If your like me and like to mod your car, but keep the factory look this mod may be for you. I took my factory shifter and shortened it by 2". This is the same distance as the aftermarket ones but retains the stock look. All work is done on a lathe so the quality of the finished part is top notch. You would need to ship me your factory shifter. I would have it back in the mail to you the following day. I will do this mod for $25 and that would include shipping your factory shifter back to you. You can PM me if you have any questions.

I guess the short shifter is more racecar like, but I honestly like the tall shifter. Just seems to fit with the car being an indestructible beast. Also reminds me the car was made with truck parts ;). Have had people come up to me and tell me to put a short shifter in though...

The shorter shifter makes it to where you can rest your hand on the center console while shifting. It makes the car much more pleasent to drive, no matter what the driving situation is. I could give you a money back guarantee, but if you wernt happy then id have to weld the piece back on i cut off:lmao::lmao:

How does that look any different than a quality aftermarket shifter? Its all under the boot anyway, and you don't even have a stock shift knob.

That is the whole point. It is not supposed to look different than a stock shifter. Its a modified stock shifter for the guys who want a short shifter, but retain the stock look/hardware. And YES that is a stock shift knob. I guess you dont own a viper, otherwise you would know its stock, but shorter.

Good idea. Maybe you can do an exchange program to keep the shipping costs low. Dave has a nice 1" and 2" drop shifter Engine &Transmission . You may want to try and team up with him. He's always looking for a good machinist.

Hey Dave...When ever my buddies start talking about size...I just say its little. It ends the whole mine is bigger than yours. The ladies know the real truth and they never complain:D

Id be all for some type of exchange program. The only problem with that is the quality of each persons shifter. You know wear and tear factor. I actually have another shifter i bought off ebay to do this test with. I was nt gonna cut my original one before i knew it would work fine.

What's holding the boot up? I don't see a groove cut for a retainer of any sort.
The boot holds itself up. It does not need anything as its in its relaxed position where it is.

To keep shipping costs to a mininum just use a padded envelope. They are strong, light, and you can ship first class. Shipping to me I bet would be $1-2.

You apparently didn't read what I posted. What I said was how does that look any different than a quality aftermarket shifter? You could put a B&M, SVS, etc in a Viper and not look any different from stock (besides being shorter). The knob is the only thing visible.

I assure you I own a Viper, and that my stock shift knob looks absolutely nothing like yours. I have a 97 GTS, they must have different knobs than what you have.

Cutting down the stock shift knob is a great idea if you want a shorter throw but don't want to spend 100 bucks on an aftermarket. It is best done in a lathe though, I wouldn't recommend cutting it with a hacksaw or anything.

I believe the knob posted above is from 1999 and newer vipers, the one you have on your 97 was standard only from 92-98.

Ok i was unaware that the knobs were different in earlier years. From what i remember they all looked the same. I have a lathe that i used for the whole process. An aftermarket shifter is just that an aftermarket one. Some like aftermarket some dont. I prefer the factory look so i have the best of both worlds, not to mention the price break. Just trying to help out fellow viper owners enjoy their car a bit more.

Thought I would bring up an old post incase some of you guys want your stock shifter shortened. Had a couple members here do this mod and they were very happy with it.

I didn't look at the dates when I started reading this bumped thread. Wasn't until someone mentioned contacting DBB Dave that I realized that I was in 2008.

I really like the feel of my B&M shifter mechanism; but, this mod could be a reasonable compromise for those that want a simpler mod to improve their shifting experience.

Yeah same pricing. Just doing it to help out fellow members with an inexpensive mod compared to some of the other options out there.
