We are having a “Horsepower Challenge” on September 18, 2009 in Richmond, VA. The event will be part of the “Christmas in September” event at the Children’s Hospital, 2904 Brook Road, Richmond, VA. This is an annual charity event for the Children’s Miracle Network. The event typically yields more than $20,000 in money for the Children's Miracle Network. Santa Claus even makes rounds in the hospital for the children too sick to come out and see the cars. There will also be a live band.

The Viper Club of America and the Corvette Club of Richmond have challenged each other to see which club can get the most total horsepower to the event. The losing club president will present an award to the winning club president.

We've lost the "Horsepower Challenge" the last few years due to the large participation by the membership of the Corvette Club of Richmond. They normally have about 50 of their members come to the event. Even though we have generally had more horsepower per car than they do we've not been able to overcome the number of Corvettes at the event. A stock Viper with 600 H.P. is just not enough. This alone should be enough reason for the next generation of Vipers to have 700 H.P.

Be sure to bring your dyno slip if you’ve modified your Viper. Each club will use the published horsepower or a dyno slip with a 15% allowance for driveline loss to determine how much horsepower they have. The supercharged and twin turbo Vipers sure help with the horsepower totals!

We will also have two trophies exclusively for VCA members. The show will be a participant judged event this year and there will be nice trophy given to the first place judged Viper. In addition there will be a “King of the Hill” trophy for the Viper with the most horsepower. In the event of a tie we will use the time of registration as the tie-breaker. There will also be top 25 awards in two year groupings plus other awards.

Other regions are welcome.

I may have to attend, it's a bit far but for a good cause. I'd be willing to lend my 700 rwhp to the total. :D

Howard--assuming my 2010 FE is here by then I will be there. Since I don't drive the 92, the only other choice would be the Ford-(or Caddy)-don't think the Vette guys would approve.

You make more power than most vettes out there. Believe one of our viper took top HP out there last year.

How do you know how much power I make? LOL We need to gather some high HP vipers...Our community is alot smaller than the vettes...

Do you know what a Corvette is? Your Viper has to be a 92 or newer correct? 400 hp would be the least. Do you know how much HP most corvettes make? No where near there, especially since mostly older vettes show up. You make almost double of 2 of the older vettes.

To my knowledge there are not that many high HP Vipers. A lot of them are hiding out in Carolina. Every bit helps though. I'm good for 530 unless I get back to the dyno prior.

Unfortunately I will be in Phoenix that week. Otherwise it is only about a 2.5 hour drive from me.

We were very close last year and had 11 Vipers to 47 or more vettes. We'll take all we can get...I've been to the last 2 and lost both times! I want to see the VCA take the prize this year!!!

We also end up going to lunch afterward, which is always fun!

I know a vette that makes some good power ;)

How can you forget that I took King of the Hill last year with the Viper... You must not have noticed me getting the trophy because you were too busy admiring your trophy :2tu:

Actually I was admiring the raw beauty of the bumblebee and how much better it looked parked next to Vipers like yours :).

I figured it was something like that. To bad the looks don't match the power (all show and no go):) You do have a pretty car though.

I plan on going again this year, I'm shooting for best Gen 3 from the judges.

I'll see if I can attend. It's a bit far, but we have family in Richmond, so I might drop in anyway. I'll probably also bring my son. Too bad he doesn't have his own car. If he had his license, I might let him bring the Hummer.

Damn. Does that mean you're not gonna bring the GT? (It's slightly more horsepower, ya know. Every litle bit helps.)

Maybe I will get wife to bring the GT. Funny thing is the Vette guys seem to like the GT--but not so much the Vipers. But I have to be careful--I have had Vettes and currently have 2 cars with Vette motors--CTS-V and Slade

I should be able to make it this year...I would like to like to get my car dyno'd before hand, as it sounds like the Gen-4 motors are putting down around 550 to the wheels vs. the 510 that would be used based on the published 600 BHP.

It's based on crank power...so you'll get credit for the full 600hp. If you have done anything to your car, then get it dyno'd as we add 15% driveline loss...so 600hp to the wheels would equal 690hp in the challenge.

I've heard numerous people say that their Gen-IV's have come in around 550 at the wheels stock. Doing the math on that (550/.85), I get 647CHP. If that holds true for my car, I'd like to know (and add that 47 HP to the total...we're gonna need all the help we can get against the fleet of Corvettes ;)).

Unless you've got a Dyno slip they go by the HP that the car has stock. Doesn't matter what we say or think we're putting out they go by the stock HP with no proof on paper showing different. If we get more Vipers than the 13 or 14 last year we should have a decent chance. Would be nice to take it this year. 10 more Vipers than last year may just do the trick with you guys with new ones at 600.
Hoping for a nice turnout and great weather. Any NoVa guys going we can hook up in Fredericksburg at rte 3 and 95. :drive:

Yup, I get how the calculations are performed. If I don't have a dyno sheet, they're going to say my car has 600 CHP....done. But we all know that Dodge under-rates these engines to varying degrees. I've seen people with stock cars come in over 550 RWHP on the dyno, which equates to way more than 600 CHP if you use 15% for DT loss. If I have one of those "hot" engines, I'd like to have that "unknown" HP count towards our total. If I ended up with a "built on Friday" engine that comes in under 500 RWHP, I'll just quietly throw the dyno slip in the trash. :lmao:
