Been thinking about wheels & tires for years. When the six-spoke OEM came out I loved them as I really don't like three-piece wheels - especially with big pimpin' lip - but I was never a fan of of shiney wheels, especially on silver cars. When I found out six-spokers where reasonably priced along with Nittos being similarly reasonably priced I decided to pull the trigger. You would think wheels and tires are the easiest of all mods: you take off the old and bolt on the new - but it never seems to work out that easy in modville. I like the six-spokers because the spokes are thin - which means you can really see the brakes. So I decided it was time to undertake another project I have been thinking about: powdercoating my calipers. Here is how the car started:

At first I was going to do the brakes orange, but I chickened out - especially when the powdercoater suggested I do the rotors as well as the calipers. I picked Storm Grey Wrinkle (you will see why later). Should hide brake dust well.

Front - I like the powdercoating on that hat of the rotor:

Rear - my Tom's 40mm rear calipers are of course ugly (even though they work aweseme) so I decided to grab a set of Tom's cover to powdercoat - again the hat part of the rotor looks great coated:

Here is where the Storm Grey Wrinkle came from - I already had engine parts done in this finish:

So here is where I wound up overall - I am NOT loving the polished wheels with the silver car - but I love the shape of the wheels and color of the brakes (I'll post about the Nitto NT05s in another thread):

Flushed the system out with new Motul RBF 600 fluid during the project. Wanted to enjoy the new brakes and wheels clean for a bit so I put my Porterfield R4S pads back in. Gawd they ****. The stockers will be going back in when I do the re-bleed. Car was down a total of 9 days for the project. Not bad for a guy who works full time (thanks Arizona Powder Coat for turning the coating so quickly).

Looks really good! Been thinking about the 6 spokes myself, but I'm probably going with the "big pimpin'" lipped I-forged.

I'd paint the wheels too...

Wheels with an even number of spokes just don't look good to me. Otherwise they look good :)

Great job, I like the intake manifold and valve covers the best.

Nice UPGRADE! I love how the wrinkle grey matches the intake and valve covers.

FINALLY! Somebody "gets" it.

It was you pictures that pushed me over the edge. I like the shiney finish better on your dark car, but I really like the shape of the wheels.

Much better than before. I don't like the fog lights being rendered useless in addition to not liking the clear lenses painted. The fog light covers are distinct to '96 - '98 and should stay that way. The only reason they stopped them in '99 was to save money. I'd keep the wheels polished versus painting them with more gray. Just my .02.

Nice look! I have exactly the same wheels in my garage waiting to go on my '97 B&W, seeing yours has helped me understand what they will look like and I am pretty keen to get them (and a brake kit) fitted asap!

Oh and I have the sneaky centre caps on them :)

The smooth tubes, intake, valve covers, PCM cover, calipers and rotors are all powdercoated in a wrinkle powder called Storm Grey Wrinkle.

Your car is the best that I've seen on six spokes. I really do not like the design of the wheel, but for some reason, your car pulls it off.
If you don't like the polished finish, matte black would look good too.

You have any close-up shots of the engine bay, mainly the intake and valve covers?

I really like that look on silver.

I agree on the wheels...they truly look best on Gen II's...

Re: Finished winter refresh toady: painted calipers/added 6-spoke wheels on GTS (PICS

Follow-up: re-bled the brakes over the weekend and see there are some issues with powdercoating rotors. The good news is the hats are fine, and the coating seems to be whole and functioning as a coating on the edge of the rotor so the edge of the rotor will not rust. The bad news is that the grey wrinkle powdercoat has burned on the edge of the rotor and turned rust colored! Looks like cad plating is the prefereble finish, then once that fails periodic high-temp paint touch ups - at least for the edge of the rotor. Like I said, at least the hats still look fine.

Great job! Don't forget to season the rotors, + bed the pads. It won't have full brake "torque" until you do.

Totally self-serving ad placement and expect this to be chopped: Gen 1/2 non-ABS brake covers in black are available again...
