Greetings again...

Is the ACR upgrade substantial compared to the GTS? The same question for ABS and non-ABS models too.

Ideally, I'd like a black on black GTS with abs, but Dodge didn't help me with that.

So anyway, I'm still looking and came across an '01 GTS sapphire and a '00 black on black ACR both with about 18k miles.

Which one? The 2000 seems to be the outcast... no forged pistons or ABS but the ACR badge does carry some collector value it seems over "plain vanilla" GTS.

I delude myself that I will do upgrades later, but probably not.

My two cents which is likely worth just that or less.....

The ACR thing is overblown. 10hp more thanks to filters and smooth hoses you can do yourself. No foglights, which I think are a must. I remember some ACR guys taking the ACR shocks out as they were too stiff. I prefer the regular GTS. (and yes, I've driven both)

No Viper after and including 2000 had forged pistons, and unless you want to push more than a little boost via a supercharger....it's not an issue. How the 2000s are known as "outcasts" is beyond me. When the 2000s hit the ground the Viper racing series penalized them. I remember (I think) the fastest stock 1/4 time was with a 00 RT.

I say buy the one you like best...if it's black or sapphire...worry about what others think less and what you want more. For me, I'd prefer the non ACR sapphire.

Hello 'realityeds' Not sure on your location? The reason I say this is because ACR's do not have AC ;) If you live in a hot area, you will be very very hot inside a GTS with no AC ;)

Looking at your choices so far, I think you have to decide what you want out of the car?
Do you intend to track it?
What mods would you like to do, or none?
Do you like Harness seat belts?
Stiffer springs/ shocks on the ACR

The brakes on the early Gen 2 cars are not great, brake moderately hard and 9 times out of 10 the front wheels will lock up with standard brakes. You can get the 40mm rear caliper upgrade which is a Big improvement, or go the whole way and get a Big brake kit!

All this adds $ to your purchase :( If you find a car with the mods already done, chances are it will be cheaper to buy that car than paying for the mods to be done yourself ;)

I've had both and my 01 stopped in a shorter distance then my 00 with upgraded rear brakes. Not to mention my 00 flat spotted my tires with I had to panic stop going about 80mph.

Under normal driving and braking there was no difference.

Probably 95%+ of ACR's had the air conditioner and radio added back. Some ACR's have foglights-as you can see in my avitar, mine does. The ACR springs and shocks are brutal except at race speeds on a relatively smooth road. They are great at high speed, but are almost dangerous on rough road. The Dynamic ACR shocks tend to leak at around 10,000 miles, but are rebuildable. Some of the ACR owners are just putting on the stock Viper springs and shocks. Unless you just want an ACR a regular GTS will more than fill the bill. For street driving ABS is nice to have. It would be more problematic to put ABS on a non ABS car than to put forged internals in a 2000 and later Viper. Unless you are going to drive at the edge and with mega supercharge a non forged Viper engine will do nicely. You can always upgrade things later. Good luck.

I say go with the ABS car. For me it was a must. Take a look at the viper buyers guide book as well. That might help you in your decision.

If you don't care about the forged motor... get the ABS. No reason to buy a 2000 unless it is the color you really want.

Either way, you will be in a GTS - so can you really go wrong?

The Sapp/Silver color always gets commented on, even by Viper owners. It looks even better in person and the color changes depending on the lighting/time of day. I held out for the ABS when I went shopping. HATE it on a sport bike, but in a car it's great. The Viper likes to swap ends with a panic stop and the ABS just gives you a little more chance of controlling it when things get nasty.

Your choice should be based on how you're going to use the car. If primarily for the street, I'd go with the GTS. Even with it better for normal driving, it can still hold its own on the track.

dave6666 hit it squarely on the head. I don;t think we'll live long enough to see these cars take off in value like hemi 'cudas and such...so buy what you like and enjoy.

If you think ABS is important to you get a 2001 or later. When I bought my steel/striped GTS new in 2000, it made no difference to me that ABS was coming...I wanted what I bought. Like Bird325 said about sapphire, the steel grey also shifts hue and gets lots of compliments.

But again...buy what trips your trigger. When I went shopping to replace a 94 RT that I sold 10 years ago to buy my GTS, I had several people who's opinion I respect suggest I find a 1997 or newer. But...I wanted a 1996 or earlier as I preferred the earlier RT over the later. Nothing wrong with a later RT...just a preference of mine.

Good luck in the hunt...it's half the fun.

Thanks for all the responses; ya, I've got a car already that has been a money pit, I'm not counting on an investment at all, just nice to know it MAY be one of those Cuda types in a billion years.

I can tell my wife it's for the children...

Anywho, I know being a noob the same questions are asked over and over. Thanks for the patience and info. :2tu:

If you're going to buy collectible cars buy them in 1:64 scale from the Hot Wheels display. Buying a Viper as an investment is dumb.

I'm not sure where investment or collectable came from? Everyone knows "Anything with teats or tires is a bad investment."

Unless you live in the Seattle area you'll rarely see another Sapp/Silver....even at a Viper meet.

Bird325 got my drift....

You won't need powdercoated wheels or any visual mods to stand out.

It's a GREAT color combination that sticks out, but doesn't cause the local PoPo to notice you coming over a hill during a moment of indescretion.

I was SHOCKED to catch a Sapphire/Silver vert at the Viper roundup this last spring in Austin, but it was really nice and clean, so it just added to the allure. Haven't seen another one up here in N. Texas, but I'm sure there's at least one hiding out in someone's climate controlled garage.

In making that decision on what year/color/model to buy, it's all about the one that takes your breath away. I've been out in my garage three times already tonight just looking ... that feeling is what makes owning a Snake so special.:D

I'll throw in my two cents since I have a 2000 ACR. BBS wheels at $3,000 a piece, Koni 2812 Racing Dampers $1,200 a piece, ACR only oil filter adapter with full oil pressure , Factory installed five point racing harness's, smooth tubes and K&N filters. Overrated? If you want the ultimate factory prepared Gen II it's an ACR, for me it was an ACR or nothing. Same with Gen III, performance is my only criteria, period. In fact, if I had the cash, I would have bought an ACR-X over the ACR. Hands down bargain of the century.

Just some info for you, 2000 ACR's built through mid year had Koni shocks not the Dynamic variety. To say that the highest performance option for a vehicle will not yield higher dollars down the road is silly. The current Viper demographic is changing but is still primarily older gentlemen who like A/C and some semblance of comfort. Personally, my feeling is that the the non comfort package Gen II ACR's which are regarded as the bastard cars by the old guys will be the most prized cars down the road.

Hey in the end it's just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions. Get the car you like and drive it...............
