So I decided to change my oil for the first time and I have run into a small problem and could use some help. how do I get the oil filter out? Do I need to remove something to make the room or is there a special trick to getting it out.

Thanks
Jeff

On my car, you have to fish it around and get it out through the suspension. Watch out for oil coming out of the filter, its not a clean process. Its easier if you have the RH wheel suspended in air vs. being on the ground.

Viper is a 2000...sounds like a blown 999 Recall with the triangular plate behind the lower frame cross-member instead of in front...thus trapping the filter. Jeff knows cars, trying a work-around now.

Sounds like a trip to Tator's is in the near future!!

You are in Pittsburgh, PA? I would drive it to the nearest Dodge dealer and have them do the oil change. When they have issues, point out the botched 998 recall and have a DM authorize them to correct it.

I just finished about a half hour ago and thought I would share how I was able to get the filter out. My car is a 2000 gts with a botched 999 recall which prevented me from just pulling the oil filter out between the frame of the car, so what I did thanks to Steve taking the time with me to trouble shoot this and also inform me off the recall. I was able to pull the filter out through the top of the car. All that anyone needs to do this is unplug a sensor and move some lines out of the way. One thing I did to make sure there was no oil spilling any where was I drained it before this was attempted and I also stuck my finger in the hole of the filter which also helped me keep it up right. This took me about 2 minutes to do and is a very easy way to getting the oil filter out and also installing the new one. Thanks to everyone and Steve for all of the help.

Thanks
Jeff

While on the phone with steve he informed me that what most places do is just drain the old oil put new oil in and leave the old filter, which I think may have happened with my car. Speaking of this I was looking at pictures of the mopar filters with the viper logo on them mine was black and it had mopar, dodge, chrysler, and jeep writen on it. I wonder if that is the older mopar filter? No this was my first time doing the oil change, In the past I have taken it to what I thought was a trusted garage.

Good going, Jeff...always nice to hear a new trick from another owner as I have not faced this in person. I suppose that the folks who did the previous oil changes COULD have done something with the filter...or not.

The black filter is the old standard run of the mill filter that was used on many Chrysler products including the Viper.

Can this filter still be purchased and if not how long ago was it off the market? The reason I ask is because I would like to know if the garage I took it to for the oil changes is trust worthy. Good thing any repairs done on the car where done by me.
