We only have 1500 miles on our 08 at this point...with two oil/filter changes to date.

So far, no detectable oil "usage" between changes...noting that it was a very gentle/extended break-in during the first 1000 miles.

i have not used but maybe a 1/4 quart in 3 k miles, but you will get all kinds of oil usage replies, just keep it full and forget about it- get to know your motor on how it uses oil patterns

I just add 3 guart's after only 1597 miles. At that addition it would be 6 quart's every 3 thousand miles

steve, can you tell us about the break-in driving style to date as asked by plumcrazy...noting that whatever you report, it helps us all.

I chose slow and easy but there certainly are other theories .

Regardless of the circumstances, your oil consumption seems a little high to me...unless, of course, you were low on oil at the time of delivery.
I would keep close tabs on it, taking great care to check/chart the oil with every drive...and always checking it the same way at the same point (such as full cold before startup). Have you ever changed the oil/filter?? If not, I would do it ASAP...saving a 4oz. mid-drain sample to send to a reputable lab such as Blackstone in Ft. Wayne, IN.

If you have already changed the oil, would do so again in 500-1000 miles...and send a sample then.

are you certain it was full to begin with ? if so, thats a crazy amount of oil usage.

how hard do you drive it ?
any mods ?
no leaks ?
any smoke out the exhaust ?

any more info ?

1 quart every 1000 miles is normal for any Viper, some will use more some less. Also depends on driving style. Often a new car uses extra it's first 5k miles. I always change oil after 2000 miles on my new cars and I see that it used some oil, one or two quartz, after the fluid change (and certainly after second oil change) it stopped using oil, 1 quart per 10000 miles!

Plus, between min and max on the stick is more as 1 quart. I would not be worried if my car used what yours did. 1 quart is normal, you used double, probably through break in period or bad measuring.

3 quarts seems like alot for just 1500 miles, break in or not. when I had my engine rebuilt, and babied the first 1000 miles I had to add 1/2 quart. 500 miles per one quart usage. I assume its still under warranty, which is good.

Have you noticed any oil leaks? Look around the engine by and place a dip pan/cloth under the car.
Can those with experience list possible causes for oil usage:
rings not sealing correctly?
gaskets not sealing correctly?

1 quart / 1000 miles is way to much oil IMO. thats ~ 3 qts / oil change or ~ 30% oil used/burned / oil change

i drive an 800+ rwhp viper HARD (not tracked). and use less than a quart/oil change

I use about 1 quart every 1500 miles and I was worried so I asked Chuck the Wizard, he told me 1 quart every 1000 miles is normal and healthy

steve, whatever the direction of all of this speculation from the concerned fellow Viper owners/techs as to the fate of your original oil...no one can say for sure.

As suggested, you will need to monitor the oil regularly, consistantly, and carefully.

For the record, you have not supplied us with much info regarding the oil level at the time you took delivery...nor answered the question as to your driving style , break-in procedure, or schedule of same.

To an old timer, the obvious questions are: did you ever check the oil before the 1597 mile point?? If so, when and what did it show?? If you did not, it's OK...you're not the first!! :)

I understand you may be hesitant to admit that you "accelerated" the break-in, or imply any abuse in the process(I'm NOT saying that you did, by the way!!! )...but, in asking for help one does open oneself to a few obvious questions.

If you are really fixed on the concept that the car burns/uses oil that has not been seen, and/or you have some undisclosed reason to suspect a problem with the rings or other potentially damaged parts, visit an experienced Viper Tech...and ask him to check it out to put your mind at ease...or fix the problem.

Please take this as a constructive post...no disrespect intended.

Yes, a compression test and/or a leak down test should point to the answer.
