All,
It seems it was time for me to receive new license plates (not just stickers) from the State. Well, they sent me some cheap, crappy, black painted letter, plates. Since I have personalized plates "VIPURR", the 'number' (letters) did not change. I also got the stickers to apply to the plates. I am NOT going to use the new plates, rather am going to apply the stickers to my existing RAISED letter plates. What a rip off.

Later,

I put the new flat plates on the shelf for posterity, and put the stickers on the "raised" plates as well. The new plates letters are thinner too, so it's harder to read.
This will happen every 7 years! What a rip off!:nono:

I inquired, and found out that they still send out raised letter plates - but not for custom plates. If you have custom plates, you get the flat painted ones.

Maybe we can't afford to pay the inmates to stamp out the custom plates anymore... :dunno: and I won't even go into where the extra money really goes... :nono:

Alaska did the same thing with the flat plates and it only lasted about 3 years then they changed back to the raised letter. There was a lot of ******** to the state about the plates.

I could not believe my eyes when reading this post. I have the new plates on my Viper and Twin Turbo GTO and I LOVE them!!! A few friends of mine here in the Tri-Cities have the same and we were all glad to see the sleep design! I think they look great!

Do any of you have the front plates on the car?I got stopped the first day I was out in my new Viper by a sheriff who told me that he wasn't going to give me a ticket but the Staters would...I haven't been stopped since but I never have seen a front plate on any Vipers..

The Seattle Police will stop you - especially along the hot spots like Alkai, I've seen it happen - and I'm told they issue tickets.

I have a slip in front plate that I use - I pull it out for shows, track time and special events.

In Washington, it's a secondary offense - meaning that they can't stop you for it, but if they stop you for anything else, then they can ticket you for it. I understand that there's also an exception for cases when there is no practical way to mount the plate, or when it would interfere with proper operation (cooling airflow, etc), but I've heard that the state is notoriously stingy in handing out these exceptions.

I did the background on the front plate exceptions. There is ONE in the state.
PANOZ- That's it.

The slip-on plate I carry in the trunk. When asked I say- Oh just washed the car, and forgot to put the plate back on. Then I slip it on, and take a picture of the officer with the plate ON the car.

I just got the cheap flat plates for my '96 as well. It seems to me that since the $30 tab initiative was passed they have found ways to add "fees" to grab more money from us. Our 300C had an excess weight fee of $20 or so. I can see requiring a new plate if yours is damaged but mine (and yours I'm sure) still looks new. I plan to do the same as you - put the tabs on the old plates.

Regarding no front plate, I have 7 vehicles that don't have a front plate and so far no tickets. I have gotten tickets over the years but never a mention of the front plate.

There is one more bill they want to pass. The Carbon bill, they want to tax you on how much carbon your vehicle releases in the atmosphere to be included with your car tabs! Vote all the clowns out of office in this state! No new Taxes, what dont they understand?

Brian- How are they going to know how much carbon my car makes? Is the state going to start taking my mileage? Include it in the gas tax? Start inspecting (to get mileage) all the cars? This seems like a half thought out idea.

I think the state is full of half thought ideas, It was on the news the other night, a ford focus would pay $60 compared to a full size sedan at about $160 on top of the tabs. maybe emission testing, who knows? I know sooner or later Thurston county will need to have our cars emission tested.

On another note not related, I need sunshine!:drive::usa:
