Had a sniff at my for sale 06 coupe. I want some opinions on my terms. He wants to make a 2,000 deposit to hold the car plus another 2,500 for me to give to his transporter/inspector when they come. My response was deal with your transporter directly and for a 2K deposit nobody is driving the car in a test drive but me. I went on to say if you want the transporter/inspector to drive the car that would require a cashiers check in the full amount of the sale price up front. If they wreck it it is yours, if they give a thumbs down and no damage to car the cashiers check is returned. If a thumbs up they load it.

What would you folks do for a test drive. This is a heavily modded S/C car with 700HP on the wheels. I don't want to risk a test drive with someone who always wanted to drive one of these with a 2K deposit.

YOu picking up another toy?

I agree with not letting anyone test drive it without the full amount or have them meet you in an open empty parking lot. Besides if he can put up 2k for a test drive then he should have no problem with cutting a check for the entire amount and providing that when they arrive for a test drive.

No other toys for a while. Too many now. Thats the problem and why selling. I don't need to sell, but the viper just sits. I hate garage queen cars.

Had a similar situation come up with a buddy selling a big block Mustang. The guy showed up with two of his buddies to test drive the car before putting it on the hauler, while one was test driving the other two jumped him and beat the **** out of him. They left in the hauler and apparently met up with the Stang somewhere and none have been seen again.

I see your in AL. Whats up down there? I had a 2006 250HP Yamaha Outboard stollen of my boat in AL last year. One reason I left and never to go back. But ya thanks, that is always a possibility as you outline the scenario on your freinds auto sale. Thanks.

I would say no test drives period. If he wants to know the mechanical condition of the car, have him pick out a local shop which you take it to for inspection and he pays for it (unless they find something significantly wrong with the car). Then, if he wants to transport it, collect in full before they pick it up, and have him handle all the transportation.

I would walk away if I was looking at a modded car and I couldn't test drive it. $2k down is more than enough to test drive it.

This makes no sense. Why would you feel it more necessary to drive a modded car vs. a stock car? Very few dealers will let you drive a car like this and the ones that have most likely have seen the consequences. And how is $2k supposed to protect Greg if the guy wrecks the car??? That is the problem...if the guy wrecks it, then Greg spends thousands with a lawyer to try and get the money back that his car was worth. Greg, you are a smart guy, you know the right thing to do here.

when I become a potential buyer I would not expect the seller to let me drive it. I would expect a ride and an inspection at my cost with the owner driving to the inspection point. too much money to fix a viper or any car in the same class if I the driver don't know what to expect behind the wheel.

It's a scam. See my new post with link to same scammer working NSX board:

I agree, it sounds like the makings of a scam.

Ha ! I just read the post you linked to the NSX forum. I see why you were so certain. Exact same scenario, same check amounts and everything.

I imagine that it is just like fishing to these guys. Keep throwing the same lure out there until they get a bite. If that doesn't work, occasionally change lures, or change your fishing spot, looking for some fat juicy suckers ! Hopefully, no one here gets hooked !

What gets me is that they are E-MAILing you, but somehow they don't think you are connected to the internet and can do a google search on them.

I don't think that fisherman expect to catch the smartest fish, LOL.

Unfortunately, intelligence isn't necessarily the saving grace for humans. You can be smartl but not necessarily street smart, so, they are looking for someone that is either gullible, or just hasn't learned about the internet faciltated scam artists.

Can someone explain how the scam works? Is the transporter going to steal your car?:dunno:
Looks like 97snk confirmed what I guessed on the other thread: "I am assuming once they go to pay the agreed to deposit and test drive fee that they use the old "send you a forged cashiers check that is for more than the true amount" then ask you to refund the difference. You refund the difference in real money THEN your bank informs you the cashiers check is a forgery. Or perhaps they have a scam based on getting your account wire information but probably the former."

Yes, please explain. The only thing I could think is they would then ask for an account number to transfer the money to. But surely NO one would ever fall for that.

