Can you charge the battery using the + post under the hood....

As long as you ground it? Seems easier than going into the trunk. Surprised I couldn;t find anything doing a search.

You absolutely can charge from under the hood. As a matter of fact, I even have my battery tender hooked up in front rather than in the back.

Pull the cover off of the fuze box there and you can see where some other connectors terminate there. remove the nut and attach your positive wire. There is a chassis ground stud under the box to attach the negative to.

A good description is given in the owner's manual. I know because I recently had to jump my '05 that had sat a little too long in my garage.
