Traction is a slight issue with the Paxton and I'm wanting to fix that. Would love to go with some lighter rims and tires while I'm at it. I talked to Luke at Tirerack and he said to go with 18's all around the car. Just wondering how it would look if the car wasn't lowered?

Also, how do you guys think SSR's would look on a Blue Coupe w/ Silver stripes? Ddin't know if it would be too many color contrasts?? Anybody have them?

I was originally going to go with sidewinders, but want a drag radial of some sort on the back for traction and don't want to go to a Hoosier R6 or A6 for around town driving.

Thanks!
Jason

Main worry about an 18" rim is if there would be a big ugly gap if the car wasn't lowered?

1st, if you are going to do 18s get the lowering caps, they are cheap, a total pain the ass to install, but allow an 18 to look good on an srt-10

ps2s definitely hook up better then ps1s. I have a paxton too, and their is a noticable difference, BUT it still ***** unless you get the tires warmed up, and its warmer out side (lowers your hp/tq). If I were you, and you wanted to have something that would hook up a paxton, I would do BFGs on the rears, and that helps to tame the wheel spin and make that boost more usable in a straight line.

I have a grey car, and the ssr's are gray, and i still dont like their color. But some people like darked/blacked out rims. I dont. But they are light weight, they are wider up front, and they allow you to run ps2s and bfgs, so I live with them. I also have ACR rims that WORK PERFECTLY, and look 10 times better, but I hate to scratch them, or have damage occur to them in these lovely streets of chicago.

You can see multiple photos of my car with ACR 18s and SSR 18's in my gallery. I wonder if anyone has sent the SSRs to get chromed and how they look?

If set up properly the wheel gap should be the same as before. 18"/19" 20" etc should all be the same height, just more or less tire on each rim choice.

Are there any clearance issues with running 18's? Like with the calipers, etc.

Unfortunately there is no such thing as proper setup with 18". The only exception was Pilot Sport 345/35-18 which is not available in US and I think they stopped production few years ago. I am getting them installed tomorrow as my supplier was able to dig them in some warehouse in Germany (production 04(!). I'll post pics how they look. It's going to be a lot of tire:).

The other alternative is PS2 335/30-18 but its about 1.5" smaller in diameter then stock => car not lowered is going to look like an SUV...

With ANY 18 inch choice that even works (some wont even if you do this) the brake caliper actuator relocator has to work. The brake itself doesnt move, but part of its actuator does. Another not so fun job, but still doable, if you give yourself plenty of time and patience.

Also, there is another solution for a tire, and that is the new Kuhmo's. So keep those in mind, but also keep in mind they arent the best in the rain, and have a reduced tread depth vs a standard street tire.

Also curtisy from direction infomration from Jon B, I can confirm that there is NO speedo change required when you change tire/wheel sizes on a GEN 3, unlike a gen 2. But you must STILL adhere to the similarity in sizes between the fronts relative to the rears, for ABS proper function. (keep the size rolling radius variance close to stock variance, and you should have no problems).

Thats a BIG difference. I wasnt aware that there are so little choices. Yeah, 1.5" smaller would like like you put a lift kit on it. But it would make it feel like its geared higher, and probably throws the speedo off a little. But I guess you dont have a choice.

18s without lowering definitely gives the car an SUV stance compared to 19s. Lowering is a must if you want the car to look right. Speedo does not need to be adjusted on Gen 3s. The sensors that control that do not read off of wheel rotation speed. You will have to switch your tire pressure sensors over if you don't want to lose that functionality. You will need an ebrake relocation kit, but not a big deal.

Good news is that a set of SSRs and light weight R compounds like Khomus or Sport Cups REALLY wake the car up. It does give a slightly higher gearing as well. You will turn about 200 rpm more at any given speed than you will on OEM set-up.

I'll probably stay clear of the 18's then. Just don't want to lower the car. What are these Kumho's you speak of? Do they come in 19's?

You guys are wrong on the speedo question. A tire diameter change effects the accuracy of the speedometer on all cars (unless you happen to own one that uses GPS).

The speedometer/odometer uses the ABS signals, which indicate vehicle speed based on the average wheel rotational speed. This means a speedo change is not required for a differential change (vs Gen I/II which do require a change). But, since the system is reading the speed of all 4 wheels, the effect of the rears alone being smaller is cut in half.

And Jon B (and Jon A's SRT10 Coupe's speedo) dissagrees with you. Ask your self why there is NO speedo calibration box offering for the srt-10. Because its not needed. Jon B is right on this one, no speedo box calibration is needed on an srt-10. Even if you change gears or tires. Hopefully Jon B will interject and explain. I can not. I just know mine is dead on based on a GPS system, and im running 18's all around 335 in the rear with 315s up front. No change to speedo made by me, and im still dead accurate.

Uh Jon, sorry, no.

Tell me the engineering secret that lets the rolling radius of the tire change and the car somehow know. It is just the variation is just not big enough to need a recalibration. JonB has only sold a box for those who got a differential change since the Gen I/II counts transmission output shaft rotations to calculate vehicle speed. The Gen III uses abs sensor signals to do the same (i.e. counts wheel rotations). Make the tires bigger or smaller and the computer calculates wrong.

BTW if you get bigger in front and smaller in the rear (like you did) the average rolling diameter of all 4 tires may not change, and thus the accuracy is unaffected. But change only the rear and it will not be the same. Pure physics.

PartsRack has the SSRs and several tire options, free Mt-Bal on Michelins, Cups or PS2s, Kumhos or Hoosiers. We also offer Toyos. We have the LOWEST prices on SSR and / or Michelin. Thanks. We also have the spring caps, and ONE SET of Sidewinder Viper Silvers that would look AWESOME on your car $2695!!

lol. I love how I call you to the thread by email to answer the speedo question, and you take it as a sales opportunity.. u crack me up JonB. But I love ya (in a straight way)

But on a good note.. Jon B DID email me this:

"Obviously and technically it requires a speedo correction, but the PCM does the correction ! It is passsive so far as the owner is concerned. It will NOT accept a large variance however........ it can sef correct a few % points. I spoke personally to the engineer in charge of that system. And GPSs prove it over and over. "

Thanks Jon, YOU ROCK !!
