If you're just looking for a car to haul ass around town and have fun in, just look at what all the dual owners are saying. I think it stands at 6-0 GT in this thread? They'd know best.

I'm pretty sure none of the GT owners have an 08 Viper, so that would seem to remain to be seen.

I'm pretty sure none of the guys that own both prefer the GT simply because it's the faster car, and I'd imagine the reasoning will carry over when the Viper ends up quicker than the GT. Just like there's a reason people still prefer the SRT-10 or GTS to the C6Z, even though the C6Z is significantly faster than both of those cars(edit to note I'm not trying start some C6Z/SRT speed argument, just pointing out there is more to a car than raw numbers! I think the 08 Viper is going to be great).

I'll chime in here and confirm what everyone knows; that they are both great cars. My '06 FE Coupe has a Paxton and makes close to 640hp at the rear wheels. I dare say that in a dash from 40-140 mph my Viper would take my stock GT. However, put a pulley and tune in the GT and it would out accelerate my supercharged Viper.

I enjoy both cars and the fellowship with both owners groups are similar and great. There is an amazing crossover between Viper and GT owners. Lots of GT guys own Vipers and love 'em both. True car guy passion in both groups. That said, both cars are pretty different. The numbers don't tell the whole story with either car. Until one has actually spent some time with both cars it would be premature to judge either.

Push comes to shove, if I was forced to choose, I would go with the GT. I like the styling, exclusivity, and the racing heritage. GT40/GT...the name makes no difference to me, they both share Ford's oval on the front. To suggest they don't share the same heritage is just wrong. Porsche has won Lemans many times, never with the same car from one decade to the next. To suggest that the modern (un-raced) Cayman or 997 Turbo does not share Porsche's racing heritage would be similarly incorrect.

Gallardo is beautiful but with all wheel drive and a high revving engine, it gets boring quick according to Big Carrot.

No torque and no rear wheels pushing the fun.

If you liked the way the big torque felt in the Viper, you will not enjoy the Gallardo as much once the shine of owning a Lambo wears off...

I 2nd all of that...and have had a Gallardo.

Have had more Vipers than I can count..since '92. Have FGT's. Either or... go with the GT.....but they really compliment each other well!!

The center mount engine give the GT an advantage in handeling

Actually the Viper is better balanced with a 49/51 weight distribution vs. the GT’s 43/57. It also produces higher lateral acceleration figures.

wormdoggy, I just notice that you already have a Viper. Why not add the GT to the collection!

If you perfer a coupe, the Ford GT, if a convertible, the '08 Viper.....

I don't even look at coupes, but that is simply my preference.

The Viper has been a dream for me for MANY years, but I also loved the styling of the GT40, and the Ford GT is a beautiful modernization of that 60's racecar into a supercar. If I had the money, I would be very tempted to buy a Ford GT, and have the GT-X modification to make it into a roadster (I prefer open high performance cars).

But the '08 Viper will be an amazing car as well, and $50K+ cheaper.
I'd say that the Ford GT would be the better "investment" because it's production has stopped, but that's not why most people buy cars that they want to enjoy regularly anyway.

It would be different if I were rich, or if the cars cost the same, but for my money I'd buy the new Viper.

As an owner of a creampuff GTS and a FGT I will post here what I tell everyone who asks (and EVERYONE asks)...

I don't plan on ever selling my Viper (for sentimental reasons) but if I had to sell one or the other, I'd keep the GT.

Very true and very well put!!! :2tu: I enjoyed reading that post. However, Porsche has been building cars alongside race cars year after year, non-stop. I guess I’m a track freak and I see everything in black and white checkers. Race cars earn their stripes at the race track. A racehorse’s offspring is not guaranteed a spot at the Breeders Cup just because of its DNA, it must prove it belongs. The Viper successfully competes with the best of them year in and year out in various racing leagues. Bulletproof!!!!

Thank you Dodge for the awesome improvements. And please slap an “ACR” badge to that Mopar concept and build that monster!!!! :headbang:

Part of the joy of owning a car like the Viper is the time spent in investment hours learning about the car. I have a lot of learning hours in the Viper. I have also made a lot of friends in this community . There is no way I would ever just throw that away. Whether the GT will be an extention to my current Viper ownership will remain to be seen.

