Here is the story, got the viper this spring, 1998 red GTS, drove it a bit and then i crashed it. Stupid rear brake locked up when doing a hard braking. Those brake *****. I had just finished installing the exhaust and headers... Oh well, **** happens, luckily, neither do i and the passenger are badly hurt so everything is fine. I should be receiving the insurrance money pretty soon.

Now i am debating as to which car i should get. I was able to recover my VEC2 and my widebands from the car, doubt i'll be able to recover the headers but anyway, i am trying to see if i buy an other viper or change car. I was thinking about buying an NSX because i had one for a very short period of time and miss it but i know that after the viper, the NSX is going to feel so slow...

So i beleive i might be going to a viper again.

Here is my main concern. Since i was so unlucky with the brakes, i was wondering if it was a good upgrade top buy an 01+ to get the ABS. I really like the yellow 2001 but they are expensive. Two other vipers that i really like is the silver/blue 99 ACR and the 96-97 B/W. My car was red but that is really not the color i prefer, it's just that they are cheaper.

Problem with buying any of the 3 cars i listed above is that i will need to import it (i am in Canada) which is a lot of hassle. My other option is a local, friend of mine, that could sell me a really clean 1997 red that was accidented but not salvaged (repaired it himself, he does that for a living and knows viper a lot). I could get it for like 15k less than what a 2001 yellow would cost me. probably around 10k less than what a sliver or a B/W would cost.

Also, i have a Roe supercharger i was suppose to install on my car, i might install it on the next car. I am afraid of the cream puff if i buy an 01 with the supercharger. Baiscally, why the heck isn't there a car with forged internal and abs... lol

So what do you guys think, should i go with the abs and just use the 5lbs pulley on a 2001 that will cost me more, go in between and buy a B/W or a Silver/Blue or go the cheap route and buy the 1997, keep the rest of the money and make a trip or whatever.

Buy the way, i do care about my money and have a hard time considering paying 15k more for a colour i like and abs. But then again, should i please myself and buy my dream car and be done with it?

thanks again for any feedback, in the mean time, here is a pic of my rolled over car.

Oh, gosh...so sorry about the rollover, glad no one was injured. You have a dilemna for sure. There are just too many pros and cons for each Viper you have mentioned...bottom line, what do you FEEL is the car for you? Considering the mods you already have, what you'll put into the car, ABS (yep, important)...check out as much as possible on each car, and then decide which you REALLY REALLY HAVE to have!!! THAT is what you know: VIPER FEVER...good luck in your decision, and glad you're going with another Viper!

I would go with an 01 or an 02, from what I hear it is cheaper and easier to mod to forged pistons than it is to add ABS. Not an expert but that is what I heard

yeah the problem is that 01-02 are much more expensive, is abs that good at preventing wheel locking up?

i don't want black, all my sports cars were black and i hate washing them... ;)

If you want a blown car, go with the 99 or older car. If braking is the priority then get one with abs. Changing to forged pistons the right way is no cheap deal, and if you put the ROE on with 5 lbs of boost your going to want more. Five lbs of boost is way too low, and when you go big it's going to cost you.

hmm, i can see on roe site that to upgrade the piston, it cost 1116,95, what other cost is to consider iif i want to change the pistons?

Also, there seem to be an upgrade for the earlier gts, so i guess the upgrade for the 2000-2002 isn't just installing 96-99 piston i guess? Anyone got details on that?

When I bought my GTS, ABS was the priority. As posted, ABS would be a wicked mod to add, but pistons come right out after a little wrench time.

And Juli, quit telling everyone about black cars being the shiniest. Not only is red the fastest, it is also the shiniest. And with stripes, it is even faster and shinier!!!

01-02's are not much more expensive, except possibly an FE. B&W's will not be any cheaper......if anything more expensive, unless they have high milage or are in poor condition.

The helpful hint would read "Jules, NOW is the time to adjust your monitor, decrease you caffeine intake, and take a 150mph whip to cleanse the senses!"

"Jewels" to you, Dave!! I'll take a 150mph whip ANYDAY--a DRIVE that is!~~~~juli
(WAYYYY too much time today, obviously!! Mike is working on his work truck, otherwise, it's 'quality time' for us when we can grab it!!! That will be this afternoon ;) ;) !)
Enjoy your weekend, Dave....carry on with the thread--we keep hijacking them, Dave...gotta stop before we get canned! :omg: ~juli

The 2000-2002 motors utilize a longer rod for less rod angularity. In order to use the 96-99 piston you would need the correct rods as well. The Roe pistons for 2000-2002 are forged and dimensionally correct .
The correct way to install forged pistons would be to pull the motor, remove the heads, check all the bores for roundness, check the cross hatch pattern. No ridge on the top of the bores and if everything was completely perfect, then order a set of pistons made to specs off your bore sizes. The crank rods and pistons should be then balanced as an assembly. This is if everything was perfect, many guys will tell you that you can just pull out the old pistons and slap in some new ones. The choice is yours, but if your inexperienced in this area prepare to get hosed.

Looks like you should buy a car with ABS, or buy a cheaper car with no ABS and spend the money you saved on driving lessons. :drive:

It sounds like you have experience with, or know of cases etc, where just changing the pistons to forged of stock dimensions is a bad or less than successful idea? :nono: :dunno:

i knew i would get a comment like that, i never had a car that locked a wheel while braking hard, all the japanese car i had were able to brake straight without having to feather the brakes. Please don't tell me i am the only that thinks the braking system on the GTS is far from being as good as the rest of the car...

Puma, as you can see no easy answers, consider this, go for a 06 coupe. Best brakes by far (my ACR has full stop -tech's and still not as good as the 06 stock). and more base HP. I saw a black 13K mile coupe for 61K on autotrader (and many others for mid-60's). If your ROE is new and uninstalled you'll find a buyer to pay a pretty good price. Use the money to buy up to a newer car, or use the Roe $'s to buy a paxton.

the new coupe is out of my price range unfortunatly cause i would really like to buy one. If i end up paying for an 01, it would need to be a maximum of 54000. My supercharger is used and i might consider selling it. For the moment, it doesn't hurt to have it in my basement so i'll keep it until i decide what i want. But from what i can understand, the 01+ brake system might be safer (even if it's not as good as an 03+)

I also think the ABS is more important then the color or the $. While the $ is a tough one. The ABS is well worth it I think for the real world situations. You can change the color fiarly cheaply if you want another color. As far as the mods. All the years are fairly easy to mod. Don't worry to much about that. Just buy the VERY best you can afford and go slower on the mods. In the long run you'll be happier cause you have the "BEST" car you could get, as opposed to getting the car you wanted RIGHT now that has the mods or is slightly cheaper.

In 10 years you'll never know where the extra $ went that you would have spent. But you'll be happy you have the car you wanted every day you drive it.
