Hey Guys,

My 1996 GTS is leaking oil. I think it is the timeing seal? I took some pics and was wondering if anyone can tell by looking at the pics if the timing seal is the culprit?

I had a hard time posting pics so I put them on my coaching website. They are under GTS oil Leak. The pictures are taken lying underneath the car. The compressor is on the driverside of the car.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance! Troy:)

I found the source of the leak last night. It is leaking from the oil pan on the passanger side. I took the pan off and cleaned the block, rubber gasket and the lip of the pan. I put some gasket silicon on it and put it back on. It stopped the leak. Well, most of it. It drips a little. But nothing like it was. I think the rubber gasket was damaged just a little bit. So I think if I get a new gasket and do the whole thing over again, I should stop the Leak permanently.

Does anyone know the price of the gasket? Does someone else make a quaility gasket other than Mopar?

Thanks!

Chuck also can answer that question...don't know--any other '96 GTS's out there with same problem? Chuck himself had an oil pan problem with his Viper...but I have a mental block right now, and forget what year/model Viper he has!! (I'm thinking '92RT? RED, of course!) He would not mind answering your questions....and I know I'm speaking for him, but seeing as all others say the same thing, he takes time out to explain everything and makes it MAKE sense!! :2tu: Good Luck~~~juli

Bumping an old thread. My Viper is experiancing the leak. I have tried the "Seal the Threads" fix, but still leaking oil. I bought a new OEM oil pan gasket today for $135 with a 25% VCA discount. But one of the guys from work showed me a Fel-Pro Gasket from Summit for $60. Before I replace the OEM gasket, I was wondering if anyone has any experiance with Fel-Pro Gaskets?

You may want to look at the timing chain cover/main seal as the culprit. It was causing mine to slowly leak oil. Have you looked on top of your engine near the front between the runners? I had 2 little puddles of oil there. After cleaning the puddles, they returned within a month. After replacing the timing chain cover/main seal gaskets, no more leaks or puddles. :headbang:

Thanks cyaford. I haven't ruled that out, but most of the oil is on the right hand side of the pan towards the rear. Might have to do all three and be done with it.
I sure won't have any rust issues with the bottom off the car. Man that oil gets everywhere!!!

I have the rear mainseal gasket but haven't been in hurry to drop the tranny to replace it.

How much did it cost to get yours fixed? I was quoted $900 ($650 with VCA discount)labor to replace the rear mainseal gasket at the local dealer. Maybe it is just me, but $900 to remove a tranny and replace cover plate gasket seems a bit steep.....but the big problem was the service department did not give me a warm fuzzy feeling that they knew what they were doing and that it would be done right. I called three days in row just to try to schedule an appointment and they never returned my call so I went down in person and it wasn't much better. I will probably end up doing it myself. Sorry, I digress.

Any one use the Fel-Pro Oil Pan gasket?

I have done the oil pan trick for a while now but still have experienced a leak... very slow over time but enough to get everywhere in my garage. I have had the oil pan replaced, gasket replaced and the trick with the bolts.

I finally went into a tech here in Indy at Palmer Dodge and he thought I might be one of the 96GTS's with porous blocks. Doing another wipedown of the tranny and block area to assure where the leak might be generated from.
