My 2000 ACR is in storage right now and I went to fire her up awhile ago and just heard the rapid ticking sound. Doors, lights, radio all work so I don't think it is the battery (though it is very old and is going to be replaced). If it is not the battery then it would be the starter or alternator correct? How do I know for certain before I order the part? If it is the starter which I suspect, how much do they run?

99.99% probability - bad battery :) The battery can have enough voltage and current to run the small things, but the starter needs a bazillion amps to turn it, so a battery on it's way out is going to do exactly what you described.

Just to eliminate the 0.01% probability that it's the starter, you could always attempt to jump start the car. Not sure if you have one of those portable jump-starters (highly recommended) or a set of cables, but if the car starts when being jumped, you'll know for sure it's the battery.

Before you start, you might want to read ViperTony's post in the "Illustrated Upgrades" section...pics, tools, tips.

Be sure to check the connectors !!

If by some chance it is the starter I have a perfect one here that I bought thinking mine was bad. It was a bad battery and then a bad NEW battery. In the meantime I bought this for $125 used. I believe the gen 2 and 3 are the same. If they are and you need it I'll sell it cheap. Just let me know.
