Gas Pedal fell off!

My gas pedal fell off the linkage over the weekend. Nothing appears broken..I've found the plastic pedal (obviously) and the pin that connects it to the linkage. I put it back together, but it only lasted for a few hours before the pin worked its way out again.

How does the assembly go together? There doesn't appear to be a 3rd piece that locks the pin in place? There are splines on the pin, and I think I may have pushed it through from the wrong side (left to right). The splines seem to line up with the linkage if the insert from right to left. Can someone verify which is correct.

. I had the same thing happen a year or two ago. I took a look at the same pieces you mentioned, then stuffed them in the "glove box" rather than spend 45min upside down in the foot well. I find the metal bar left behind allows for much better pedal feel so I left it off. :drive:

The pin is a grooved type dowel pin. Having never had mine in my hand I can't speak for the dimensional details, but they are not rocket science either.

Ideas:

-> Get a slightly larger pin of same or similar style

-> Replace with a shoulder screw and nut

-> Take factory pin and bend it slightly and reinstall

I turned the plastic housing over so I could insert the pin from left to right. I think most pressure on the pedal would be in a left to right direction, esp if heel/toeing.
I took the pin to Lowes and found a cap that tapped onto the end of the pin. So far so good. I also picked up some C clips, but the cap seems to be holding. Take the whole assembly out of the car and work on it on a workbench.

Cap sounds like a good idea. I was going to replace with a nut and bolt if it happened again.

Did you get your voice mail? Were the pin goes through the plastic pedal, it wares the holes and the pin wont stay in. Re-assemble and put a dab of RTV on the ends of the pin. A new pedal list for $217 and they are on back order.

i know this is old news by now but here goes anyway. my pedal fell off my 2000 gts. dealer said you have to buy the whole cluster for $700. if you turn it over you can see that the pin splines only make proper contact with the pedal from one direction and not the other. i took the pin to a local machine shop and had them drill a cotter pin hole in the very end of the pin($30). the spring is still in the glove box because appearantly i ain't smart enough to figure out how it goes back together---after dicking with it for about an hour!

The spring should keep the bottom end of the pedal rotated up and away from the carpet/floor.
