GTS vs SRT10 coupe

Guess you shoulda upgraded the brakes, like many do. Especially when you are putting that much power down. Seems like a no brainer.
Funny thing is that they were upgraded... so it was a no brainer:rolleyes:

To be honest... maybe 80 - 85.... but when a person comes across 3 lanes going 40mph on the freeway.. it was bad!! My buddy in his srt stopped on the dime... I had to threshold brake, let off, go around ( and get sideways in the process) then correct.... lets just say I made my decision to sell that day!

I'm on my 3rd Viper... Oddly enough, all of them were white with blue stripes ('96 RT10, '98 GTSR, & '06 VOI9 coupe. Anyway, each successive generation has more horsepower, and more "creature comforts". Specific things I like better about the "stock" SRT-10: Much better brakes; a little more horsepower; the motor never gets hot; and the interior is somewhat better functional and looking. On the other hand, key weaknesses of the "stock" SRT-10 include: terrible runflat tires that don't handle well; crummy limited slip differential that locks up and wears out when racing; much softer and chip-prone paint; and too much heat in the passenger compartment... Since I am a serious autocrosser, most of the weaknesses have been overcome via upgrades i.e. Hoosier race tires, Corsa Exhaust, Quaife posi, Motons, Fidenza, It has taken nearly all season to get my gen 3 to be as fast as my old gen 2 was on various autocross courses. (It hasn't helped that it is nearly 2 inches longer wheelbase, and 1 inch wider front track) Overall, I would recommend the Gen 3 over older versions, unless you are planning to keep the car for 20+ years when a Gen 1 or 2 will likely be more valuable to collectors.

Technically 70 mph is the fastest speed allowed on our freeways in CA, though most are still at 65 mph. I cruise our SUV at 80mph and constantly and am getting passed. 80mph is not that fast on a interstate or freeway.
Many states though allow up to 80 mph, there may even still be a few that dont really have a daytime speed limit as long as your are driving reasonable and not unsafe.

I love all Vipers. That said, I'm a big hp guy and that means that the new 08 is out! Can't be modified for a couple years probably. The Gen 3 doesn't fit a Roe supercharger so they're out for me as well. The 1st Gen doesn't have outside handles and no solid windows or roof so they're out. I do a lot of travel and usually more than a day trip so the little trunk of the SRT is out. Hmmm. that leaves only the GTS.

720rwhp plus 100 Nitrous shot. Better brakes, exhaust, clip-on cup holders, VR1's with PS tires, 1,000hp axle shafts, upgraded speakers - looks are totally dissimilar to any vette - I think my GTS is my idea of perfect!

I realize that the Gen 3 coupe is slipperier at high speeds than mine, but it still has the shape of the vette with the front opening hood.

As far as stockers go the Gen4 has it! Best everything, except looks (it still uses a vette shape).

As said earlier, all the cars can be made to perform better than ever the Gen 4 so it just depends on exactly what you want.

Your kidding right?!?! That has got to be the stupidest thing I have ever heard... I was reckless when the flow of traffic is going 70 plus on the freeway and someone goes across THREE lanes going 40!?!? Thats like me going 40mph and someone stepping in front of my car!!! :rolleyes:

anyways.... what it comes down too is that you can get power from all the generations...
There is no one answer that is best..... but if take all the EMOTION and ATTACHMENT to your current car and look at the facts.... there is no question in my book!! :D

I had a 99 rt10....Lost control and wrecked it doing 55 mph...

My insurance said it was totalled and gave me 42K for my 99 rt10 ( pretty much top dollar.)

Well I was set to buy a new Viper in my price range of 47-53K..

Saw a LOT of nice 2002 GTS/ACR's in this price range..CHERRY

Then saw a handful of 1996-1999 ROE supercharged vipers for this price or eve less making a minimum of 550 rwhp...And one even offerred to me with 750 rwhp ROE/NOS/**** for less than my budget..

But I still chose the SRT10..Why????

Quite frankly if my Gen2 had better brakes I would have never hit that wall. I had a good 50 yards going through dirt/rocks before I hit that wall and I still ended up hitting the wall at 15 mph..

My gen3 would have stopped before I hit the wall. Id bet my left nut on it.And when you loose control at 55 mph on your way to a wall you'll realize just how important brakes are.

the brakes on the SRT10 were more important to me than the supercharged gen2 power that i could have gotten for the same price..

Besides the brakes..

My 99 rt10 with
-KN filters
-no cats
-smooth tubes
-AEM tune
-roller rockers....trapped a highest mph ever of 121 mph in the 1/4 mile

On the other hand...