A simple question that i see is:
What can a middle-man(the transporter) relay to the buyer about the testdrive that he cant relay as simply being a passanger with you taking him for a thorough drive to show him all is well.
If anything he would get more info with you driving since you can show him the redline and such as where anyonelse would be expected to baby it on a testdrive.

In the other thread 97snk posted the final e-mail from a similar scammer related to an intake manifold he has for sale:

http://forums.viperclub.org/general...-scam-alert-adam-torenden-not-real-buyer.html

Below is the message: (they send you a fake check for more than the purchase price & ask you to wire the difference back to them)

Thanks for the prompt response. I'm okay with the asking price and what is the condition of the item and I want you to consider the item sold to me because am ready to issue out a Certified Check without no delay and you don't have to bother your self about the shipment because i have a private shipping company that will be coming available over for the pickup of the item,So kindly get back to me with the

Name:
Address:
City/State
Zipcode
Phone Number

The payment will enclose the shipping fees which after you receive the payment you are to deduct your sale price and wire the rest of the fund via Western Union Money Transfer to the shipping company information that will be coming available over for the pickup of the item,Hope to read from you soon.
Best Regards

First sign of trouble on anything with regards to this type of sale is if everything is handled over e-mail with no real personal discussion. What kind of buyer does not personally get involved on the discussions and process. I mean, any used collector type of cars I have ever bought across North America over the years, I have:

1. Flew out to look at the car as a first step. If I test drove it? Great! If the owner only test drove it with me in the car? Fine as well because you get the same feedback anyway. If I felt concerned on some points and the owner allowed for a mechanic to look at it, at my cost? Great! If not, I rely on my own powers of deduction so no biggie.
2. Put the owner in direct contact with my credit union so that both parties are protected during the transaction. Ends up with both party's financial institutions talking directly and the exchange of money is between the each other's banks.
3. Once check, cashier's check, etc. has cleared, and clear title has been FED-EX to me. I have transport come and pick the car up or I fly out and drive it home. It is my car at that point and transport is all my own handling. With my own insurance taken care of prior.

I have never understood the rush, rush, rush aspect of used car sale transactions. If you follow the steps above, you get a pretty good understanding of the indivudal you are dealing with and if there are any issues on the surface. If you have the financial institutions of both parties involved, there is no risks of not being paid. Once you have bought the car, you insure it immediately so if the old owner destroys it, at least insurance will cover what you just paid for. You arrange your own shipping for your own piece of mind and the transport will have insurance during the move, if you choose the right one.

I just explain and we agree on the process right up front with I am dealing with. There is no reason they would not do this as it is risk free for all involved. If they want some crazy scheme, then I walk away right up front. I have never had to lay out a deposit for any of my cars upfront. Most times the owners just want it to go to a good home so the timing is not the issue.

As far as the test drive mandate, that is just BS. That is a kiddy thing that unknowledgable people feel they need to do to understand a vehicle that they know nothing about. I hate driving other people's cars, even dealer test drives. I feel uncomfortable. Sometimes people need to man up for their decisions. Used cars without a warranty are always a risk anyway.

You did the right thing. If someone did not come out to look at my car in person and let me qualify them as a buyer first, I would not give them the time of day. That is just common sense, to me anyway.

Like I said in the other thread: "speak English or die." First thing to look for is grammar mistakes. It is like a warning siren. Then you just say "hell no" when a "certified check" shows up in an amount larger than that for the part or car. Easy stuff.

But of course, all the problems of Africa are blamed on colonialism! And you guys thought I was a radical left-winger!

Whether that car was stock or heavily modified, I wouldn't let someone test drive my car. I didn't expect to test drive it before I purchased it. All I asked was for the previous owner to take me for a ride in it so I could assure everything was running good, all the gears worked, etc.

It's just way to easy for someone that's not familiar with these cars to get in a lot of trouble.
