I recieved my summer issue of Viper a few weeks back and read the article indicating how many Vipers were in each state as well as how many VCA members reside in the various states. Then lately i've seen videos on the internet and read threads about various Vipers being totaled and I got to wondering if anybody has tried to document what percentage of Vipers are gone. I would not find it hard to believe that possibly 10% or more no longer exist.

Totalled beyond reincarnation? Or totalled, repaired, sent thru a few states to wash the title, and than reappearing from the dead as a low mile one owner?

I've totalled 16.67% of the Vipers I've owned over the years (1 of 6)....seems I am right on target.

V'Bob, you are just so statistically average.

:eater:

Sounds right!

Skip Thomas of "Viper Days" fame told me that 1 out of 6 Vipers ends up totaled.

So viperbob, I have to agree with dave6666's assessment.....:(

However, since you have owned 6 Vipers, there is nothing else average about you!:2tu:

Have you ordered your 2008 yet?:headbang:

I would not doubt the number being up around 20%. Vipers were the only and first cars w/ crazy 400 plus horsepower and no ABS. I would guess less than 1% of all Viper owners ever drove a 500 hp car before stepping into a Viper. It is a race car sold for the general public...requiring no special driving lessons...a recipe for disaster for many. If my friend, who owns a gen 1 had not told me how to drive the car and what to expect, I would have probably totalled my car w/in the first month.

Keep wrecking 'em over there. Like Chad said earlier, every one that gets totaled just increases the value of mine.

Each wreck can also increase the insurance premiums for all of us because the claim rate gets for that model gets worse. It is a somewhat unforgiving performance machine; I know because I have been very lucky twice thanks to that worthless limited slip feature in the rear ends.

The dealer I bought mine from told me that most people crash them in the first few days. These cars do require 100% attention. I drove home from the dealer that day white knuckled. 3 years later still requires 100% I bought a remote that mounts on the steering wheel for my Pioneer/GPS so I never had to take my hands off the wheel to turn up or down my MP3 or replay etc. love it.

Blah blah blah. Don't spend all your money on the car so you'll have some left for other expenses.

More car value - higher insurance = NO $ CHANGE

Clean the gene pool, keep wrecking them.

I recall Skip Thomas saying 15% a few years ago. I also remember a USA Today article 4-5 years ago saying the average insurance claim was the highest on viper's, around 24K. (which is a Gen I or II hood, facia and wheel/tire). High cost to repair coupled with tons of HP and torque, compounded by unskilled or daredevil drivers. I had an exhaust shop total my 1st '06 with the tech going less than 2 miles from the shop. In my ownership experience it's 25%.

I'm not sure what your point is but it doesn't seem related to my point. Your first one seems a little insulting. Overall, it sounds arrogant to me.

Sorry man. I just find it amusing that people drive these expensive cars and complain when their insurance goes up a dollar a month. Mine did this year.

I apologize for offending you.

And driving a Viper is arrogance.

To be clear, I wrecked Viper #4 of #6, and had 1000s of accident free Viper miles prior to the wreck. As they say, *hit happens.

:dunno: I don't understand why you think the limited slip feature is worthless? There is either something wrong with your car or ............!

Dave6666, thank you for your response; a lot of rich people complain about the price of gas too. Your point about driving a Viper as an act of arrogance is interesting; it's the ugly truth and something I personally would rather hide from. I'm not interested in showing off but the machine is far too interesting to walk away from (as in ownership).

Flyin'Low: When I wrote that response I was still hot under the collar from getting snakebit recently. I was turning left from a stoplight to an on-ramp to the freeway. I decided to put a little more energy to the pedal than normal and continued to press gradually a little more but I didn't mash the pedal to the floor but hey - we want to fly a little here sometimes right? Well, the fishtailing started rather violently just as I straightened and there wasn't a dam thing I could do because the normal steering and pedal corrections don't work with this car. So I did this in front of traffic that was right behind me and I was lucky they backed off and let me finish my act. I hit the brakes when I was clear of the traffic and ended up 180 over the side which was facing the opposite direction of the on-ramp. I was embarrassed, relieved (nobody got hit), and angry. It was a two lane on-ramp but I was ahead enough so that I could solo in front of everybody. So the white Viper with the blue stripes has a notorious rep in Vegas. I was puzzled as to why a performance vehicle like this doesn't hold straight under strong acceleration. Yes, the rear end oil has been changed. I'm looking into a Quaife setup.