My 03 SRT10 with only
-roller rockers
-KN filters...Trapped a best ever of 122 mph at the same location

Then with no cats and no mufflers trapped 124 mph at the same location

The SRT10 stock for stock and mod for mod is a solid 3 mph higher trapping vehicle in the 1/4 mile

As well my 99 Rt10 maxed at 177 mph while my 03 SRT10 maxes at 193 mph

Then the engine bay and interior of my 99 RT10 were decent and held there own against most cars....The SRT10 interior and engine bay on the other hand are somthing I like to show off and are quite frankly gorgeous...

then theres the handling..Curves I used to slow down for in my 99 RT10 I now speed up for in my SRT10


Now to the looks department. If I had never really seen a viper up close before and went to Ebay and was checking out Vipers and trying to choose between the GTS and SRT10 vert..Id pick the GTS in a heart beat. In pictures it just looks so bad ass and curvy while the pics of the SRT10 look flat and boring....


BUT...In real life that same GTS looks dated when you really geta solid look at the head lights ect. and poor fit/finish with huge gaps here in there between the hood/headlights and such, and then the under whelming engine bay/interior ( come on admit it...The first time you looked at that 488 CI you thought it would look nicer)Still a beautiful car but all means.But it looks better on a poster than it dos in real life. Then as already mentioned..The interior was probally pretty awesome in 1996..And admittedly I did think my 99 RT10's interior was nicer than my 2004 C5's...But it's nonthing to really be proud of eighter...

Now that i think about it my 99 RT10 had a 200 mph speedo just like my C5 did. Again nice..But not a huge step from other "normal" cars today that have 180 mph speedos.. The 220 mph speedo on the SRT10 has popped more than a few of my mustang/vette buddies eyes.

On the other hand that same SRT10 that looked flat and boring on posters and such looks totally differant in real life. You quickly realize that the flatness in pics looks darn right low and intimidating in real life. The lights are top quality and the fit/finish is porshe like compared to the gen2's kit car fit/finish..

You open the engine bay and see that the roller rocker covers are painted a bright red VS the gen 2's faded red..Then there's that Manifold that sits high above everything else and looks almost Ferrari like VS the Gen2's more common like appearance.

Now when you throw out the technology/handling/fit&finish and just leave it soley up to the looks...Well gen 2 owners say it's a no contest. But Id have to disagree. Ive had my red 2003 SRT10 parked next to a red 2002 ACR quite a few times ( buddy) and guess wich car people seemed to prefer.

Now put a c5 next to a gen 2 Viper and the viper will win 99% of the time. Put an SRT10 vert against an GTS...And well it just really depends on the crowd.

This is one long lasting post.

Many of you guys are complaining about the Gen II / GTS's brakes and you are correct, they aren't quite as good as the Gen III's brakes from the factory.

The question is, why not upgrade them to the Gen III brakes? This is fairly simple to do and much cheaper than adding a supercharger or a heads / cam package.

Check with Dave at Dave's Big Brakes (he advertises on this forum). I bought his kit for my GTS (track car) and it really works well. So well that folks like Archer Racing is using them on some of their customers track cars. I believe Parts Rack sells the kit and so do a bunch of other well know, quality vendors.

Does the SRT have the same polar moment of interia as the GTS? I am not certain, but I think you can only bolt on so much before physics takes over. I still like my GTS though.

I think you should love your GTS..It's an amazing machine. I know i loved my 99 rt10.

The one thing I did prefer about my RT10 over the SRT10 was that lumpy 708 cam..Man that car idled like a beaste. the SRT10 idles like a ***** cat

You can put the srt10 brakes on... but it doesn't have the technology to back it up that comes with a stock srt10!!

Yeah, maybe if your first love was some 50+ 'cougar' ... and these days, even the young 20-somethings are getting enhanced ... it just depends on whether you like to keep it stock, or go for mods ...

... in fact, for some folks there maybe be a trade-off as to the cost of the mods for the woman, or mods for the car :money:

Wrecked my Roe supercharged 98 GTS when it spun out in the rain (with Gen 3 runcraps) and hit a Semi head-on. Later I was happy to have been driving a Viper, any Viper, as it went under the bumper and front tire of the tractor trailer, ripped his bumper, spring, fuel and airtanks off the Tractor and we went into the ditch without much of the Viper's nose. No scratches or bruises, although the Truck driver had a sore wrist.

Insurance company paid me $60,000 (stock value), 6,000 for mods and I immediately replaced it with another GTS that was Roe sc'd by Larry Macedo. This one had 720rwhp, VR1's, traction!, Stoptech brakes, 9-1 forged pistons, etc. etc. for $55,000. I also got a new NX Nitrous system half installed, stocker parts, and a set of BFG drag radials and extra PS1's. 10.5@139mph on Pilots. A couple of trophies and Z06 kills later ... I'll stick with the GTS. At least until the '08 can be modified for more hp.

Until this baby gets old, I can't imagine how to improve on perfection. Although I did my cusin for a ride, he said that was enough rides for the rest of his life (too fast). I think he started having a "panic/anxiety" attack while my foot was on the floor. I DO understand that my car is not for everyone.

Even Dave Polson had other plans. He was waiting for his HUGE power TT Gen 1 to come home. He also has an '06 copperhead in his garage.

Now that's cheating Brad! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Appearancewise, the VOI9 and the GTS both look great. Performancewise, I only have experience with the Gen 3. I like them all which is why I always enjoy big Viper Club events so I can see them all together.;)
