I had the Cats removed from my 98 GTS about a week ago and put the spark plug non-foulers on the sensors. Both sills had heat discoloration when I bough the car so I had those resprayed as well. I'm not sure but a couple of people have told me that the car has a Belanger exhaust and I thought it also had the stock cats but looking at some pictures I couldn't be sure of that either.

Anyway... I've driven the car over 100 miles since and I have to say that I love it. It really is like a different car now. The heat in and around the car is 1/3 or less than what it used to be and the sills get a little warm but never hot and I've been driving in 90+ weather. The sound is fantastic too... It has a deep pitch and rumble and there is no backfiring or popping on decel either... I did notice some fumes at one point but I was stopped at a light and sitting under an overpass so I'm not really sure if it was me or not.

My car is on a collector registration and inspection so that won't be an issue but there is no CEL so it would probably pass a standard tailpipe smogging. If you have been thinking about deleting your Cats and weren't really sure I say go for it :2tu:

That is the factory cat you had on. My sills are discolored as well since the January repaint ,so my cats got to go sooner than later;)

Ok... The shop fabbed the pipe from raw stock and welded it. 3 hours each side... Not excacly sure how long the delete pipes came out to be but it wasn't expensive for the pipe. The clamps were about $22 each. The tires are ancient and they are the next thing on my list... I'm thinking of going with the BF Goodrich G-FORCE T/A KDW tires and then I'm done for a while.

Deleting the cats is the first thing I do on every performance car I buy. Runs cooler and sounds better... and after the past 2 crappy summers we've had Im doing everything I can to warm up this damn planet again...LOL

Should be the first mod any Viper owner does, like everyone that has done it says they become different cars to drive.

No disrespect, but for the rest of y'all considering this: Autozone has 18" length of 3" pipe for like 6 bucks. that plus a sawsall + 2 clamps and you are done in less than 3 hrs per side. 6 hrs total... that's a long day.

I thought the 3 hours a side was a bit much myself especially because it was wrapped in with a lot of other work including removing and painting the sills anyway. The 6 hours also included the drilling and installing the non-foulers (NBD) and maybe some time to locate and pick up the parts plus the welding. Hopefully no test drive time:rolleyes: Overall I was pleased with the price and quality of the work.

Just wondering but would it not be better to use 2 1/2inch pipe instead of 3inch pipe for the stock size which is 2 1/4inch?

Be cafeul with the clamps you're using below. Those threaded studs may stick out far enough where they will rub/burn through the side-sill insulation and eventually your side sills. Difficult to tell from the pic if they protrude too far but something to be aware of.

The stock cats are so bad we should call them "Government Cats" since that's why they're on the car and work so badly.

I agree the Cats really do almost ruin the car. It's so nice to be able to roll up the windows when it's 95 and actually freeze yourself with the a/c. It just sounds so much better now too. The car has a real howl in the lower range and it's like a Heavy Metal Power Chord up top. It may just be the sound but the car does feel more responsive too. The interior noise is a bit louder but I like that too.

on a silver car, its even more important to do this mod. those sills will stay silver now once painted.

Don't most people go to a full 3" system after doing all of the other basic mods? If it was a lower hp car, I could see using just a 3" cat back. :eater:

The emissions testing do visual insoections for the cats - they supposedly remove a tiny amount of Nitrates(?) from the exhaust while increaseing C02 emissions because of the restriction. Adding toxic metal to our cars to be more green?

One thing is for sure, no cats equals really embarassing fumes at a stop light. I never thought I'd admit it, but cats really should be on every car. At least hi flows anyway.

This is sort of a reversal because back in 1975 or so when they first started putting Cats on, the Cats were always known for creating a rotten egg smell and starting national parks ablaze and stuff... I never thought I'd see the day when Cats would be seen as a good thing. Having owned and driven a couple of dozen Pre-75 performance and transportation type cars I can't ever remember being embarrassed by an odor unless I hadn't showered of course. :rolleyes: I love the smell of unburnt fuel in the morning anyway. Especially if it's two stroke.

One thing is for sure, no cats equals really embarassing fumes at a stop light. I never thought I'd admit it, but cats really should be on every car. At least hi flows anyway.

i dont smell it too much when at idle, might be worse for other cars around me but thats not my problem.

How much more does the exhaust spit flames without the cats? I suppose it depends on the rest of the tune of the car but say with head work and cam?

Spit flames? There shouldn't be any unburnt fuel coming through the engine. Perhaps the Roe bein the exception because of it's 2" long intake runners, but I don't smell fuel from my car at idle. I do smell exhaust while driving if the window is down a little - it reminds me that I need to seal my rear GTS cabin vents. People were complaining of smelling exhaust behind me, but I think I've finally tuned it much better. The a/f mix was from 10.5 and now into the 11s. No cats
