Just picked her up this past Saturday. All I can say is WOW!!!! The power, handling, looks and even the ride. Not as rough as I though it would be or read about. I could very easily drive it every day. It's very comfortable. Definitely worth the wait even though it was 9 months. But mother nature is looking after me so I can drive it for a few days before winter.
I do have some questions that I hope you can answer. When should I do my first oil change? Are these engines broken in at the plant?

Thanks guys!

Hey! Congrats and welcome to the Viper Nation!

Feel free to ask all of the questions you want! Thats why we are here!

First oil change, I have always been a fan of doing the first oil change in the first 1000 miles. Motor break in is called just that for a reason. You are breaking in a motor. There is many impurities that will collect in the oil in the first few thousand miles.

As for break in, not 100% sure on a 4th gen, but that is listed in the front of your owners manual. Basically take it easy for the first 500, then run it a little bit harder as the miles build.

Also be sure to PM the mods your VIN so you can become upgraded to Viper Owner, or even better, join the VCA! Best club on the planet! :yay:

EDIT: Just notcied! Ontario! Yeah! Another one! Welcome on behalf of the ONT VCA!

EDIT 2 - Watch yourself on the pavement here at this time of year! Tires dont like it! I speak from a few close calls myself! REALLY warm the tires before doing anything stupid! :D:rolleyes:

Congrats on the new Viper. Striped GTS Blue Vipers are by far the fastest ;)

I did my first oil change at 600 miles. There is a break-in procedure for the Viper's, but those that have broken them in hard have made more power. Up to you how to do that, although Herb has posted a procedure if you search the forums. In fact, I may have started a thread 1.5 years ago when I bought mine.

I've tried to take it easy but it's sooooo hard. I took it very easy for the first 40 miles but got into it a lot more since then. No redline yet but close a few times. Also I guess it's normal to get wheel hop when the tires are cold. I have about 150 miles on her now so I'll wait until 500 or 600 to change the oil.
I remember see and reading about the rolling chassis being put on a dyno to check for leaks and could have sworn it said they break the engines in. I know there is a pic somewhere on here.

Yes, CAAP does have a little rolling syno, but that is used to check for vibrations, leaks etc. It takes MUCH longer to actually break in a motor.

Yes, wheel hop is normal. Cold tires. Just try not to get too much wheel hop. Wheel SPIN is OK, but HOP is not. Thats how you break things. I know. I speak from experience! ;)

Manual says: Keep Vehicle at 4000RPM or less for the first 500 miles...page 59 of your manual gives you a sequence of break-in guidelines....conventional wisdom is to change out oil at 500 miles on most high performance cars.....

Just had a new engine put in my 06. Break in procedure from Dodge says the following.

Do not let engine idle for extended periods, vary rpms.
Do not drive car enthusiastically until all fluids are up to temp.
First 200 miles gradual run up to max of 2500 rpms.
Change oil and filter after 200 miles.
Second 200 miles gradual run up to max of 3000 rpms.
Third 200 miles gradual run up to max of 3500 rpms.
Fourth 200 miles gradual run up to max of 4500 rpms.
Fifth 200 miles gradual run up to max of 5000 rpms.

Then drive it like you stole it.

Thanks guys for all the advice and info. I think keeping it under 2500rpm for the first 200 miles is not going to happen. I have been past 4000 a few times for short bursts and probably nicked 5000 a couple of times. But most of the it has been very easy driving definitely under 3500. I remember reading about Jamie Furman taking his brand new 08 with 100 miles on it to the strip and ripping a high 10sec. Hopefully those official break in procedures are just to cover their butts. I think I am going to change the oil at 200 right before she goes to sleep for the winter.
Thanks again guys and I am definitely going to join the VCA.

Drive very carefully...don't learn the hard way like I did! Curious, how did you get your vanity plate so fast...took me 6-8 weeks in Connecticut

Thanks I will be careful. You just have to give it a little respect and don't be stupid.
I actually had this plate for a while. It was on my 96 SVT Cobra that I had for a while. Sold that and got a 06 300C SRT-8 but I had to wait for my next and better snake to use them again.