I did, however, make a trip to a Ford dealership today . I finally got a chance to sit in one and it damn feels nice...........I would love to take that car for a spin.

Love the two perspectives on this debate.

Here's what our fellow car enthusiasts are saying on the GT forum.

I really enjoy my Gen II and Gen III vipers but my Ford GT is special.
I love the style as I did the GT40 and it still holds up 40 years later.
I will trade up my SRT but will always own my GT.
There will never be any newer GT models that will make the '05 and '06's obsolete.
Ford will never do this exercise again... those days are over at Ford... they will struggle to stay in business for awhile and will not be able to build anything like the GT for the forseeable future.
There are a few thousand GT's and that's it. They will appreciate in price in time without a doubt and I don't expect much, if any, depreciation before then.
There will certainly be faster cars in the future but that is not the sole determination of value.
If you think you will ever want a GT, now is the time to get it.
If you're looking for a daily driver, the GT is not your car... I would only get it if you can afford both.
JMO.

I remember this article. If you look the GT only had 500hp at this time. This was before the GT was actually produced. I think after Ford read this article they went back and added on another 50HP.

I would wait until the 08 Viper comes out to make a judgement. I do see, however, that any GT's that are sold on the open market have a grand total of 1k miles or so. These cars are just not driven. If you want to have a "collectable", a majority of the cars that I can see are simply not driven or driven very very sparingly, thus if you drive your car, you may hurt the overall collectability.

2000 cars is a lot of units, in my opinion. Take an even rarer car, the Jaguar XJ200. Very few of these cars were ever made. Costs were in the 600k range. Now, you can pick them up for the price of the GT. Super rare, super high speed performance....and still no appreciation in 15 years.

And forgive the horrible comparison (but I needed a more modern American counterpart car), but look at the Turbo Trans Am in 1989, or Formula Firehawk in 1992. At its time, these cars were the GT of their day. Limited numbers. Did not really matter in the big scheme of things.

My suggestion is that you give both a try and buy the one that best suits you and forget about appreciation for the time being. I just don't see the prices of the GT flying off the radar screen within the next 3 to 5 years if you want to change your mind and you originally decide that the 08 is the car for you. That being said, however, I must admit that the GT is a fine piece of engineering and some colors are extremely hard to find. Black or dark blue, without stripes or with the single stripe on the side is almost impossible to come across. If you want that combination that is almost impossible to find, then I say pull the trigger now. You may never see another one.

more rearward weight bias is considered optimal. There is alot more to handling than just performance figures.

I will be the first to say that I hate Fords from way back due to quality issues and Ford's reluctance to honor their warranty on an issue that turned out to be improperly designed syncronizer lockout. I do like the Mustang GT and the Ford GT, but it would still be hard for me to give my hard earned money to a company that so blatenly screwed me. I was only 21 at the time and did not know how the world worked, but I looked that the factory Ford service rep straight in the eye and told him I would never buy a Ford in my life again and would talk everyone out of buying one for the rest of my life. As bad as I hate to see an American company on their knees, if it has to be anybody, I would rather it be Ford. I would go for the 08 Viper without a doubt :headbang:

I would buy an '08 Viper before a fgt due to the ongoing and as yet unresolved halfshaft bolt shearing problem which has been stranding a few unlucky fgt owners.
If that issue is cleared up by Ford I think it may be a closer call. If the halfshaft issue was identified and resolved and pricing was the same for each I would buy the fgt

Recently a yellow fgt was bid up to 134k on ebay and I'm not sure if it was sold . As for now fgt prices seem to be softening a bit.

Wow.....its amazing how bad service and quality issues can deter a future customer from ever buying the product again. Lesson to be learned for all business owners.

Patrick

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I have made my decision.

Ford GT 4 me too

I think it is a mistake for Ford to discontinue the GT. It doesn't make sense for them to stop building such an awesome car when they have designed, engineered and have all the tooling in place. IMO the GT is the only car that gives Ford an image. And they are in need of an image right now.
