've always liked that color combo.

Now... you ARE keeping it right? Your post title almost read like it's been sold.

Yes I plan to keep her forever. The title is in reference to the rebuild project. There are no more major repairs to be done. I have some interior peices, maintanence peices, and an annoying HP loss issue to sort out, but otherwise she is pretty much done - exactly as I wanted her to look.

A little, but I could tell at VIR she wasn't keeping up with the pack. I was hoping with the mods I'd be walking SRTs, but a stock RT ate me alive in the long straights. Along the back strech I revved out and was forced to shift into 5th - as far as I know something none of the other cars had to do.

I LOVE the white with blue, almost as much as my silver with blue.
Car looks beautiful, good luck with her.

Bonk,

I gotta hand it to you the car looks great now! :2tu:

I saw the car in it's cherry state when Zoomie had it, and even when it was burnt in Carlisle.

This year you pulled in right after us, and I told my wife oh shi$ we have a GT2 clone here. Have yet to see one in person. I would not have known the difference other than the cognac interior, plus I am no expert on the GT2 cars.

It is nice to see the car come alive and the new paint looks well done. Your story from buying this car, rebuilding this car and winning the comp coupe is cool! Congrats!

The rest of the story...

What ever happened to the young couple that rented the gts for their wedding? Are they still together? Quite foreboding having a car burn up during your special day. :D

I’m still working on the pictures so please bear with me for a little while longer. Some others have posted pics from the Crab Feast, Carlisle, and VIR if you’d like to look them over ahead of time.

My Thank You! list is as follows:

First and foremost I have to thank Brian Dobson of Auto Elite Collision Center in Virginia Beach VA. After receiving quotes in the better part of the $10,000 spectrum Brian offered to take my car on as a special project for considerably less. Spending time away from his wife and kids to work on my car, he dedicated part of his shop and three months of his time to make my baby look stunning. The paint work was a complete body-off job including some serious body-work around the quarters and side-sills. The colours chosen were 1998 Stone White and 1996 Viper Cobalt blue with blue tint. Brian molded in the canards and wing, and also properly aligned the hood and doors.
Paint, Body Repair, Weather Strip Install, Body Repair, Splitter Install, Wing and Canard Molding, Intake and Valve Cover Powder Coating.

Next in line is Paul from Don Scharf Auto. Paul has gone out of his way to provide me with OEM stock parts and replacement components. Without his yard it would have taken months to get the pieces needed to get through inspection, let alone into the condition she is today. Also I have to give him special thanks for keeping me in mind when a complete set of ACR wheels arrived in his shop for a reasonable price.
ACR Wheels, Rear Taillight, Reverse Light, Wheel Wells, Carpets, Various Interior Pieces, Door Stanchions, Taillight Surround, Bumper Cover, and Various Exterior Pieces.

The next person I have to thank is none other than Sean at Roe Racing. He has been the go-to guy for majority of my performance parts and upgrades. Though he’s obviously a very busy person, he has always answered my emails and phone calls in quick order.
B&amp;B Exhaust, HiFlo Cats, Fire Extinguisher, VEC2, Harland Sharp Roller Rockers, Hardened Pushrods, Roe Wrap, Power Steering Cap.

Of course big props go to the Viper Wizard – Chuck Tator of Tator’s Dodge. Chuck has supplied me with many of the new parts needed and also has been a great source of information and friendship from within the club. Chuck was also the first and only dealership ever to work on my car.
Weather Stripping, Tune-up Component purchase. Red Coolant Flush, Engine Alignment, 180d Thermostat, Roller Rocker, Header, Cats, Valve Cover, and Intake Install.
<font color="blue">www.tatorsdodge.com</font>

Another tuner I have to give a nod to is our region’s home-grown favorite Jason Heffner of Heffner’s Performance. Being one of the best local viper techs Jason was the first one to evaluate and prep Mistress when I first got her. He was working out of a tiny, slummy looking industrial park outside of Baltimore and I had chills when I arrived to his shop for the first time. That all evaporated after he looked the car over and started explained what he was seeing. His obvious insight and, what can only be described as borderline obsessive compulsive, attention to detail truly set him apart from any mechanic I ever met. He was a true loss to the region and I’m sure Florida is greatly appreciating his company.
Tires, Alignment, Dyno Pull and Tune.

Next in line is Scott at X2 Builders. I had been in occasional contact with the team at X2 for various viper parts and pieces but the real gem in our professional relationship appeared near the end of my build. Scott contacted me with an offer for a complete, year matching cognac interior. After payment the parts arrived very quickly and in good order, a definite bargain in my book.

I have to give a really BIG thanks to John Archer of Archer racing. Not only for providing me with the necessary parts for my weekend at VIR but for also being an awesome mediator for the sale of the Comp Coupe. Without John’s help the sale would not have happened the way it did and things could have been very different today.

I also have several VCA members to acknowledge:
- Ron (<font color="blue">venomblue550</font>) at R&amp;J Distribution provided me with several very hard to find interior parts. (<font color="blue">www.randjdistributing.com</font> )
- Colin Herd (<font color="blue">VIPER COLIN UK</font>) for the wonderful GT2 splitters and canard replicas.
(<font color="blue">www.miniviper.com</font>)IPER COLIN UK)
- Tom (<font color="blue">Tom, F&amp;L GoR</font>) provided me with what I consider the most valuable brake upgrade ever, his 40mm conversion.
- Dave (<font color="blue">Poolfanatic</font>) for his connection to a sweet deal on some Eradispeed Rotors
- Tony from Austin (don’t know his screen ID) for the great deal on the GT2 wing.
- Joseph Dell (<font color="blue">Joseph Dell</font>) for sale of the VEC2
- Luke (<font color="blue">Luke@tirerack</font>) for helping me out years ago with my first PS purchase (way back when they were $180/ea) (<font color="blue">www.tirerack.com</font>)

and of course

- Mark (<font color="blue">Zoomie</font>) for losing a chunk of money by selling me the car because he knew I would fight like hell to make her right. Which I hope I have. (<font color="blue">www.viperrent.com</font>)

I have a feeling I’ve forgotten a couple of people, but as you can see this is quite a list to keep straight. The one person I have left to thank has probably seen the minimum of my business, though without a doubt I would never have gotten as far as I have without his advice and assistance. Despite his gruff nature I have always, and will always be a loyal customer; thanks yet again JonB of Partsrack!
EBCs, Car Covers, Various Interior Components, Tune-up Components, Teamtech Harness and hooks, Colour Matching Trailer Tie Downs.
<font color="blue">www.partsrack.com</font>

Again I sincerely apologize for anyone I may have missed. As I clean my scrapbook and look through my receipts I may have to add a few names here and there. Without the VCA and the people above my dream of owning a viper may never had happened.
