"Spark plugs must be removed and later reinstalled in the same cylinder or misfire may occur." From Belanger Installation Instructions.

Anyone know the basis for such an assertion?

I really don't know why the plugs have to be removed at all. They don't look like they'll be in the way.

We'll find out in April if I get off my duff and get my headers installed.

I've got the old headers off, and I too don't see why one would need to remove the plugs. Unless worried about bumping and damaging them.

Is it normal process when removing plugs to replace them in the same cylinder "to prevent misfire"? I'm just curious as I've never heard that before, and want to know the reason for the misfire.

I would guess that the PCM has adapted to each plug. Each plug being considered slightly different than the next one.

Putting them back in the same spot does make good common sense unless you blast clean and re-gap them all.

Or like Plum said... Get in the Zone and man up that $1.69 ea. for new ones.

The installation directions are different between GenII and GenIII. I have both sets of instructions. The GenIII says to remove the spark plugs while the GenII instructions don't mention plugs at all. I've removed and installed my Belanger headers on my GenII 3 times and never had to remove the spark plugs. Could you have accidentally received the GenIII instructions for a GenII set?

Ha. My old ('07) instructions for GenII don't mention the plugs. He sent me the GenIII instructions (by accident) recently and they go into detail about the plugs. I should get the latest instructions for my GenII so my collection is complete. The plugs are not in the way and the 2-piece design of these headers makes it stupid easy to install. Hey...ya' can always call Lou and get the scoop on this one. :D

FWIW, Dave, I installed my fresh headers over the weekend but didn't put the shields back on, maybe later. However, I did form the shields on the headers prior to installation. I found that the foam packing material that came with the headers made a great protective cover for the headers for shield manglement. FYI.

I thought my instructions just mentioned removing the plug shields, not the plugs themselves, though I don't have them handy to reference. In any case, practically speaking you don't need to remove the plugs and I prefer not to just to prevent anything from finding its way into the cylinder like a header bolt.

The instructions are for Dodge Viper V-10 Headers: 92 - 02, so it appears to be Gen II. Hmm. I think I'll just leave them in. Thanks everyone for your input.

I don't see any reason for plug removal. I just removed a buddy's entire exhaust ((headers - tailpipes)) tonight off his 96 GTS, in preparation for installation of belanger headers and randomtech from there back.

because they can easily get bumped and broken and then you'll be screwed and then
call Lou as to why doesn't he have you remove them for percautionary reasons.
Also you should check em to ensure every cylinder looks clean, so if a problem occurs
you can ensure the condition before header install.
Any more stupid questions

Checking the condition of the plugs before the install makes sense. How do the plugs get bumped and broken with the two piece headers and the metal spark plug shields? I don't see it.

Any more stupid questions
Is this how you respond to your customers when they call up with general questions? Why insult members here about a basic installation question?

Oh, I see now. You are a Roe distributor who can't replace a simple header without destroying the rest of the engine. And since you apparently have this problem, you assume the rest of us are stupid and lack integrity, since of course, we would blame Lou if we did. Makes perfect sense. How could I have been so stupid!
