Like a fool I showed off for a friend and did a 4 gear burn out. While coasting at about 20 mph I floored it in first then second then third. Smoking the tires all the while. I hit fourth and it bogged down and slowly took off. I used to burn out in 4th with the 3:73's lol.

Anyway, I shifted back to neutral and coasted to a stop. I tried to go back to first but it wouldn't go in. I tried all gears and it just wouldn't happen. I turned the car off and rowed through all the gears just fine. I turned it back on but it wouldn't go into gear! I turned it off again. I then placed the car in first gear and started it like that. It would then go through the gears (although not as smoothly).

Is this a clutch problem? I didn't smell any burnt clutch. I didn't see any fluid on the ground either. A buddy of mine told me to refill the clutch resivoir (sp?). I did so and it got only slightly better. Anyone have any ideas on what the issue is? BTW the clutch is a spec stage 3 with about 6k miles on it. I've never had a set of sticky tires on it.

I do not think that the problem is your clutch. Check your engine and tranny mounts. If no damage or dislocation there, then have your pilot bearing checked. If it's not the pilot bearing, my next guess is that you damaged a synchro. Good luck.

Come to think of it there is a rattling sound comming from undernieth the car. It started to happen a few weeks before this problem. Thanks for the advice Bobpantax!

You could also bleed your clutch to get new fluid in it, to see if that helps? :dunno:

Sounds like a clutch problem... hopefully hydraulic . What Chuck said. At various times during the bleeding ....pump the clutch pedal as fast as possible ( like 3 times per sec).

btw...was the fluid low whem you checked it?

It was about 1/4 low.

Let me add one more "what-if". When the clutch slips, like it would when it sees high torque in 4th gear at a relative low speed, it expands, especially the stock clutch, or any clutch that is based on a high carbon content. When it expands, it could start to contact the flywheel (drag), this causes the input shaft to rotate, thus, making it hard or impossible to shift. It should return to normal unless the disk itself is is damaged or warped.

How long do you think it would take to return to normal if that was the problem. This has been going on for the last 30 or so miles. :dunno:

There is probably more than one answer, but, it sounds like the disk and/or clutch plate is warped. You can actually get under the car and have someone push the clutch in, then try to rotate the disk. Just remove the inspection cover. This can be done with a screw driver with kink. It should rotate pretty easy. If you cannot get it to rotate, it will have to come out to get to the issue.

I cracked a pressure plate once and it gave me the same symptoms. That was in a Ford, not the viper, but it behaved very similar to what you describe.
